Reflection Paper

This semester, my class was given 13 objectives/ goals to complete by the end of the semester.

These goals varied from were designed to fulfill the two course objectives. These objectives

include, “Be able to discuss issues surrounding computers, software and the use of technology in

the classroom” and “Demonstrate your ability to use computer applications for productivity, data

analysis, and problem solving.” There are three objectives in specific that I’d like to focus on.

Creating a web page, approaching new computer tasked with confidence, and social and ethical

issues using technology in education.

In the course syllabus, objective 11 states,” create a web-based personal portfolio showcasing

learning over the semester.” Creating a web page was a new experience for me. We used a

website called Weebly to create a free website to showcase all of the work in which we

completed in class. This assignment was mostly done out of class making it much more difficult

to figure out for ourselves. I thought that this project was extremely creative of the instructor to

give but made me a little uncomfortable to have to publish it onto the web. We learned that the

posts on the Internet don’t just go away! My only wish for the assignment would be that we

didn’t have to post it onto the actual web and could find some kind of loophole around that.

The next goal I am going to focus on is objective 1. “Approach new computer-based tasks more

easily and with greater confidence.” One of the hardest things about this class is the fact that I

have a Mac laptop. Some assignments such as publisher were required with no class time to do

it. With work and school, this made it extremely difficult being homework usually has to squeeze

into random hours of the night. It was definitely harder to take this class when many of the

functions one would usually find in one place are located in other places on the mac. Many times

I would have to go ask the instructor for help using the mac. Now I am a lot more aware of

where Mac functions are and am more comfortable when using my own laptop. I would say this

is the biggest piece of knowledge I gained from this class.

The last objective I’d like to discuss is number nine. “Analyze and discuss social and ethical

issues related to the increased use of technology in education, business, and society.” In class, we

discussed technology in our world today. It is practically essential for one to know the basics

around a computer in order to be successful in any type of job. Our society is so technologically

based that without knowledge of how to use it, you’re highly likely to fail. My main focus was

technology in the classroom. Since technology is always changing and advancing, it can

sometimes be difficult for us to keep people trained on the necessary knowledge to work a

computer. Computer skills are an important thing to have in any kind of future career one might

have.

Although much of this class came easy to me because of prior knowledge, I am grateful for

having taken it. It is important for students to learn new technologies while they are advancing.

This way we can implement them into our everyday lives and even in our current or future

careers.
