INTRODUCTION

The concept of emotional intelligence has been linked to the concept of social
intelligence that was thrown by Thorndike in the 1920s. (Goleman, 1996) This
concept was introduced by Salovey and Mayer in 1990, and since then the
construct of emotional intelligence has received special attention in the academic
field. Gardner (1993) then describes emotional intelligence with the construct of
intrapersonal intelligence and interpersonal in its "Multiple Intelligence"
framework. When this concept was popularized by Goleman (1996) with the fact
that emotional intelligence is more important than cognitive intelligence (IQ) in
his "Emotional Intelligence", emotional intelligence becomes a popular concept in
the general public.

Goleman's emotional intelligence model

In this study we use the definitions given by Goleman (1998, p 317)

'.... emotional intelligence is the ability to control and manage self and others
from the aspects of emotion, emotion and behavior. it is also an action and
ingenuity to modify a behavior that is appropriate to the time and circumstances "

There are five dimensions in constructing emotional intelligence, namely self-

awareness, emotional management, self-motivation, empathy and social skills.

Definition of other emotional intelligence

According to Mayer and Salovey (1997), emotional intelligence defines as the

ability to control the ability to control the emotions of others and others, to
distinguish between emotions and to use the understanding to monitor their
thoughts and actions.
Gardner (1993) expresses emotional intelligence in the combination of
intraoersonal and interpersonal intelligence in various intelligence theories. The
intrapersonal intelligence refers to the high self-awareness and acting according
to the consciousness. This intelligence enables one to understand himself
properly and strives to deal with his desires, fears, emotions and motives
accordingly.
Cooper and Sawaf (1997) define emotional intelligence as the ability to detect,
understand, and apply effectively the sharpness and emotion of power as a
source of human motivation, information, relationships and influence.
Duklewicz and Higgs (1990) define emotional intelligence as intelligence about
consciousness and take care of feelings and emotions of self, sensitive and
influencing others, motivating and balancing motivation and monitoring self to
achieve intuitive and ethical behavior.
