In this lesson…
Overview Students will review their understanding of the prefixes mis-, non-, un-, and dis-.
3.4.b: ​The student will apply knowledge of roots, affixes, synonyms, and
Standards of antonyms.
Learning 3.4.g (for alphabetization): ​The student will use word reference resources
including the glossary, dictionary, and thesaurus.
● How do the prefixes mis-, non-, un-, and dis- change the meaning of a
word?
Essential Questions ● What words use the prefixes mis-, non-, un-, and dis-?
● What words start with mis-, non-, un-, or dis-, but do ​not ​use prefixes?
Students will be able to…
● Identify words that use the prefixes mis-, non-, un-, and dis-;
● Understand how each prefix changes the meaning of a word;
Objectives ● Identify what words are outliers (words that start with the letters mis-,
non-, un-, or dis-, not as prefixes. For example: mission, none, unicorn,
distant).
I can use what I know about the prefixes mis-, non-, un-, and dis- to

● An understanding of how the prefixes mis-, non-, un-, and dis- change the
meaning of roots they are attached to. For example: “misread” means to

Knowledge ● The ability to recognize and differentiate between words that use those
prefixes and words that do not. For example: “mission” starts with Mis-,
but it does not use the Mis- prefix.
Materials Prefix Review Worksheet
The whole class will work with the teacher to complete a matching activity.
Introduction/Hook Students will move words into one of five categories: Un- prefix words, Non-
prefix words, Mis- prefix words, Dis- prefix words, or Outliers.
Students will be given the ​Prefix Review Worksheet ​included above. As
Instructional instructed on the worksheet, the students will will write down 5 words that use
Activities & each prefix and alphabetize them, and 5 outlier words and alphabetize them.
Strategies Students are allowed to use the classroom dictionaries for this assignment to help
them find and alphabetize these words.
Students will be asked to name one of the words they used for each category to

● Mis-: ​A prefix that means “wrong” or “incorrect”

The ​Prefix Review Worksheet ​should be collected and graded based on the
Assessments examples in each category and on alphabetization.
*Note: The alphabetization part of this activity was included to help Mr.
Accommodations Hinson’s students practice their alphabetization skills, because much of the
class struggles with alphabetizing words.
