Mount Rinjani dominates the landscape on the
small Indonesian island of Lombok. It's a paradise
for trekkers – but as an active volcano, Rinjani can
be dangerous, reminding locals and visitors alike of
nature's power.

At 3,726 meters tall, Mount Rinjani is the
second highest volcano in Indonesia, after Mount
Kerinci on the island of Sumatra.
Rinjani's beauty has made Lombok a center
for eco-tourism, with the volcano a popular
destination for intrepid hikers. But an increase in the
number of visitors on Rinjani has also led to
environmental problems, as tour groups fail to take
their litter back down with them.
Within the mountain is a crescent shaped lake,
the breathtaking Segara Anak which is a spiritual
place. The Balinese come here each year and
perform a ceremony to the mountain spirit. The
Wetu Telu people also regard the lake as holy and
come here to pray on full moon nights. This lake of
sulfur is located 600 meters below the crater rim.
Rising from the waters of this lake is a new
volcano, Mt Baru, which is a result of a series of
eruptions during the 1990’s.

Rinjani Mountain is rich in variety of flora
and fauna and vegetation types. There are families

limited area of spread. On the south western side of

forest and drier climate in the east, and savannah in
the north east. Note, flora includes the everlasting
edelweiss flower, tiger, owls, orchid, alang-alang
grass, and cemara trees.
Three-day Rinjani route from Senaru to the
crater rim, down to the Crater Lake then on to
Sembalun Lawang, is considered one of the best
treks in South East Asia. More adventurous trekkers
Lawang and takes four days, finishing up in Senaru.
