Discussion

The 85th percentile speed on the road is 80 kph, with mean speed of 67.21 kph. The data
obtained shows that 85% road users perceived that driving at or below 80 kph to be safe
under good weather and visibility condition. The ideal speed limit that can be enforced on the
road is 80 kph. However, observer speeds may be when in rainy conditions.

The 50th percentile speed represents the average speed of the traffic stream. In this test, the
average speed obtained is 67 kph while by using mean speed formula; more precise speed is
at 67.21 kph. Since there are two lanes for each side of the road, the left lane users may travel
at around 67 kph while the right lane users may travel at a speed higher than 67 kph.

The highest speed increment on the road is between 23.31 kph to 40.5 kph which is at 17.19
kph increment or approximately at 10 mph.

Figure Percentage of vehicle type using the road

According to the figure above, the highest percentage of the vehicle type is passenger car
with 40% users and the least is bus with a percentage of 4% while the second highest is
motorcycle with 30%. It is also observed that most of the motorcycles and buses used the left
lane which is the slower lane while the distribution of lane usage by passenger cars is
balanced between the left and the right lane. Overall, left lane is used by more vehicle types
compared to the right lane which explains the average speed of the traffic stream of 67.21
kph whereas the speed limit of the road is 80 kph.
Conclusion

From the test that has been conducted, it is concluded that the road along Samarahan to Desa
Ilmu in the direction from Kuching to Samarahan during sunny condition at 2.40 pm till 3.10
pm, the mean speed of traffic stream is 67.21 kph and the safe speed limit of the road is at 80
kph.

Recommendation and precaution

1. Students should wear vest so that the road users can identify the existence of students
near the road
2. Spot speed study should be conducted during sunny weather condition as road users
may slow down the vehicle during rainy condition which will affect the result of the
study.
3. Spot speed study should be conducted at a straight road far away from junctions
where road users can drive at full speed.
4. Avoid doing the study too close to the road is it increases the probability of accidents.
