Study the article below and answer the questions that follow.

Exercise for 7 Minutes to Overcome Depression

Think exercise is something you don’t have time for? Think again. Check out this 7-minute workout
from The New York Times. That’s a workout any of us can fit into our schedules.

Exercise has such a profound effect on our happiness and well-being that is an effective strategy of
overcoming and curing depression. In a study cited in Shawn Achor’s book, The Happiness
Advantage, three groups of patients treated their depression with medication, exercise, or a
combination of the two.

The results of this study are surprising! Although all three groups experienced similar improvements
in their happiness levels early on, the follow up assessments proved to be radically different.

“The groups were tested six months later to assess their relapse rate. Of those who had taken the
medication alone, 38% had slipped back into depression. Those in the combination group were doing
only slightly better, with a 31% relapse rate. The biggest shock, though came from the exercise
group: Their relapse rate was only 9%.”

You don’t have to be depressed to benefit from the exercise, though. Exercise can help your relax,
increase your brain power, and even improve your body image, even if you don’t lose any weight.

We have explored exercise in depth before, and looked at what it does to our brains. It releases
proteins and endorphins that make us feel happier.

Question 26-31 are on the following passage.

1 Today, we see many up and coming sports stars. Current World Junior Men’s Doubles
Champion, Tan Boon Heong, has been hailed as a promising player of the new badminton era
following his superb performances with Koo Kien Keat. Boon Heong was born on September
18, 1987 in Alor Setar, kedah. He is the youngest in the family and lives with his father, mother
and sister. 5
2 His mother says “He was a terrible naughty child and very mischievious, like a monkey.”
He had problems in school as he often played truant. He skipped school to play ping pong with
his friends. When Boon Heong was a child, he did not have any interest in studying. However,
he enjoyed playing badminton and ping pong. He began to spend all of his spare time at the
badminton court next to his house playing badminton. 10
3 When he was 10 years old, he told his family that one day he would play badminton in a
sports reality TV show. At that time, the whole family laughed at him and never believed he
would make it. One day, a coach stopped to watch him and discovered that Boon Heong had
great talent. The coach convinced Boon Heong’s father that his son could be a successful player
if he received proper coaching. Unfortunately, the family could not afford a coach for him to 15
learn badminton even though it would only cost RM25 a month.
4 Finally, coach Low Kien Zhong agreed to teach the talented boy for free. Boon Heong
feels he owes the coach a debt of kindness for the free coaching. When Boon Heong was fifteen
years old, his father sent him to study at a school in Selangor on the advice of the coach. At the
age of sixteen, he was offered a chance to attend the Bukit Jalil Sports School. The 180 cm-tall 20
left-handed player was on his way to becoming a national player.
5 Now he has proven himself to his family and made his dream come true in just 10 years.
Together with Khoo Kien Keat, he has won the men’s doubles titles in six tournaments,
including the All-England, by beating higher-ranked pairs and outclassing experienced
opponents. He is outstanding with his exciting attacking style of play. 25
6 Former top pairs had one major specialty in their game but Boon Heong boasts an all-
round strength. However, in a competition, to rely on physical strength is not enough. Boon
Heong knows it is important to sustain one’s mental strength as well. To perform well and get
excellent results in international tournaments, Boon Heong has to undergo many hours of
training. Every day, except Sundays, he is required to practise his badminton skills from 8.00 30
a.m to 11.00 a.m and then again from 3.00 p.m to 6.00 p.m.
