Bordeaux students and chaperones arrive in Castlegar.
Bordeaux visit 2019!
Canadian Parents for French, Nelson Chapter and
the LV Rogers French Immersion program welcome 15
grade nine students and their two chaperones from Bor-
deaux, France. The group is on a cultural experience trip
to increase their awareness about Canada and strengthen
their English speaking skills. The students billet with
local Canadian Parents for French families attending LV
Roger’s French Immersion program, Trafalgar School or
école des Sentiers-alpins, francophone school. The host
families share their homes and practice their own French
language speaking skills.
For Bordeaux teacher, Séverine Carriere, this is her
fourth time to Nelson with a group of students. “We are
so pleased to be able to share this insight into Canadian
culture and Nelson in particular, with our students,” said
Carriere. The second chaperone, Johan Hubau Honoré,
was in Nelson in 2014 as a student himself on this same
cultural trip with his classmates. Hubau Honoré said, “I
could not wait to come back with the next cohort of stu-
dents to show them this experience and opportunity.”
The Bordeaux-Nelson connection began in October
2010 when a group of 16 Bordeaux students from Ste
Clotilde/Assomption School spent two weeks attending
Trafalgar School. “I am so delighted this cultural trip con-
tinues. Lifelong friendships have formed which is evident
with Johan returning as a chaperone!” said Trish Dehnel,
volunteer Bordeaux visit coordinator with Nelson Chap-
ter Canadian Parents for French. Since that 2010 experi-
ence, which began through connections Dehnel’s family
made in France, the relationship between the Nelson and
Bordeaux schools has grown. Exchanges with Nelson stu-
dents have since happened in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
In April 2016 and again this year, it is a visit, as only the
Bordeaux students travel. School District 8 administra-
tion/transportation staff and French Immersion teachers
are so supportive of this program and ensure a positive
cultural learning experience for the visitors.
The students visited the Nelson area until April 18
and were to spend some days at various schools as well
as exploring the area including Nelson City Hall and
Fire Hall, Touchstones, First Nations circle, Langham in
Kaslo and Ainsworth Hot Springs. The students and host
families were to attend AFKO’s (Association des Franco-
phones des Kootenays Ouest) French Canadian cabane à
sucre celebration at the Salmo Ski Hill on Sunday.

Making it simple to be protected
against measles
Following outbreaks of measles around the globe, the
Government of British Columbia launched a Measles
Immunization Catch-Up Program to ensure children in
BC are protected from measles. There are currently no
active confirmed cases of measles in Interior Health.
As part of this provincial program, Interior Health is
offering additional opportunities for children in the Inte-
rior to get caught up with the Measles, Mumps and Rubella
(MMR) vaccine. Two doses of the MMR vaccine offers the
best protection against measles. Interior Health’s catch-up
program includes offering vaccine through school-based
immunization clinics, drop-in clinics at public health cen-
tres and through community pharmacists. The goal of this
program is to ensure that getting children protected against
measles is simple and convenient for parents across the
region.
How Can I Get My Child Vaccinated? The best way
to start is to check your child’s immunization records to
ensure they are up to date. If your child has not had any or
only one measles vaccine, there are three ways to get your
child vaccinated against measles as part of the catch-up
program.
School-Based Immunization Clinics: Clinics in schools
offer parents a convenient and accessible way to have their
child caught up with immunizations.
In the coming weeks, Interior Health will be offering
MRR immunization clinics in approximately 400 schools
across the region for students in grades 1-12. One dose of
MMR vaccine will be offered at these clinics to students
who require a first or second dose. School clinics are
expected to run from early May to June.
A letter was sent to parents earlier this month providing
information about the Measles Immunization Catch-Up
Program. Consent packages will be distributed to parents/
guardians of students in grades 1-12 in the coming weeks.
Community Drop-In Clinics: Immunizations are also
available at all community public health centres across the
region for children in kindergarten to grade 12 who do not
have two documented doses of MMR. Normally, appoint-
ments are required. However, as part of the measles catch-
up program, clinics have been staffed to accommodate
drop-ins.

Immunizations are available during business hours, Mon-
day to Friday. For more information about the public
health centre in your community and its hours of opera-
tions please visit www.immunizebc.ca/finder
Community Pharmacists: Local pharmacies across
Interior Health also offer MMR vaccines. Call ahead to
ensure vaccine is available.

Honouree Cheryl Maglio-Foote. with dementia? If
you are living with
dementia or know someone else who is, you can show your
support for them by registering for the IG Wealth Manage-
ment Walk for Alzheimer’s. The fundraiser in support of the
Alzheimer Society of BC takes place at the Nelson Rotary
Lakeside Park at 11 am on Sunday, May 5.
The event provides an opportunity to remember or hon-
our people in our lives who have been touched by dementia,
while fundraising to support those living with the disease
today. Each of the 21 events across BC is dedicated to an
honouree – an individual or group affected by dementia, or
who has valuably contributed to the lives of people living
with the disease. This year the Nelson Walk honours Cheryl
Maglio-Foote.
Cheryl filled her days with music, art, theatre, dining with
friends and spending time with her three daughters Ashley,
Alyssa and Erica and later, three grandsons Ethan, Beau and
Riley. When Cheryl started to pull back from her favourite
things and isolate herself socially, her family knew something
was wrong: her dementia was already rapidly progressing.
“We were all crushed,” Ashley says. “I had just had a baby
and my sister was pregnant. We were crushed that she was
never going to get to enjoy her grandchildren. She would
have been the best grandmother.” Added to their sadness was
the stress of sudden financial and medical decision-making,
beginning with establishing power of attorney processes that

Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process
and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria
are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible
for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

support network, Ashley says, Alzheimer Society of BC sup-
port groups are a valuable resource for other families who
are carrying the weight of caregiving on their own. Funds

help enable Alzheimer Society of BC support and education
in Nelson and help facilitate research into the causes of and
the cure for the disease, so we can look towards a world with-
out dementia.

Workshops in business planning focus
on resilience to natural disaster
Emergency and economic resilience planning is becoming
an essential focus for communities and Community Futures
Central Kootenay (CFCK) wants to teach you how to pre-
pare, respond and recover.
CFCK hosted a Community Economic Development
Forum on April 8 and 9 in Castlegar. The focus was on natu-
ral disasters and brought together experts who have helped
businesses and communities through recent natural disas-
ters, including flood and wildfire.
Almost 70 people from the Kootenay/Boundary region
attended the event. Representatives who have had to recover
from floods and fires in their community were there to dis-
cuss impacts and decisions made after their community was
impacted.
Based on event feedback, CFCK will be offering training
for Business Continuity Planning, which will teach busi-
nesses how to be prepared in the case of a natural disaster in
order to minimize the impact on their business and position
themselves for recovery. CFCK is also interested in working
with communities to support the development of Commu-
nity Economic Recovery plans, to help communities be bet-
ter prepared for the ‘new norm’.

Nelson’s SIP Talks a success
There were tears and more than just a bit of laughter as
the Canadian Federation of Women hosted their second
Stories Inspire Passion talk at the Prestige Lakeside Resort
on Saturday, March 30.
The afternoon started off with Stephanie LaMoignan
and Andriana Bergman, recipients of the past year’s Sel-
kirk Bursary and the CFUW Nelson’s 50th Anniversary
Scholarship. They shared their thoughts as to how it felt
to not only receive the financial support, but to know that
there is group of women who support them and cham-
pion them to continue to pursue education.
The seven SIP speakers all spoke from the heart about
what inspired them in their work and in their lives. The
first speaker, Astrid Heyerdahl, spoke of the love of her
growing family as well as her drive to make the museum
and gallery world more inclusive and welcoming space.
Rita Moir, a community activist, shared her mother’s
wise words, of which Rita comes back to again and again
throughout her life “You’re always on someone’s sh*t list”.
Jackie Little spoke about her lifelong passion – golf that
started with her father when she was just five years old.
Eileen Delehanty Pearkes spoke about her deep love and
commitment to the importance of water. Anna Purcell
discussed how being a latch key kid in the seventies influ-
enced her interest in the importance of the design of the
public realm. Dr. Marisa Van Der Vyver spoke to the need
to shower young girls and women with encouragement
and empower them to do anything. The final speaker of
the day was Lisel Forst, who spoke about the value of
‘freaking out’ and the surprising place that she found her
life’s work. All women spoke with passion and there were
