Software
Software is often divided into two categories
• System Software: includes OS and all the
utilities that enable the computer to
function.
• Application Software: includes programs
that do real work for users. e.g. Word
processors, spreadsheets and DBMS.

Operating System (OS)
OS are the most important programs that run on a
computer.
• are the basic building blocks of any computer
system that enables the smooth operation of the
hardware.
• act as an interface between the user and the
hardware and is responsible for the
overall functioning of any computer system
• e.g. Microsoft Windows, Linux, DOS, Xenix, Mac OS,
Unix
Utilities
• program that performs a very specific task usually
related to managing system resources
• used to manage disk drives, printers and other
devices attached to the system
• are small and less complex program ranging from
Antivirus to compression utilities

Word Prosessor
• A word processor is an electronic device or computer software
application, that performs the task of composing, editing, formatting,
and printing of documents.
Features in word processors
• Collaborative editing, allowing multiple users to work on the same
document.
• Indexing assistance. (True indexing, as performed by a professional human
indexer, is far beyond current technology, for the same reasons that fully
automated, literary-quality machine translation is.)
• Creation of tables of contents.
• Management, editing, and positioning of visual material (illustrations,
diagrams), and sometimes sound files.
• Automatically managed (updated) cross-references to pages or notes.
• Version control of a document, permitting reconstruction of its evolution.
• Non-printing comments and annotations.
• Generation of document statistics (characters, words, readability level, time
spent editing by each user).
• "Styles", which automate consistent formatting of text body, titles, subtitles,
highlighted text, and so on.

Contoh Fungsi Program Aplikasi

1. Microsoft Word, program aplikasi ini memiliki fungsi untuk menulis
atau mengetik tugas, makalah dan lain sebagainya.
2. Microsoft Excel. program aplikasi ini memiliki fungsi untuk membuat
tabel data atau spreadsheets. program ini akan sangat membantu
kamu dalam membuat tabel pengeluaran keuangan dan juga program
ini memiliki perintah otomatis atau rumus yang bisa memudahkan
kamu dalam menghitung jumlah, rata rata dan sebagainya.
3. Microsoft Power Point. program aplikasi ini memiliki fungsi untuk
membuat slide show untuk persentasi atau rapat dan juga untuk
halaman web.
4. Notepad. program aplikasi ini memiliki fungsi sebagai tempat untuk
menyimpan catatan.
5. Mozilla Firefox dan Google Chrome. 2 program aplikasi ini adalah
peramban web, yang berfungsi untuk menjelajahi internet.
6. Windows Movie Maker. Program aplikasi ini mempunyai fungsi untuk
membuat atau mengedit video.

Contoh Fungsi Program Aplikasi

1. Adobe Photoshop. Adobe photoshop adalah program grafis yang bisa
digunakan untuk mengedit gambar.
2. Paint. Program ini bisa dipakai juga untuk mengedit gambar atau bahkan
dijadikan sebagai kanvas atau tempat untuk melukis.
3. Winamp. Program winamp ini berfungsi untuk memutar musik atau
video.
4. Windows Media Player. Program ini berfungsi untuk memutar video dan
bisa juga untuk memutar musik.
5. Smadav dan AVG Antivirus. Program ini berfungsi untuk mencegah
masuknya virus ke dalam komputer dan juga bisa untuk menghapus virus
dari komputer.
6. Remote Dekstop Connection. program aplikasi ini berfungsi untuk
terkoneksi dengan komputer yang berada dimanapun dan bisa untuk
mengakses file.
7. Sound Recorder. program ini memiliki fungsi untuk merekam suara.
8. Connect To a Projector. Program ini memiliki fungsi untuk
mengkoneksikan komputer kamu ke proyektor melalui sarana kabel.
9. Yahoo Messenger. program ini memiliki fungsi untuk melakukan aktifitas
chatting dan panggilan video secara gratis.
