0 INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, road safety is one of a vital issue in the world. It is one of the greatest
public health issue. Commonly, every country in the world currently held such campaigns to
increase the awareness especially to students and kids. Millions lives are lost because of the
less awareness towards the road safety that brings to fatality such as road accidents. This
issue cannot be turned into a blind eye because it contributes to the rising of the statistic of
annual roads accidents. Apart from that, this issue also cannot be overlooked in order to
achieve the goals of sustainable development and growth. This issue concerns not only for
pedestrian and cyclist, but it concerns all type of road users.

Commonly, road safety can easily be defined as the safety of the road users. There are
rules and disciplines that should be followed in order to achieve the safety of the road users.
These rules and disciplines are compulsory to follow so that the risks of the road users are
decrease. In 2013, statistics reveal that in Asean country, Malaysia has the fourth highest
lives lost road accidents which in total of 6915. Meanwhile, in 2015 Batu Pahat had the
highest lives lost in accident which is 191 for the stated years. This proof that the awareness
of road safety is still low for people in Malaysia especially in Batu Pahat.

Apart from that, the road safety should not be taken lightly if the sustainable
development need to be achieved. This is because, a road accident can cause trauma or
physcologically affected. On the other words, road accidents can affect the country Gross
Domestic Product. As instant, road accidents victims may result in disability. Thus, this
disability may affect the victim’s financial sources and also affect the nations as well.
Therefore, road safety needs to be looked as a crucial problem that need to be solved.

In Traffic and Safety Engineering course of University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia,
students are required to accomplish a project based on road safety which named ‘Kids Safe’.
The objective of this programme is to increase the awareness of road safety among school
students. This program is a short seminar or activity that exposed the school students towards
the road safety. Apart from that, this program also focuses only on primary school students.
Thus, the type of road users for primary school is only pedestrians and cyclist. As in groups
only focusses on cyclist.
As for kids, cycling to school might looks fun. The kids can cycle to school with their
friends. But, the reality that they didn’t know is cycling to school might be risky and exposed
to danger. Cycling to school without adult’s supervision or without any safety measure, might
contribute to the increasing of road fatality statistics. According to Norlen. M, Wong.S,
Hizal.H, & Ilhamah.H (2011). An Overview of Road Traffics Injuries Among Children in
Malaysia and Its Implication On Road Traffic Injury Prevention Strategy (MRR 03/2011), at
least 10% from all deaths due to road traffic injuries are contributed by school children.

Next, Kids Safe programme also provide essential basic information for students that
cycle to school. As instant, school’s students were taught the first step before cycling which
is choosing the right size of bicycle. This matter might be overlooked by adults, but it is very
important in order to keep the safety of school’s student in a good condition. Moreover, basic
signages were taught to students so that they understand and aware what is the signage
around them during cycling to school. This basic information might help the school’s student
to keep aware with their surroundings.

3.0 OUTCOME ACTIVITIES

The goal of the “KidSafe” program is to help students from SK Sri Puleh aware of
traffic safety issues and take steps to remain safe whenever they are on or near a road. This
program is also to expose the UTHM students to the community so they get used when the jobs
do in futures. The students from SK Sri Puleh will able to understand what will deliver to them
about safety when on the road especially students that using bicycle.

This “KidSafe” program gets a very positive response when the students give
cooperation. The students followed all the instructions and tasks that have been given. The
media we used to delivered the message is using slideshow and video so they easy to
understand.

They will study about size of bicycle that suitable for them, components of bicycle that

can prevent that risks to happen when they aware what happen on surrounding them.

This program also to cultivate the students from SK Sri Puteh to use bicycle safety
equipment especially helmet and pads to prevent they to get injured. This is also to encourage
the students using bicycle lane that has been provide to accident between them with others.

Besides, the UTHM students also get the benefits and new experience from this
program. The UTHM student was exposed to community to prepare them towards to the jobs
and careers after graduate. This learning process give benefits that allows the students to learn
more about their personal motivations, practice academic material outside of the context of the
classroom and testing, develop critical thinking skills while solving real-world problems, and
to think about problems and social issues in new ways.

This program of experiential learning, or applying what students have learned in the
classroom to the real world, has a lot of positive benefits for students apart from meeting a
requirement to graduate. These include a better understanding of the value of teamwork,
decision-making skills, development of leadership abilities, and the gain of practical skills.
Working with a team, students would gain a better understanding of the importance of
teamwork and sharing information in a usable way.

One of the big ways that students will benefit from this program is through personal
development. Students will find that they are able to develop skills in leadership,
communication, working well with a team, and finding solutions for problems. In addition, this
program shows prospective that students can balance activities with assignments and that have
good time management.
4.0 RECOMMENDATION

Based on the program that have been held before, there are some actions and things
that could been done to make the programme become better. There are some
recommendations that could been done to avoid any upcoming problems that might affect the
programme to run smoothly. One of the recommendations are some issues with the time for
the programme. The time for the programme is a little bit to short and everyone need to rush
to do the activities. Within the time that have been provided, if the time is longer, the
knowledge transfer and sharing to the students will be a lot more.

Next, the space provided to do activities for the programme. The space should be
more spacious and with a good and a proper environment. By that, everyone will feel more a
lot comfortable. Furthermore, there is some issue with the group member distribution. For an
example, some group member for the activities consist of only year one student. The group
distribution should be done by combining the group within year one up to year six student.

Besides that, there are problem with transportation due to the programme day. Some
of students from UTHM does not have their own transportation. They need to borrow their
friend’s car or motorcycle to go there. It will be a lot easier if the transportation is provided.
Neithermore, during the programme being held, the situation was a little bit chaotic because
some group does not have a proper preparation. Everyone that took part in the programme
should be more prepared to avoid any problem from happen. Lastly, there are some issue
with the budget for the programme for student prizes. The prize was prepared by UTHM
students using their own money. If there is a budget provided, the prizes will be a lot
exclusive.

5.0 CONCLUSION

As a conclusion, this programme mot only give a lot of positive impacts towards
students of SK Sri Puteh, but also for UTHM’s students. This can be called as win win
situation. Even though there are few things need to improve, but yet this programme is still
good and needed for future. The rising of the statistics of road accident give a lot of bad
impact to a country. Through this programme, the data can be reduced.

Through this programme, we can see that the students of SK Sri Puteh did not know
about the basic road signage. Before the programme began, the students had been asked about
the basic signage. Yet, the result is worrying. The students need to exposed to such
programme so that they have the knowledge about the basic signage of the road. Moreover,
the programme conduct by our group is not strict enough for school students. The programme
was held joyfully and full of excitement. Not only that, they are also given a token as they
answer the quiz correctly. Through this method, the students enjoy and curios to study more.

Apart from that, impacts for UTHM students can be seen through this programme. As
instant, UTHM students got to master their leadership skill. This is because, during giving
talk to the SK Sri Puteh, a good leadership skill is needed in order to keep them focus on the
talk. Moreover, UTHM students also learnt to manage a programme correctly. Through this
program we know how to keep the process of the programme going correctly. In addition,
UTHM students also know how to manage time efficiently. Since time management is vital
in daily life, the needed of mastering time management is high. Through this programme, we
learnt to manage time efficiently.
