Importance of
Training Your Puppy
Training your dog is an important part in
building a strong relationship between
man and man’s best friend. Most dog
breeds welcome training, as it provides
them with mental challenges that help
them work off energy.
Dogs, in many ways, are a lot like tod-
dler; they are full of energy and are al-
ways ready to learn
One important not before you jump in, is
that training works for dogs of all ages.
Old or young, they will learn.
Toilet Training
Be patient! Depending on the size and
breed of your puppy, it can take any-
where between 4-6 months to properly
teach your puppy where his toilet is. The
ideal age to start training your pup, is 12
to 16 weeks old. Coincidentally, this is
also the age that puppies are weened off
their mother’s milk and can be intro-
duced to puppy chow.
Boundary Setting
Boundary setting is important, whether
your dog will be an outdoor dog or an
indoor dog. The most important tip here,
is to claim your space. As always you
must remember: you’re the boss. Your
space belongs to you whereas your dog
has his own space. This is important if
you want to keep furniture clean with
your indoor dog, and your patio space
tidy with your outdoor dog. Remember
to be consistent with your discipline. I
simple rolled up paper to the nose will do
the trick most times, as will a spray bot-
tle of water. Please remember to respect
your dog, and do not “punish” your furry
friend when it is not warranted.
Tricks, Playtime
When getting a new dog, don't forget
playtime! Playtime can be going outside
and throwing a ball around, playing tug
-of-war, or even teaching your dog
some new tricks. Playtime has many
benefits. Playtime allows you to create a
bond between you and your new pet.
You can also use playtime to instill obe-
dience. Play time should be 30 minutes
to an hour every day. Play time can be
fun for both you and your new pet!
Warnings!
When having a new pet, you should
make sure to puppy-proof everything.
Make sure there are no hazardous,
small items lying around that can hurt
them. Make sure to feed them only dog
appropriate foods. No chocolate, no
candy, avocados, grapes, caffeine, etc. It
is important to potty train your dog, so
that he/she does not leave a mess all
over your home (especially in carpet
areas). Also be careful with allowing
your pets on the couch or bedroom
where there are pillows. Dogs tend to
chew and scratch these items. One last
warning, you're new dog may turn into
your new best friend!
