OLYMPUS DELTA

MINING MODES

When using the Olympus Innov-X DELTA portable XRF analyser for analysis on ore samples, there are three possible
modes for analysis: Soil, Mining or Mining Plus (Two Beam Mining)

In the various modes there are various beams that are selectable. These beams have different current, voltage and
filter configurations on the X-Ray tube. As a result the beams have been optimized for the analysis of various
elements.

Soil mode is optimized for concentrations in the ppm range while Mining and Mining Plus are optimized for % range
concentrations.

Below is a screen shot of the typical elements measured in Soil mode. (These elements may differ according to
various applications)

In Soil mode, there are three different beam settings. On each beam there are Primary elements and Secondary
elements. It is always better to try to use the beam that has the element of interest as a primary element. If you
measure a sample in beam 1 and beam 2 the result of the element listed as a primary element will overwrite the
result of a secondary element.

Example: if you measure Copper on beam 1 and beam 2, on beam 1 you may get a result of 700ppm while on beam
2 you may get 300ppm. The result of analysis on beam 2 would be the correct value to read. If this result was not
correct according to the certified result, a factor should be calculated and inserted into the User factor field. In this
example (analysis of copper) there would be no need to measure the sample in both beams.

You should only use beams 1 and 2 if you are interested in analysis of primary elements listed under both beam
options.
Example: If you were interested in analysis of Silver as well as Copper, you should use beam1 (for Ag) and beam 2
(for Cu).

Beam 3 should be used for the analysis of the light elements.

Beam 1 is the correct option for analysis of: U, Sr, Zr, Th, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sn and Sb
Beam 2 for: Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Hg, As, Se, Pb, Bi and Rb and
Beam 3 for: P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Cr and Mn

In Mining mode, there is only one beam setting.

Beam 1 is for analysis of: Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn, Hf, Ta, W, As, Pb, Bi, Zr, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sn, Sb and LE

The LE is representative of the light elements that we are unable to analyse in this mode.

Below is a screen shot of the typical elements measured in Mining Plus (2Beam Mining) mode. (These elements
may differ according to various applications)

In Mining Plus (2 Beam Mining) mode, there are two different beam settings. On each beam there are Primary
elements and Secondary elements. It is always better to try to use the beam that has the element of interest as a
primary element. If you measure a sample in beam 1 and beam 2 the result of the element listed as a primary
element will overwrite the result of a secondary element.

Example: if you measure Titanium or Manganese on beam 1 and beam 2, on beam 1 you may get a different result to
the measurement on beam 2. This is because the tube conditions on beam 1 have been optimized for the heavier
elements while the tube condition on beam 2 is optimized for the light elements.

If this result was not correct according to the certified result, a factor should be calculated and inserted into the User
factor field.

You should use both beams if there are light elements present in your samples.
Beam 1 is for analysis of: Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co,NI, Cu, Zn, Hf, Ta, W, As, Pb, Bi, Zr, Mo, Ag, Cd, Sn and Sb
Beam 2 for: Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti and Mn
