E-Portfolio Reflective essay

“Language and writing are resources people use to do things, be things, and make things in the
world.” What does this mean? Language and writing resources are the Intermediaries of the
everyday decisions people make. They are fundamental skills that are tied to achieving not just
major world-changing goals but even the simplest of everyday tasks.

Language and writing resources have been applied in my English class as the main skills that are
needed to progress well in the class and advance your writing to the next level. These resources
were required to complete 100% of the assignments which included essays, artifact analysis, and
just writing in general. They also allow you to give your words different meanings and emotions
based on how you utilize the language and the style of writing you use.

A specific example of how I utilized language and writing resources in my work would be from
my self-study project where I used the line “I later then decided to add many points in which the
reader could relate to. A relative point I added, “With this faith, we will be able to work together,
to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together,
knowing that we will be free one day.” With the help of the writing resources, I was able to
create a sentence that would connect with my audience in a personal way. I was able to create
emotion from just words.

Another example of how I utilized language and writing resources in my work would be from
my “Meme Series” project. With the help of language and writing resources, I was able to
explain my research process in my own words while still keeping high credibility due to the
citation writing resources I had. This was utilized well with this sentence, “So while I was
browsing the web for an event that would fit these criteria, I stumbled upon anarticle called
‘Nation’s First e-cigarette ban proposal in San Francisco’ published and written by CBS NEWS.
The article stated that: ‘Two San Francisco officials introduced legislation Tuesday article
that would ban the sale of e-cigarettes in the city.’ (CBS/ap)”

“Rhetoric provides a method for studying the work that language and writing do.” what does this
mean? This means that Rhetoric investigates how language is used to organize and maintain
social groups, construct meanings and identities, coordinate behavior, mediate power, produce
change, and create knowledge.

We used this concept to further analyze and research our writing and sources in our English
class. It allowed us to get deeper more satisfying information that we greatly benefited from as
writers.

I used this concept in my self-study project one by going back and reviewing the artifact source
and digging into the deeper meanings the author hid in her rhetorical uses. For example, take this
sentence for example, “I did this by saying, “His speech not only strongly pressured the signing
of the civil right act of 1964 aside from the 1900’s. I then game my audience a view on how this
speech is relevant today by including, “It has encouraged the people of today to stand up for the
rights they believe are theirs.” to figure out that the speech encouraged the people of today had to
do a deep rhetorical analysis.

I used this concept in my “Meme Series” project by using rhetorics to conduct a various amount
of research and dig into each source to find hidden meaning and truly get a excellent
understanding of the research I did. Rhetoric also helped me create memes and be able to break
down one image into several paragraphs of analysis. For example, “ The purpose of the meme or
the way it's supposed to be received is that an alien arrives at earth and at this point, the first sign
of human existence that he sees is a Juul. The aliens curious look is to deeply resemble what
every teen probably look like when they are about to try something life-changing for the first
time. So the alien picks up the Juul and takes his first “hit” the reaction to the first “hit” is
portrayed by the text bubble on the top of his head.” This is a small passage of the analysis i
made of a simple meme I made that had less than 30 words.

When it comes to both of these concepts i use them on a daily basis. Whether it be writing a text
to a friend to make plans I use language and writing resources to come up with convincing
phrases to guarantee approval or reading an article where i use Rhetorics to dig deeper than
people usually would to get the juicy meaning behind the simple words.
