Dayaw Episode 3: “Inukit, Hinulma, Nilikha”

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. Bulul as an abstract art.
ii. Different patterns of Okir shown in video.
iii. The different position of Bululs. The meanings about it.

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought Bulul is

something I usually as souvenir from people who went Bengguet long with
other wooden carved things. That time I don’t know about how Ifugao value
a Bulul,
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think that The Bul-
ul or Bulol is an Ifugao anthropomorphic carving that symbolizes an Ifugao rice
god or guardian spirits. It also signifies fertility and is sometimes believed to
house spirits of ancestors. A Bulul has a simplified shape of a human being,
whether male or female. It consists of a simplified head, a torso, and a pair of
hands and legs mounted on a platform for stability. It is carved out of strong
Narra or sometimes stone. Sizes also vary, depending on its use. Bululs are
usually made in pairs, a male and a female, but some are done individually.
ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought
Okir is a design I usually see in wooden carvings like tables, wooden chairs and
sometimes in paintings. That time I know tnat design, but I don’t know that it is
called as Okir and originate from Maranao. However, reading the
article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize that Okir is a design or
pattern often rendered or curved in hardwood, brass, silver and wall painting
in curvilinear lines and Arabic geometric figures. It is an exclusive artistic cultural
heritage of the Maranaos of Lanao, Philippines. The Maranaos are proud to
preserve their cultural heritage by way of keeping their artifacts permanently
located in their households.
iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson I have a vague knowledge
of Sarimanok, I know that it is a lengedary bird in Maranao with beautiful and
colorful feathers.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize It is
the legendary bird that has become a ubiquitous symbol of Maranao art. It is
depicted as a fowl with colorful wings and feathered tail, holding a fish on its
beak or talons. The head is profusely decorated with scroll, leaf, and spiral
motifs. It is said to be a symbol of good fortune. The Far Eastern University seal
bears the FEU Coat of Arms and the sarimanok motif. The ABS CBN network
used it as one of their station logo, and the Mindanao State University.

Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?
i. Is it better to make two bululs, one male and one female or just one male
bulul?
ii. How Ifugao became successful to pass this belief about bulul to the
generations until now?
iii. What made Maranao successfully preserve their Okir?
