retell and dictate stories from books and
experience to act out stories in dramatic
play; and to predict what will happen next
in a story and 8.2.1 Develops growing strength, dexterity,
and control needed to use tools such as

Materials Needed ● scissors

● glue sticks
● index cards
● writing pencils
● envelopes
● cereal boxes
Set Up and Prepare
Make color copies of the page toward the middle of the book, that
features a deer, alligator, and bear being carried away by rabbits. If you
don't have a color copier available, try scanning it on your computer and
printing it out with colored ink. You will need one copy per student. On
the index cards, write "first," "second," and "third," creating enough
cards for each student to have their own set.

Directions Students should use their glue stick to paste their copy onto a piece of
cardboard taken from the side of a cereal box. This will act as a backing
to give the copy some stability. Next, students can use their scissors to
cut the picture into three parts, with cuts between the deer and alligator
and the alligator and bear. Using the pencils, students should write their
name on an envelope, and on the back of each piece of their picture.

After passing out the sets of index cards, have students write their name
on the backs, and review what the cards say. Ask them to line up their
pictures in the same order that they appear in the book. Have them place
their index cards beneath the appropriate picture to label the first,
second, and third animal.

Try rearranging the order of the animals, asking students to put the
alligator first, the bear second, and the deer third. They can then label
them with their index cards. Once they've tried rearranging them a few
times, students should store all of the pieces in their envelope and share
them with someone at home.
