Pedagogy
The activity will begin by the teacher putting up a review activity onto the
SmartBoard from a previous lesson. Once the students have practiced
their review, they will move into their direct instruction. The teacher will
start with the definitions, showing what estimation and rounding are and
giving some examples that will be already up on the screen. From there,
they will help the teacher in coming up with numbers to round. That will
lead into the next page where the teacher will take them through three
steps to solving a problem to find the estimated answer using rounding.
From there, the students will be lead into a visual of rounding numbers
based on looking at a timeline to determine whether they should be
rounding up or down. Once they have been lead through some examples
with the teacher, they will be instructed to do so on their own with a few
examples presented. The students will then get to have a few group
practice problems. The teacher will pick one student to come up to hit the
random number generator for each. Once the number has been
generated, the student will then have to round to estimate the sum of the
problem. Several students will get an opportunity to come up and do this
with the help of their classmates. The teacher will then change the screen
to six problems that they will use rounding to estimate the sum and then
check their answers. Once they have time to try what they learned and
the majority of them have completed the work, the teacher will call upon
students to go through the process on the SmartBoard where the answers

will be checked by the teacher and the students, help being provided by
the teacher where necessary.
