DEAR SIR/MADAM NURSE RECRUITER,

I am writing to express my desire to be accepted into the perioperative program as a new graduate at Banner
University Medical Center. I will graduate from the University of Arizona College Nursing and Honors program
in May 2019 with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and I plan on taking my NCLEX exam in the summer of
2019 to be a registered nurse in the state of Arizona. I learned about this position through my perioperative new
nurse experience for my senior preceptorship. During my undergraduate program, I have accumulated 588
hours of perioperative experience between the VALOR preceptorship at Southern Arizona VA Healthcare
System and my senior preceptorship at Banner University Medical Center, and I believe I am well-suited for the
program.

Throughout the two preceptorships I have become proficient in maintaining and working in sterile fields,
positioning patients safely for procedures, managing patients pre- and post-operations, and understanding the
scope of practice of a peri-operative nurse in pre-operative units, the operating room, and post-operative units.
The most valuable lessons I learned were to provide quality care in perioperative environments, advocate for
the patient, and support the patient during his or her most vulnerable time. During my preceptorships, I learned
one of the most important roles as a perioperative nurse is to be a patient advocate. The patients are on some
spectrum of sedation before, during, and after surgical procedures, and it is the nurse’s duty to ensure the
patient’s safety. In the operating room, patient advocacy includes the patient’s operating position, effective
communication between colleagues and a safe patient environment.

As a new graduate, I will bring my eagerness and desire to learn more as a nurse. I am comfortable in the peri-
operative environment, but I still have much to learn. I am looking forward to transitioning my skills into the
clinical setting as a registered nurse. As a new nurse, I would like to improve my communication with
interprofessional colleagues. Nursing is more than a profession- it has become part of who I am. I have a
passion for serving others and building professional relationships with coworkers and patients. I understand the
nursing profession can be exhausting, but during nursing school I developed skills to decrease nurse burnout
through daily exercise and meditating. I am a firm believer in team-work and if I were to be hired to the
perioperative program, I will strive for superior patient care.

I would appreciate the opportunity to be part of the Banner University Medical Center perioperative team.
Thank you in advance for your consideration of my application. If you have further questions I can be reached
via my email: leahgawin@email.arizona.edu, telephone: 623-565-1539, or my online portfolio:

Sincerely.
