Writing Portfolio Cover Letter: Final Reflection

Dear Ms. Figueroa,

Coming into my senior year, I was always an average writer; always getting solid B’s on

my writing throughout high school. I have always been able to follow a template and go through

the process step by step. Over the years, I have struggled the most with my sentence structure

and how advanced my vocabulary is. My overall weakness as a writer has always, being able to

use figurative language and knowing where to place my commas and periods. Sometimes instead

of ending a sentence and starting a new one I will just place a comma and continue it. Senior has

strengthened the structure in my essays. I realized how easy it actually is to follow a template.

The goal I want to achieve as a writer, going beyond high school is to go past my comfort zone,

when it comes to research for essays requiring to search for evidence. I will spend more time on

my papers and taking them more seriously. I know being, more time orientated will help with the

understanding of the prompt, in all forms of writing. I have accomplished staying on topic and

continuing the essay with the prompt and not going off topic. This will help me in the future

because going off topic can get you points off and you will not get the credit you need.

Personally, I believe that all my writing in my portfolio has shaped my writing into what it is

today. Especially my social issue paper and my three paragraphs on Chaucer are my two most

prideful work. My social issue paper because I choose a topic that affects my generation and it
opened my eyes a lot on my rights as a minor. The three paragraphs on why beauty comes from

within from the wife of baths tale is a part of my best work because I actually tried really hard on

finding evidence and putting myself into the story. Going through my reflections and revisions I

have realized that I make a lot of the same mistakes. Very common mistakes that can be fixed

very easily. My teacher’s comments and feedback has influenced and improved my writing

because she has made me realize that my writing is actually very good there is just a few thing I

need to fix. For example the placement of commas and how I can reword things to make them

sound better. What I would want people to know of me as a writer is that I like to put my own

style on how I word things and I like to outline my work before I type my work. As learner, I

would want people to know that taking notes is my safety net, whenever I take notes I understand

whatever the topic is so much better with having notes. I have surprised myself in a few writing

pieces because I did not try my best and I still got a B so I realized if I did apply myself better

my grade can even higher.
