Personal Statement & Short Response

Personal Statement Question #1
At age six, I loved the summer afternoons when my dad played catch with me. I
always asked him to throw the ball to the side so I could dive and slide across the
sweet-smelling grass. At nine, I joined a team and soon realized that I was one of
the better players, which was a good feeling. I also began reading the sports
section to keep up with the MLB. I soon knew all my favorite players’ stats,
especially Derek Jeter, who played shortstop just like I did. I made the All-Star team
for two years, tying for third in the state that second year. I made many friends,
who nicknamed me “Sunshine” because of my long blond hair.

Over the next several years, I played in a competitive league that had many ex-pro
players serving as coaches. About this time, I started collecting baseball cards and
soon was heading down to Smith’s Ballpark to get my cards signed by prospects
or rehabbing pro players. This became a passion of mine since it was so much fun
interacting with the players who I followed.

I had a lot of confidence going into my first season and I hoped I would land a spot
on varsity. However, I lost out to a junior so I played on the freshman/sophomore
team instead. I expected to play every game; however, I was competing for the
same position as the coach’s kid, who was bigger than I was, but, in my estimation,
not as strong a player. The bottom line is while I was strong in practice, I barely got
off the bench during games. This was a real confidence crusher.

In the subsequent seasons, I kept working hard in practice and expecting my

efforts to translate into more playing time. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen,
maybe because I was one of the smallest players on the team (my growth waited
until now). Throughout the summer before my senior year, I debated the pros and
cons of staying on the team. I needed more time to concentrate on my schoolwork
but was afraid that if I stopped playing, I would stop loving baseball. Finally, I made
the decision to focus on my studies and let baseball go.

However, I soon realized that just because I wasn’t on a team, didn’t mean I
couldn’t still follow all the players and continue expanding my evergrowing baseball
card collection. My baseball life may have shifted but is definitely not over.

I have learned a few lessons along the way. Mainly, I now see that just because an
experience is imperfect doesn’t mean there haven’t been perfect moments. Also,
that obstacles help develop mental toughness and resilience, which builds self-
respect. Moreover, making an active choice to make a change opens the world up
to new possibilities.

Besides, baseball will always be a part of me. After all, deep down, I’m still that little
kid who loves sliding through the grass to catch a ball.
Short Response I was raised in an open-minded liberal family in a place where the majority of people
are Mormon and conservative. Religion was not a part of my life by any means, and
my parents have allowed me to discover what I wanted to believe. My parents also
taught me how to coexist with people who have drastically different views and to
find common ground with them. This has been a crucial skill to hone growing up in
a place where I have beliefs not shared by the majority.

I have been lucky to develop a close circle of friends who share my more liberal
beliefs. We discuss the necessity for equal opportunity, more open immigration
policies and the importance of voting. We are very concerned about the number of
mass shootings and gun violence in general and recognize this is a complex
problem that concerns the entire nation and requires real conversation and
cooperation.

Additional information about yourself or your circumstances

Additional Information I have two areas of my transcript that I want to explain.

I have an Incomplete for the internship class I took my junior year. I wasn’t able to
complete my hours during the school year because of my time commitment to the
high school baseball team. Therefore, I completed the hours over the summer
before my senior year. I still need to make a video to satisfy the class requirement. I
am completing that at this time, which will result in my Incomplete being changed to
an A.

I also have a C- on my transcript in AP US History. I must admit I lost motivation in

the class during the final quarter and was not prompt with my homework. I
recognize now that was extremely shortsighted of me and I am disappointed in
myself. I am now back on track with all of my classes and intend to remain that
way.
