A dramatized documentary entitled ‘Ang buhay ng isang bayani’ that was made by
Ateneo de Manila was one of the programs that provide factual records of Jose Rizal’s life. This
Documentary Film clearly and deliberately visualizes not just Rizal as a freedom fighter but also
as a Son, a Friend and a Lover. This documentary made me realize a lot of things about Rizal’s
life and his significance in our Life as a Filipino. Conversely, we read about Austin Coates book.
‘Philippines Nationalist and Martyr’ is the biographical book about Jose Rizal’s life and
nationalism. This book was well-known and it served as the second biographical account of
Rizal’s career. In this book, Coates clearly explicate that our National Hero, Rizal was the “very
first exponent” of nationalism in Asia.

My reaction to the book is that it is undeniably well written by Coates and I really do
respect and admire how he used different kind of references to deepen, broaden and strengthen
his claim. Coates really did grasp and his book undoubtedly provides a lot of information
regarding Rizal that contributes to our knowledge about our National Hero. On the other hand, I
loved the documentary film that I’ve watched. The film was emphatically conceptualized. I
really commend this documentary because besides from the fact that I was educated well, this
film gives me a lot of emotions. As I watched the documentary, it felt as if I were part of it and I
feel the pain and happiness of our National Hero. Honestly, in my 19 years of existence, this is
the first time that I was well educated about our National Hero, Rizal. I was really amazed to
Rizal as the epitome of a true hero. The documentary made me love our country much deeper.
Ateneo de Manila’s Film and Coates’ book have rapport and this film and book both leads to
Rizal’s life and his significance in Philippines and its citizens. I couldn’t agree more about Jose
Rizal as the greatest genius ever produced by our race; he was the greatest product of the
Philippines.

In conclusion, I would strongly recommend Coates’ book and Ateneo de Manila’s Film
not just only to my fellow countrymen but also to people around the world for them to see that
We, Filipinos, are intelligent, strong and resilient. Although, I have a huge admiration to Andres
Bonifacio than to Rizal, I can say that Rizal really deserves, worthy and eligible to be called as
the Philippines’ National Hero.
