ABRASION TEST

SIGNIFICANCE:

 This test determines the wearing resistance of coarse aggregate.

 It evaluates the structural strength of coarse aggregate.

 Gives an indication of quality as determined by resistance to impact and wear.

 It determines whether the aggregate will have degration during traffic or rolling.

APPARATUS:

 Los Angeles Machine

 Standard Sieves with pan and cover
 Abrasive Charges
 Pans
 Balance & Weights
 Drying Oven (w/ controlled temp.)

PROCEDURES:

1. Oven dry the coarse aggregate to constant weight/mass at 110±5 °C & shall conform to
one of the following table:

SIEVE SIZES GRADING & WEIGHT OF TEST SAMPLES

Passing Retained A B C D
1½” (37.5 mm) 1” (25 mm) 1250 ± 25
¾” (19 mm) 1250 ± 25
½” (12.5 mm) 1250 ± 25 2500 ± 10
3/8” (9.5 mm) 1250 ± 25 2500 ± 10
¼” (6.30 mm) 2500 ± 10
#4 (4.75 mm) 2500 ± 10
#8 (2.36 mm) 5000 ± 10

NOTE:

- Spheres are approximate 46.8 mm Ø, weighing 390 & 455 g.

GRADING NO. OF SPHERES WEIGHINH OF CHARGE, g.
A 12 5000 ± 25
B 11 4584 ± 25
C 8 3330 ± 25
D 6 2500 ± 25

2. Place the test sample and abrasive charge in the Los Angeles Machine (LAM), rotated at a
speed of 30-33 rpm, 500 rev. & 15.5 mins.

3. At completion test, discharge material into #12 (1.70 mm) standard sieve. Sieve the
material coarser than 1.70 mm. using the standard procedure o sieving aggregates.

4. Wash the sieved sample, oven dry the sample to constant weight/mass at 110±5 °C,
allow to cool & weigh accurately
EQUATIONS:

NOTE:

- Maximum percentage of abrasion loss allowed for concrete coarse aggregate is

40%. - Item 405(structural concrete), using #12 (1.7 mm.) sieve

LIMITATIONS/VARIATIONS:

- Sample retained at #10 (2 mm) soil aggregates, 5000 g
