Civil Engineering Quiz 2013

This is Civil Engineering. Are you up for the challenge?

OBJECTIVES

In line with the 22nd Founding Anniversary of the Technological University of the
Philippines – Civil Engineering Society (TUPCES), a Civil Engineering Quiz is to be
conducted with the hope of achieving the following:

 To identify and recognize students with inherent skills and talents specifically in
the field of Civil Engineering; and
 To propose a venue for effective intellectual as well as social interaction among
civil engineering students.

ELIGIBILITY OF CONTESTANTS

1. Participants must be bona fide member of the TUPCES.


2. Irregular students can join provided that they are to compete with their respective
batch mates.

REGISTRATION FORMS

1. Registration forms are available at the TUPCES Office (2nd floor ESEP Building).
2. There must be at least 3 participants per section.

SCHEDULE

1. Registration shall end on July 19, Friday.


2. The qualifying exam shall be conducted on July 26, 2013 at the ESEP Bldg. from
1:00 – 5:00 PM.
3. Qualifiers shall compete in the Final Round on August 23, 2013 at the IRTC
Conference Hall from 8:00 AM – 12:00 NN.

QUIZ GENERAL MECHANICS

The Contest is divided into three categories – Intermediate, Junior and Senior level.
First year students shall compete under the Intermediate Level, Second year and Third
year students for the Junior level category and Fourth year and Fifth year students for
the Senior level category.
Elimination Round

1. The quiz shall be composed of the qualifying written exam.


2. The written examination shall be composed of twenty (20) questions and shall
be taken for 1 hour and 30 minutes.
3. The top ten (10) participants from the junior and senior level shall proceed to
the final round.
4. The top ten (10) participants from the intermediate level shall be declared the
winner.

FINAL ROUND

1. The contest will be a quiz-bee type of contest open to an audience.


2. Each participant will start from scratch or zero points.
3. The contest is divided into three (3) phases: the Easy, Moderate, and Difficult
Phases.
4. The Easy and Moderate phases shall be held on August 23, 2013 at the IRTC
Conference Hall from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm while the Difficult Phase shall be
held from 2:00 – 3:00 pm at the General Assembly.
5. The Easy Phase will be composed of 10 Questions; the Moderate Phase will
be composed of 10 Questions; and the Difficult Phase will be composed of 5
Questions.
6. In between phases, there will be a two-minute lull.
7. At the end of the contest, the participant with the highest cumulative score will
be declared the Champion. The next two highest scoring participants will be
declared First and Second Runner ups, respectively.

READING MECHANICS

1. Questions in any given phase may be objective or problem solving type with their
corresponding time limit.
2. Each question will be read twice after which no repetition of the same will be
done.
3. On the first reading the participants may already start answering.
4. The time starts at the end of the second reading.

ANSWERING MECHANICS

1. Each participant will be provided with official answer boards.


2. Answers must be printed legibly on the answer board.
3. Only complete answers will merit full credit. Incomplete answers shall be
considered wrong answers.
4. For numerical answers, proper rules on rounding off must be observed.

SCORING MECHANICS

1. The quiz contest will follow a point system of scoring.


2. Points shall be awarded as follows:

PROTEST MECHANICS

1. A protest may be raised by any participant.


2. All protests shall be forwarded to the judges for decision.
3. During the protest, the participant has the privilege of consulting any reference,
provided they are relevant to the subject of the protest.
4. The Board of Judges shall be given a maximum of two (2) minutes to resolve the
protest after which the contest shall go on. Should the judges fail to resolve the
protest within the allotted time, the said question shall be held in abeyance until
the same has been resolved.
5. Protests regarding a particular question will be entertained only before the next
question is read. Once the next question is read, no protest regarding the
previous question will be entertained.

TIE BREAKING MECHANICS

1. In case of a tie at the end of the last phase of this contest, a tie breaker will
immediately ensue and will be sudden death in nature.
2. Questions of any difficulty and type will be asked until a participant gains an
advantage in score over the other.
3. The first participant to gain an advantage in score will be declared the victor of
the tie and will merit the corresponding award.
4. Scores for each question shall follow that of the difficulty of the question.
C.IMPORTANT NOTES

1. Each contestant is allowed to bring his/her own scientific calculator(s) provided


they are submitted to the Quiz Contest Committee for inspection. Note: All
memory in the calculator will be cleared.
2. No reference materials may be used except that which will be provided by the
Quiz Contest Committee.
3. On Rounding-off, the computer way of round-off will be used.
4. No rounding-off is allowed in between calculations.

D.BOARD OF JUDGES

1. The Board of Judges shall be composed of three (3) members from CE Quiz
team and the faculty of the Department of Civil Engineering of TUP - Manila.
2. The Board of Judges will act on any concern regarding the questions and
answers ONLY.
3. The decision of the Board of Judges shall be final and executory.

E.COVERAGE

For the Intermediate Level, questions related to Mathematics shall be asked


while for the Junior Level, questions related Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and
Engineering Drawing shall be asked. Meanwhile, the Senior level questions are related
to Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Drawing, Surveying, Mechanics of
Rigid Bodies, Mechanics of Deformable Bodies, Soil Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics and
Hydraulics.

F.PRIZES

1. Certificates shall be presented to each participant.


2. The winners shall receive a certificate and cash.

G.OTHER MATTERS

All other matters not taken up in the above-mentioned Rules and Regulations
shall be referred to the Quiz Contest Committee. The decision of the committee on
these matters shall be final and executory. For further inquiries please feel free to
