From the moment a child is born, his or her education begins. At first,
education is an informal process in which an infant watches others and imitates
them. As the infant grows into a young child, the process of education becomes
more formal through play dates and preschool. Once in grade school, academic
lessons become the focus of education as a child moves through the school
system. But even then, education is about much more than the simple learning
of facts.

Students learn a common knowledge base, a common culture, and a common
sense of society’s official priorities, and perhaps more importantly, they learn to
locate their place within it. They are provided with a unifying framework for
participation in institutional life and at the same time are sorted into different
paths. Those who demonstrate facility within the standards established by
curriculum or through the informal patterns of status differentiation in student
social life are set on trajectories to high-status positions in society. Those who
do less well are gradually confined to lower, subordinate positions in society.
Within the norms established by school curriculum and teaching pedagogies,
students learn from a very early age to identify their place as A, B, C, etc. level
vis-à-vis their classmates. In this way, schools are profound agencies of
normalization.
1. Socialization:
The most important function of education is socialization. The people
have no knowledge about the culture of their society. They must learn them and
they must learn the way which their society is functioning. Hence, the children
as they grow up must be introduced into the culture which they are going to
face.

2. Development of Personality:
Education plays an important role in the development of personality. The
object of education, as said Durkheim “is to awaken and develop in the child
those physical, intellectual and moral states which are required of him both by
his society as a whole and by the milieu for which he is specially designed”.
Education helps the development of the qualities of an individual, such as
physical, mental and emotional make-up as well as his temperament and
character.
3. Social Control:
Education plays a vital role in regulating individual behavior through
transmitting a way of life and communicating ideas and values to the new
generations.
One way that education contributes to the regulations of social
conduct, says Bottomore, “is in the early socialization of the child”. In order to
transmit its social heritage and survive as a social order all societies develop
educational systems to train its younger generations. The young must be
consciously trained for their adult roles to maintain the society. Through the
process of education society regulates the behavior of its members and
enforces conformity to its norms.
“Education in a broad sense”, as says Bottomore, “From infancy to
adulthood, is thus a vital means of social control”. Formal education in modern
societies communicate ideas and values which play a part in regulating
behavior. The new generations are instructed to observe the social norms, the
violation of which may invite punishment.
4. Social Integration:
Education, by imparting values, also integrates people into the broader
society. The curriculum of the school, its ‘extra-curricular’ activities and the
informal relationship among students and teachers communicate certain values
and social skills such as cooperation or team-spirit, obedience, fair play.

5. Determination of Status:
Determination of status of an individual is an important function of
education. Amount of education is a good indicator of socio-economic status,
from lower working class to upper class, education leads to economic
opportunity. It is through education young people secure higher status jobs than
their parents. With higher incomes they come to associate with the persons of
higher status. Thus, education provides the channel to better socio-economic
status.
EDUCATION AS DIRECTION
The natural or native impulses of the young do not agree with the life-
customs of the group into which they are born. Consequently, they have to be
directed or guided. This control is not the same thing as physical compulsion; it
consists in centering the impulses acting at any one time upon some specific
end and in introducing an order of continuity into the sequence of acts. The
action of others is always influenced by deciding what stimuli shall call out their
actions. But in some cases as in commands, prohibitions, approvals, and
disapprovals, the stimuli proceed from persons with a direct view to influencing
action. Since in such cases we are most conscious of controlling the action of
others, we are likely to exaggerate the importance of this sort of control at the

expense of a more permanent and effective method. The basic control resides
in the nature of the situations in which the young take part. In social situations
the young have to refer their way of acting to what others are doing and make
it fit in. This directs their action to a common result, and gives an understanding
common to the participants. For all mean the same thing, even when performing
different acts. This common understanding of the means and ends of action is
the essence of social control. It is indirect, or emotional and intellectual, not
direct or personal. Moreover, it is intrinsic to the disposition of the person, not
external and coercive. To achieve this internal control through identity of
interest and understanding is the business of education. While books and
conversation can do much, these agencies are usually relied upon too
exclusively. Schools require for their full efficiency more opportunity for conjoint
activities in which those instructed take part, so that they may acquire a social
sense of their own powers and of the materials and appliances used.
EDUCATION AS GROWTH
Power to grow depends upon need for others and plasticity. Both of
these conditions are at their height in childhood and youth. Plasticity or the
power to learn from experience means the formation of habits. Habits give
control over the environment, power to utilize it for human purposes. Habits
take the form both of habituation, or a general and persistent balance of organic
activities with the surroundings, and of active capacities to readjust activity to
meet new conditions. The former furnishes the background of growth; the latter
constitute growing. Active habits involve thought, invention, and initiative in
applying capacities to new aims. They are opposed to routine which marks an
arrest of growth. Since growth is the characteristic of life, education is all one
with growing; it has no end beyond itself. The criterion of the value of school
education is the extent in which it creates a desire for continued growth and
supplies means for making the desire effective in fact.

EDUCATION AS FORMATION
The same principle of criticism applies to theories which find the primary
subject matter of study in the cultural products—especially the literary
products—of man's history. Isolated from their connection with the present
environment in which individuals have to act, they become a kind of rival and
distracting environment. Their value lies in their use to increase the meaning of
the things with which we have actively to do at the present time. The idea of
education advanced in these chapters is formally summed up in the idea of
continuous reconstruction of experience, an idea which is marked off from
education as preparation for a remote future, as unfolding, as external
formation, and as recapitulation of the past.
