The telescope in the library and the scum of salt

Abstract

This article describes a pleasant activity performed at the Pegasus Astroclub on a Sunday
afternoon. The picture has been taken, after 10 children from the astroclub have watched a
movie - The first man (2018).

Despite the serious, official activities carried out in the framework of projects with non-
reimbursable financing, the small amateur astronomers enjoy pleasing moments of a non
virtual social life. As you can see in the picture that is attached to this article, the cildren are
good friends, although for some, the distances between their homes are quite large.
Their friendship, beyond age differences or social status, is based on a common passion -
astronomy.
Three years ago, when the Pegas Astroclub was set up at the Cotnari Public Library, no one
suspected the impact it would have on youth training.
Together, we have realized in time that astronomy binds pleasantly with camps, outdoor
parties, SF movies, poetry or photography.
And all these things are possible with minimal resources: a telescope, a binoculars, a blanket
or a tent, and a good mood to share with others the wonders of nature and the sky.
The astroclub's activities have proven how useful and enjoyable is a science, learning
practically and not just as a theory.
Thus, mathematics, physics or chemistry, along with astronomy, have become friendly
sciences. The children can assimilate those things with pleasure, and also with the belief that
at some point they can also contribute to the progress of these sciences.
And perhaps the most important thing is that all these things happen in rural areas, where
children and young people do not have many learning or leisure options
But not just the kids. Parents, relatives, neighbors, visitors from other countries can spend
together unforgettable moments under the starry sky. For an evening or two, they can forget
about the tyranny of the current technology, the duty of service, or the pressing problems of
the day.
The library thus becomes, through an astroclub, a central point of the community; an
investment in education and a better future.
And what is more important than a beautiful evening for our children, at the library, on a
Sunday, safe and in an environment of education?
That is why we believe that anyone who invests in an astroclub, in a rural or urban library,
invests in a dream. Both for children and for each of us.
