CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Social adjustment is considered as one of the major contributing psychological

factor in characterizing the individuals. The learners have to develop the adjust-

mental ability which in turn will make the individuals to grow as responsible citizens

of the society. Students should have adjustments in behavior as they condition up

with a new environment. If the students lack behavior, the institution should take

necessary measures to develop and shape their beings. Research is needed to

examine the unique challenges these students face, how these students utilize to

adapt in the surroundings, and how effective these systems are in supporting the

specific needs of a transferee student.

For first-generation and lower-income students, unconfident learners and

students who lack clear goals, the stakes of these challenges are particularly high.

Public Agenda research found that community college students often blame

themselves for the barriers they face in seeking to transfer. Students not only lose

time and money as they attempt to navigate broken systems, they also lose hope

in their ability to make a better life through education.

2

Objectives

The goal of this study is to better understand the challenges these transfer

students face, how they use institutional services to help them transition, and to

determine whether they feel supported, welcomed, and appreciated at their new

institution. Below are more of our objectives for this research:

1. To assess the level of social adjustment among students.

2. To find out the relationship between the dimensions of social adjustment.

3. To determine the common causes why student transfer

4. To identify the importance of studying the catalysis and causation of 7 th to 11th

grade transferees in Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy

5. To analyze the effect of transferees students

3

Statement of the Problem

Being a transferee student means having a new environment, new colleagues,

new friends, new subjects etc. But not everyone quickly adapts and feels

comfortable being in new surroundings. Some tend to feel alone, some worry that

they won’t fit in, some are scared of bullies and some don’t feel adequate which

results to social problems. As Humanities and Social Sciences students we are

eager to study what adjustments, adaptations, acceptance and challenges

students from 7th to 11th grade have encountered and what is its denouement to

them.

1. How can the students cope up

1.1 The adjustments

1.2 The adaptation

1.3 The new environment

2. What are the challenges that they have encountered

2.1 Did they feel like giving up?

2.2 What are their insights and perceptions

2.3 Are they still finding it hard to adapt?

3. How can they manage

3.1 Their ways

3.2 How do they feel about their new surroundings and colleagues

4

Significance of the study

The purpose of this research is to better understand this growing, diverse

population of new students in Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy. To study the

catalysis and adaptation of students to a new institution and their ways of coping

up:

To the school

This research paper may help increase the statistics of the school. Since the new

students will feel congenial and satisfied it will be another access for the promotion

of the school.

To the teachers

This research paper can help them understand why a student acts differently and

how new environment affects somebody.

To the parents

This research paper can be a guide to those parents who worry about their child’s

adjustments. This can serve as a manual of understanding, guiding, counseling

and mentoring.

To the students

We hope this research paper helps you earn your confidence, boost your self-trust

and helps you in socializing even though you are a new student.

Scope, Limitations and Delimitation

This research involves 100% of the population of the 7th to 11th grade

Transferee students of Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy who will serve as

respondents of the study. Random sampling will be used in selecting the

respondents.

The investigation is limited in determining The Catalysis and Causation of 7th

to 11th Grade Transferees in Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy. Furthermore, the

process also attempts to determine the effects, common problems and perception

of teachers to the adjustments and challenges of the students.

The treatment of data is delimited to the interpretation of the perceptions of

all data gathered which will be used in forming the answer or the different question

posited will be taken from the questionnaire/checklist distributed to the supposed

respondents. The data gathered will be subjected to statistical treatment in the

attempt to arrive at desired result.

Demographic factors are also important considerations when studying how to

best support and encourage students to succeed in higher education even if they

are new students. In this study, the challenges faced by transfer students and their

experiences with institutional support systems need to be examined. The factors

of age, gender, race, ethnicity, military status, class level, and institutional grade

point average (GPA) will be analyzed for differences in the experiences of these

transfer students.

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Literature Review
For the purpose of this literature review, the term “transfer student” refers to

any undergraduate student who has credits and has attended more than one

institution after graduating. Transfer students vary in numerous ways including

demographics, educational history, challenges faced, preferences, and

experiences. Through this literature review, the diversity of transfer students and

how these impacts the support services needed for retention will be addressed.

Students who have transferred from numerous types of institutional sectors will be

included in this research, with the focus being on the students’ experience of

transferring from their original school(s) to a new one.

Local Studies

The Philippine’s education system is managed by the Philippine

department of education. It controls the general running of schools and colleges

in the Philippines and controls the curriculum in the Philippine’s education

system. It also details things such as how teachers are to be hired and what

qualifications they should have.

10

Based on the researcher, a web-based enrollment system for Veritas Parochial

School (VPS) in Web Based enrollment system, Manila was developed to help its

students enroll in a more efficient way without the hassles of waiting long hours in

filling out forms, which sometimes become redundant, or to stand in line and pay

at the cashier. It is with the Web-based Enrollment System for VPS that this new

style of enrollment may be achieved.

This new type of system offers its students new options for enrolling at VPS. By

logging on to VPS website, one can register and enroll subjects for a school year.

With these, all the students are required to fill out certain forms that do not take

more than a few minutes to accomplish. The system stores its records in the

school database for future references. Confirmation of the transaction made by

the students need to be verified, the payment of tuition fees must be made in the

schools registrar. The students may also browse the web site of VPS and he can

check his current account. He can also refer to the list of the school current

tuition fee rates (Pascual & Riceo, 2008) According to Lopez (2005), a

registration system helps and provides efficient and reliable services to the

students, enrollment personnel and administration. Moreover, this system

improved the process of enrollment in terms of searching, retrieving and subject

schedules. While in a study conducted by Cayabyab (2007), many problems and

difficulties were identified in the existing system of Dagupan City National High

School (DCNHS). These major concerns are affecting the efficient enrollment

system of students. Security of the students records were found to be at high

risk. The current system may fail to protect some important documents. It has

also untimely and inefficient report generation. A computerized system for

DCNHS shall result to a significant increase in the number of enrollees Network-

Based Enrollment system Conde (2007) in his study entitled “Network-bases

of enrollment and manual handling of information and reports of the students is

very laborious one. The proponents developed a network based system

enrollment system to the said school to solve the huge amount of task. Garcia

(2002) created the “LSPC Enrollment System”, the study can be a great help to

persons concerned during the enrollment period, the registrar, instructor of the

students as they retrieval necessary information when needed and lessen the

burden manually browsing over enrollment slip for record purposes . Saayo et.al

(2008) developed the system “Network based automated Enrollment and grading

system for Morong National High School. Due to increasing population of the

institution, and the school currently implementing the manual system, every

student spends a lot of time during enrollment period, such as paying their tuition

fees and processing the school requirements. Valina et.al (2009), in this work

entitled “Network-based student Permanent Record keeping and Enrollment

System of Balian National High School”. This System was made to lessen the

time and effort exerted by both student and school employees. It is also made to

give accurate reports and keep records of every students every students and for

easy and fast way of enrollment. Soria (2006), constructed a system entitled

“Network-based Computerized inventory System for the supply office o the LSPC

main campus. With the advancement of technology, devices and machines were

improve , developed and inverted to cope up with the need of new world. There

are different systems designed for reliable, efficient and very useful to the user.

Cabang et al. (2003) developed the ‘computerized Students Record Monitoring

System of Siniloan National High School”, Computerized Student data will be

exceedingly helped to the user through continuous management of the School. It

could help the registrar for a less effort services in the institutions especially in

updating, printing and deleting student’s record. Velasco (2002) Study entitled

“Maulawin National High School Student Information System” cited that

maintaining students, records manually is a very difficult task and time

consuming. In that case, computerization system that can help and handle 17

this data needed to speed up the process of student’s record keeping and to

promote and reliability. Cura et al. (2004), Designed system entitled

“computerized inventory system of office of the supply in LSPU” is capable of

handling voluminous data about the flow of item insurance and reply to the flow

of items’ issuance and return in supply office Torres et al. (2002), conducted a

study that resolves around the importance computerization of student

information. This study was conducted with the hope that it would help minimize

time and effort in processing student’s information in Maulawin National High

School. The basic feature of this study is after the storage and access of

retrieving and updating the data. Alcaira (1999), stated that the using of computer

are continue to grow, the need for a more timely information and data processing

comes on demand keeping the record of any manual operations need the

application, because handling it manually will only be conflicting. Aravia et al.

(2002), show the growing importance of computers in the society. The

significance of the study revolves the automation of student permanent record

keeping. Garnace (1999), developed application software for the computerized

information system of a commercial piggery using the concept of the database

and implemented it in database. Automation Enrollment System Gumitao (2001),

system is designed to provide reports of the list of enrollment per school year,

periodical grade of students, and list of new, old and transferees Revalla (2005)

created an Automation Enrollment System for the computer Science Department

of the Laguna College business and Arts. The study was conceived because of

the need to update the current registration system of LCBA, which is done

manually. Her study, was based on the special problem of Mr. Bonifacio E.

Bacani, Jr. about “Student Record information System”. Kampitan (2000)

developed an Enrollment System of Liceo De Victoria that is designed to keep

the students records. This is used to provide an effective and faster of providing

information of the student and also the accounting purposes’ Liceo De Victoria

Enrollment was developed and implement using relational database and

designed in clipper 5.3. Earlier, Encila (1999) Introduced the Enrollment System

for the computer Science Department of LCBA and traders, designed of

enrollment System is advantageous to the school because it speed up

theprocess and with only a minimum amount of power and resources. Cacao

(2002), designed the “Morning Star Montessori School incorporated form

Record keeping System, to know how to read sign the data that is used to be

kept the record files of students and also that, it could be mange more efficiently

in computer with his project. Quiver (2001), developed a program using database

III which capable of retrieving, access in manipulating of data in easy way. A

computerized system to minimized the lost of record and burden of work was

designed by Pajarillo in 2002. Monsalve and Ilagan (2005), developed a program

and designed using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and Microsoft access. The system

is capable of receiving access, searching items, providing adequate information

and data gathering. IPizzara and Veridiano (2001), this system was done using

Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. This conducted system goes along the trend of

computerization to be in the field of competitiveness and survive to the

complicated works. Relayo (1999) this study will assist the researcher regarding

to the use of database and Visual Basic. This system have been designed in

order to speed up the access and retrieval information and to lessen manual

effort involve in the library routine of transaction. Magalang (2003), he proposed

this to developed software that will help the management of the school “lyceum’

in giving good service to its student in speeding of the process involve in

monitoring account acquired during the enrollment & other payment transaction.

Lazaro (2004), this study entitled “Liceo de Los Banos record monitoring system”

only authorized persons and to ensure security of data basic information.

Lumbers (2002), stated in her study entitled “a systematic enrollment process

using database system in Saint John academy. Calamba, Laguna” that the

application of database system to the enrollment process will greatly increase its

efficiency; automation of enrollment process will upgrade the quality of the

services provided for the qualified enrollees. Online enrollment system An Online

Registration System was proposed to replace the manual enrollment system of

Cavite Maritime Institute in order to advance an organized flow of transaction and

an ease of work concerned on how the manual enrollment performs throughout

the institution’s operations. The numerous transactions that the manual system

covers, such as updating and adding student records, generating the advising

and assessment slips, and the like considering the manual operating system to

be inefficient for the need of the institution. Since the study involves proper

record handling, tracing the constraints and evaluation of the manual system is

essential (Bacala and Reano, 2009). In educational institutions like Harvent

School in Dagupan City, Composed of elementary and high school level. The

school puts premium to its registration. The enrollment process is the initial stage

in gathering bonafide fide and accurate student information necessary to

establish student permanent records. A registration and billing system is needed

by the institution to address the stated situation. The study has been made to

help Harvent School gather fast and deliver accurate information (Calabozo &

Fernandez, 2006) Online enrollment system is utilized today by many universities

to facilitate the enrollment of their students into classes every semester (Gaton,

2012). The system allows students to choose courses they want to take with the

available class schedules. This allows students to make up their time schedules

for different class courses without time schedule conflicts. After the allotted

enrollment period, the system runs and assigns slots to students. With the Online

Registration System, students could log in, check their schedule, and set desired
Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon
15

changes and pay online without having to stand in a line and rushing to meet

deadlines to accomplish all the transactions required for enrollment (Ella, 2012).

The Online Registration System is a method designed to perform the process

involved in registration, advising, assessments, and payments of students as well

as scheduling of classes in any educational institution. According to Aquino

(2005), importance of computer application is increasing day by day. In the latest

decades of the millennium winning organizations are those which are willing to

integrate business strategy and information technology in plying their respective

trades. The use of information technology results for them to be able to develop

products fast and make decisions fast, ability to have fluid organization

structures, able to cope with the demanding work force and external environment

by the rapid development of innovative approaches, and lastly, using information

system confirms the company’s vision and mission. Schools use information

systems in the way of implementing an enrollment system. This results for them

to attract enrollees and earn an income. Enrollees are attracted because the use

of the said system makes the transactions faster and easier. Alcuaz (1988) stated

that the use of computer can give competitive advantage and improve

profitability. Computer helps to increase the productivity of people. This is true

whether they are working alone or working with others within a formal

organization such as business corporations. As said by Adrian(2011), “Lack of

enrollment system in schools can lead to chaos and troubles.” Students will be

confused on what they should do to be able to enroll that is why such systems is

extremely useful in the way that it gives an ease on working on enrollment

processes. Enrollment is very useful in retrieving vital information of the students.

Without it can lead difficulty both for the administration of school and student in

enrollment processes Many countries today, especially the developing nations

are challenged by the rapid technological changes. This has radically changed

the living and working styles of the entire society. This transformation has been
Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon
16

driven partly by rapid technological innovation. While in the 20th century, people

saw the rise of the industrial revolution with steam-powered machines

intensifying and expanding human productive power, the 21st century was

characterized by the birth of machine-powered flight and the emergence of

broadcasting and computer technologies that extend the reach of human

creativity even more and made new ways possible by which humans could live

and work together (Tinio, 2002). The transformation of manual enrollment

transaction to automate and now into a web-based automation is one example of

what was driven partly by the rapid technological innovation. Any ways just to

make work easier and faster like enrollment transactions is possible with the

emergence of computer technologies. Technology innovation had influenced

man’s work from data processing, business transaction, research, planning,

monitoring and even in medical operation on human anatomy are now entrusted

to computer technology. Web applications are popular due to ubiquity of its

applications. The ability to update and maintain web applications without

distributing and installing software on potentially thousands of client computers

are key reasons for its popularity. A significant advantage of building web

applications to support a standard browser feature is the ability to perform as

specified, regardless of the operating system installed on a given client (Bacala

&Reanno, 2009). Web-based enrollment system A web-based enrollment system

has features that meet most of academic institutions system’s needs and

requirements. This includes standardized modules for student registration,

enrollment, grade management, and other modules that are deemed necessary

to operate a school. Based on the researcher, a web-based enrollment system

for Veritas Parochial School (VPS) in Web Based enrollment system, Manila was

developed to help its students enroll in a more efficient way without the hassles

of waiting long hours in filling out forms, which sometimes become redundant, or

to stand in line and pay at the cashier. It is with the Web-based Enrollment
Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon
17

System for VPS that this new style of enrollment may be achieved. This new type

of system offers its students new options for enrolling at VPS. By logging on to

VPS website, one can register and enroll subjects for a school year. With these,

all the students are required to fill out certain forms that do not take more than a

few minutes to accomplish. The system stores its records in the school database

for future references. Confirmation of the transaction made by the students need

to be verified, the payment of tuition fees must be made in the schools

registrar. The students may also browse the web site of VPS and he can check

his current account. He can also refer to the list of the school current tuition fee

rates (Pascual & Riceo, 2008)

Foreign Studies
Staff and faculty often underestimate the significance of the transfer student

population; Handel (2013) reported information from an analysis compiled by the

National Student Research Clearinghouse showing that 45% of students who

completed a bachelor’s degree during the 2011-2012 school year previously

enrolled in a community college. This research showed a significant increase from

previous years; Ishitani (2008) cited research from the National Center for

Education Statistics (NCES) who found that 22% of students who began their

higher education journey at a two-year college during the 1989-1990 academic

year transferred to a four-year institution within 5 years. Also, community colleges

are the fastest growing sector in higher education, currently enrolling half of all

undergraduate students (Fann, 2013). Students are frequently choosing to begin

their educational experience at a community college largely due to the appeal of

open access admissions and affordability (Nowak, 2004). Handel (2013) discussed

how Latinos, the fastest growing minority in the United States, have a tendency to

enroll in community colleges, which will also boost enrollment in this sector. As the

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

18

population of transfer students continues to rise with the increase of enrollment in

community colleges along with other factors, it is especially important to consider

their particular needs. Regarding community college students, Miller (2013) stated

that, “more information is needed on effective institutional support mechanisms for

those students that increase the likelihood of successful transfer and eventual

degree completion” While institutions have been beginning to do a better job in

reaching out to students from diverse populations, the problem seems to lie in

defining “diversity.” Transfer students are not commonly included in diversity

initiatives on campuses, despite their unique and wide range of characteristics.

Tobolowsky and Cox (2012) argued that the most important area in which transfer

students are extremely diverse is their prior

educational experiences. Nowak (2004) asserted that it is extremely difficult to

define transfer students and that the only commonality among these students is

that they have previous credits and have attended an institution prior to their

current school. It is important to note that there are different types of transfer

students. For example, research conducted by Wang (2009) focused on

community college students who transferred to four-year institutions and factors

that predicted and limited their success. Lester (2006) discussed how students

who transition from a two-year college to a four-year university comprise 25% of

the student population nationally. More recent data from the National Student

Clearinghouse Research Center found that, “one-third of all students switch

institutions at least once before earning a degree” (Gonzalez, 2012, p. 1).

Other research focuses on various subsets of the transfer population, transfer

students in general without controlling for previous institutional types, or specific

functional areas in student affairs highlighting best practices to help the population

as a whole

This literature review discusses relevant terminology, demographic factors,

challenges faced by transfer students, grades and degree completion, diversity,

and tendencies of the transfer student population as well as retention initiatives

including orientation programs, advising techniques, and financial aid. Acquiring

the knowledge necessary to best help the transfer student population succeed is

useful for every student affairs professional, policy maker, professor, and other

individuals who work with or make decisions that influence students in higher

education.

CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the procedures employed by the researchers in

concluding this study.

Research Design

The researchers applied the descriptive method of research since there is

the objective of discovering and determining the present status the catalysis and

causation of 7th to 11th grade

Transferees in Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy.

Aquino (1991) cited that the descriptive research is fact finding with

adequate interpretation. It is something more and beyond just data gathering but

carried up to the level of adequate interpretation.

Calderon (1991) supports the use of descriptive method of research

wherein the present nature, composition or process of phenomena are described,

recorded, analyzed and interpreted thereby showing how persons or group of

things behave or function at the moment.

David (2005) defined research design as a plan or course of action which

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon

20

the research follows in order to answer the research question/s or solve the

research problem, an explanatory study or correlation research that goes beyond

description of the problem or variables. Descriptive study aims to examine the

extent of relationship between the factors or variables by determining how changes

in one variables to changes in other variables.

Respondents/Subjects of the Study

The research employed a sampling which included 100% of the population

of the transferee students in Middle School and Upper School of Bixby Knolls

Preparatory Academy. Overall, the total number of respondents are 56 students.

Data Gathering Instrument

The instrument in this study are self-made questionnaires. 12 questions are

constructed for each respondent.

The test were used to ascertain the perception of the respondents to their

adaptations. The first set consists of 8 questions for the first part. The questionnaire

employs the respondent’s assessment of the student’s adjustment, cope ups,

challenges and transformation in the past few months in their new environment.

The second part of the questionnaire focused on the perceptions and opinions of

student.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers first prepared research proposal for the approval by the Instructor

of Research, Mrs. Joan Kristine Francia. The proposal was scrutinized after and

the necessary revisions were implemented, the researchers prepared the first draft

of the questionnaire. The subject-instructor perused the later refined questionnaire.

Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy | San Antonio, Quezon
21

Finally, the copies of the questionnaire were distributed to the respondents. As

expected, 100% of the distributed questionnaires were retrieved.

The gathered data were tallied tabulated, analyzed and interpreted through

employment of the most appropriate statistical tools and procedures that provided

answers for the accomplishment of the research objectives.

The first draft of the study was again checked by the study-instructor.

Revisions were again implemented to come up with the more refined study. After

the defense, the final draft was encoded, printed and later submitted for reference

and filing purposes.

Statistical Treatment of Data

To analyze and interpret data gathered from the results of the respondents’

assessment of the questionnaire items, the researchers employed the following

statistical techniques and procedures:

1. Frequency Distribution. This statistical tool was utilized to present data

clearly and accurately in the tabulated from with corresponding rows and

columns for each specified class or category.

2. Simple Percentage. This technique was employed to determine the

proportion of one class relative to the total number of respondents in all

classes. Specifically, it was used to analyze the specific items in the

profile of the respondents.

P=F/N (100)

Where: P=Percentage

F= Frequency of respondents belonging to class

N= total number of respondents in all classes

/= Operational symbol of division

100= Constant multiplier

3. Average Method or Simple Mean. This statistics was used to analyze

the scores obtained by the respondents on the given test, the formula of

which is as follows:

X = Ʃx/N

Where: X= Average

Ʃ= Summation symbol

/= Operational symbol for division

x= Raw score

N= Number of cases

4. Weighted Mean. This method was used to interpret the data from the

respondents’ assessment of the questionnaire items relative to the

extent of effectiveness of the strategies used by the teachers. Specially,

this statistic was used to determine the weight in the terms of the mean

response on the items provided in the questionnaire proper.

The formula given for this statistical tool is as follows:

WM or X= Ʃwf/ N

Where: WM or X= Weighted mean

Ʃ= Summation symbol

f= Frequency of each option

w= assigned weight

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of data gathered

from the respondents. Data presented and analyzed include the respondent’s

catalysis in the process of adjusting to their new school.

1 Knowing the Catalysis and Causation

In our study involving the new students of Bixby Knolls Preparatory

Academy, we have come up and gathered some data. In statement number one,

stating the levels of socialization the weighted mean was 3.35. Most answers

were neutral particularly among the males. In the second statement we had the

weighted mean of 4.5 and most the answers were disagree. The third statement

which is if they already felt comfort with their classmates, most answered neutral

and got the mean of 4. The fourth statement which was about their academic and

non academic tasks, we had the weighted mean of 4.15 and most student agreed

and said that they can both manage academic and non academic tasks. In the

fifth statement, it was about if the students enjoy what they do and most of the

strongly agreed and some felt neutral about it. We had the weighted mean of

4.06. On the seventh statement we tried to grasp some personal issues such as

bullying we gathered the weighted mean of 4 and most student stated that they

are not bullied. Lastly, for the eighth statement, the students believe that the

challenges they are facing improves them as person and we earned the weighted

mean of 4

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND

RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, conclusions and

recommendations.

Summary

Overall, the findings from this study were consistent with the literature.

Academic advisors play an important role in helping students make a successful

transition to their new institution and should be friendly and knowledgeable.

Institutions should communicate properly with all incoming students, not just

freshmen, and should provide an orientation tailored to meet the needs of the

transfer student population so that they do not feel lost and disconnected. An

orientation would also likely help students understand what support services are

offered on campus and students may be more inclined to utilize these services

when needed. Providing proper orientation services for students to learn about

the resources available at the new institution and the different policies and

procedures is vital for their success. Also, all of these aforementioned factors

play a role in creating a positive campus climate for transfer students, who may

feel dissatisfied with their new university based on their negative experiences

with advisors, lack of institutional communication, or confusing structure of the

services offered on campus. Also, without staff understanding the needs of this

population, necessary services are not offered at all or in the correct manner to

assist these students and instead makes them feel disconnected from their new

institution, which makes it more difficult for them to acclimate and succeed. The

results from this study further illustrate how important it is not to neglect the

transfer student population.

Findings

In the process of the research findings were encountered. It showed that

most students that transfer in Bixby Knolls Preparatory Academy rapidly develop

their relationship with their new classmates and teachers. In the fifth statement in

the survey that we had given to them almost 93% strongly agrees that they enjoy

what they do and all the activities in their new school. This shows that the

administration is doing a great job in honing their students. Findings about

socializing showed that they find it easy to communicate with other people inside

the school. On statement number seven, which tackled about bullying, we are

glad to say that Middle School and Upper School Department of Bixby Knolls

Preparatory Academy do not have a serious case of bullying. Almost all the

students disagreed and stated that they didn’t experience bullying inside the

campus. They were all able to face the challenges they had encountered in the

past few months of studying in the school.

Conclusions

Adolescent is a time of dramatic physical, cognitive, emotional, and social

change. Student develop on many levels, entering new endeavors and worlds

daily. They begin to learn how to establish healthy relationships, find socially

acceptable ways to engage in activities that interest them, and make their way

through school. However, a number of students experience more trials than their

peers. Some are unable to find solid emotional and social ground as they

progress through their developmental stages. An inability to “fit it” can have

behavioral manifestations that cause significant difficulty for both children

themselves and those around them. When a child’s behavior violates the

accepted norms at home, at school, or in the community, negative repercussions

can result, such as suspensions or expulsions from school. A student’s

demographic and family characteristics have some association with his or her

social adjustment, in that boys are more likely than girls to see friends regularly

but also are more likely to get into trouble. In addition, students from more

affluent families are more likely to belong to a group and less likely to be the

subject of disciplinary actions at school. Students whose families are involved at

their schools and who have high expectations for their educational futures tend to

be more socially integrated.

Recommendations

One recommendation for assisting transfer students overall, but especially

individuals that face additional challenges due to factors related to their race or

ethnicity, is to develop a mentoring program. Mentors could be a staff or faculty

member, or even a fellow transfer student. Having a mentor on campus would likely

resolve some of the difficulties that transfer students felt in this study. A mentor

could help the student feel at home, increase institutional communication, and

serve to connect students with appropriate support services as needed to help

them successfully transition and ultimately graduate. Mentoring programs also

have become increasingly popular on college campuses to support African-

American students. Creating mentoring programs to assist the diverse population

of transfer students could be monumental to increase retention, persistence, and

graduation rates, along with allowing these students to have a positive experience

while in college. Individuals working in higher education should educate

themselves about the unique needs of the diverse transfer student population to

improve, create, and implement services and programs to help these students

succeed. This large and growing population cannot continue to be neglected.

Administrators should not assume that just because transfer students have

previous experience that they will automatically understand the policies and

procedures at their new institution. Academic advisors should be approachable

and able to provide students with the information they need. Institutions should

create tailored orientation programs to assist students make a successful

transition, to increase and improve institutional communication with these

students, and to help them be aware of and understand the goals of the support

services offered on campus. Additional research should be conducted to better

understand the changing needs of these students, and professionals working in

higher education should continually educate themselves about this neglected

student population.
