COURSE DESCRIPTION
Welcome to ESL Language Arts! This is a multi-leveled class with various English
proficiencies. Students will learn to grow in their English skills at a pace that best fits their individual
learning styles and needs. This course includes spelling, writing, grammar, and vocabulary building. It
introduces students to basic structures and vocabulary of the English language through the skills of
reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Students utilize level-appropriate conventions of grammar
and punctuation with minimum errors as well as learn to communicate using social and formal English
in different settings.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to:
1) Write clearly and consistently
2) Recognize and apply grade appropriate vocabulary
3) Understand and effectively apply the writing process, functions of English grammar,
capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing or speaking
4) Use technology, including the internet, to produce and publish writing as well as interact and
collaborate with others
5) Practice acquired English skills (social and formal English) in different settings

Students, please be responsible in bringing the following supplies to class:

 1 set of color pencils or 1 box of crayons
 ***Recommended personal hygiene: hand sanitizer and tissue

GRADING
Student achievement will be assessed and reported using a four-point proficiency scale instead of
the current percentage grade on specific standard, skills or topics. The simplified scale gives
students, teachers, and parents a quicker and clearer reference to easily determine which standards
have been mastered and which need further study. These levels of proficiency will then be translated
or converted to an easily recognizable letter grade.

E = Excellent: 95%-100%
Always prepared, notes taken include required elements and additional relevant information, participates
actively, follows ALL classroom and school policies, excellent performance, shows independent initiative.

S = Satisfactory: 70%-94%
Not always prepared, notes taken include well-required elements; no missing information, follows some of the
classroom policies, occasionally participates in class activities, requires occasional redirection due to
socialization.

N = Needs Improvement: 60%-69%


Attitude needs improvement, notes taken has some missing information or contain minimal information, does
not follow classroom policies, frequently off task.

U = Unsatisfactory: 59% and below


Disruptive in class, does not take notes, inattentive, negative attitude, needs constant supervision.

CLASSROOM RULES
1. Come to class on time and prepared.
2. Always raise your hand for permission to speak or leave your seat.
3. Respect your classmates and teacher.
4. Ears open! Listen and follow directions quickly.

Violations of classroom rules will result in the following disciplinary actions:


1st Consequence: Verbal Warning
2nd Consequence: Conference with student
3rd Consequence: Parental contact (Notes sent home and/or phone call)
4th Consequence: Team conference with student
5th Consequence: Team conference with parent/guardian
6th Consequence: Office referral

ISSUING OF PASSES
Students are not allowed to leave the classroom during the first or last fifteen (15) minutes
of class unless it is an emergency. Students needing to leave the classroom will be issued a signed
pass from the teacher. However, abuse of privilege or excessive requests may be denied. Please notify
the School Health Counselor if your child has any health issues to avoid being denied a pass when
needed.

• Restroom Policy
There will be a restroom pass system in place. Each student will receive an index card at the
beginning of the school year to monitor his/her restroom usage. Every student will be allowed
to use the restrooms only three times per quarter. Failure to comply with classroom rules will
result in a loss of restroom privileges. Medical conditions will be considered as an exception.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS
When a student does not complete an assignment in class, that assignment will be given as homework.
A student will be given 3 chances to turn in assignments. Any assignments turned in before the 3rd
notice will be given half of the original credit for the assignment. For example, if an assignment is
worth 10 points, it will only be worth 5 points after the due date up to the 3rd notice. Any assignments
turned in after the 3rd notice will receive ¼ of the original grade. Parents and/or guardian, please
remind your child to submit all assignments on time. Your child will be instructed to call you
whenever an assignment is late.

MAKE-UP WORK
Students on suspension, excused, or unexcused absences will be afforded the opportunity to make up
work. The student will generally be allowed an amount of days equal to the number of absences to turn
in any work that was assigned while absent. However, it is the responsibility of the student to request
make-up work from the teacher.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
1. Regular attendance in this class is vital. All absences, whether excused or unexcused, will
prevent you (students) from fully participating or benefiting from discussions and activities that
take place during class and may negatively affect your grade.
2. Absences, whether excused or unexcused, do not exempt you from any assignments or
deadlines. Students must make-up all assignments, regardless of absences.
3. Please refer to the student handbook/UMS website regarding attendance policy.
o Tardy: When the student is late to class less than 10 minutes
o Absence: When the student is late 10 minutes or more
o Limit on Parent Notes (Maximum of 6 per school year)
o Students who accumulate 12 or more unexcused absences at any time during the
school year will be referred to the Attendance Officer for referral to Family Court
for habitual truancy. (Section 6402.Habitual Truant – GCA)

CELL PHONE POLICY


All cell phones must be put away and out of use at all times during class time unless it is being
used as part of the academic instruction. Cell phones shall be turned off during any school crisis, drill,
or disaster. Cell phones shall not be used to take pictures of students and/or school personnel unless
authorized by a school administrator/teacher. Violation of cell phone use may result in the loss of
privilege of any cell phone use on school campus. For more information regarding cell phones, please
refer to the Board Policy 406 on your student handbook.
