I) Background
The customer has a plant Reverse Osmosis of Seawater, in an arrangement 8X7M Membranes
in each tubal module.
The equipment has Three primary filters and 56 Membranes of 400 ft2 and 8x40 "from TFC
This is to Clean the fouling Membranes Organic and inorganic of its surface, with the use of
generic and specialized chemicals
The Preventive Chemical cleaning criterion:
 Drop in normalized permeate flow from 10 to 15%

 Increase in pressure drop by 10 to 15% module
 Increase of the passage of salts of 25%
Another consideration in sea water equipment of open outlet:
1. High Colloidal load content

2. High content of organic pollutants
3. Income of any contaminants of the coastal beaches
4. Microbiological Growth
5. Entry of metals such as iron

1. Pre Rinse
With the help of the tank and CIP pump rinse The Membranes Until the Conductivity
Mark less than 1500 uS/cm.
Note This water must be chlorine-free, the cartridge filters must also have been changed
2. Alkaline Cleaning WITH SODIUM HYDROXIDE
Fill the CIP tank With Water Chlorine-Free (if chlorine is available for every 1 ppm
Dissolve 10 gr of bisulfite and add it to the tank) with Temperature Between 35 and 40
o
C and recirculate it through the membranes from feeding to rejection To verify that no
exist leaks, for 5 minutes.
if not being able to heat the water to more than 30 oC (no problem we just have to give
it a little more time)
Add to cleaning tank (The tank is a Level of 70%), the amount of 5 Kg. of Soda caustic at
50%, it must be recirculated and the return water to the CIP tank must be Remove
(Strong turbidity and reddish brown coloration will be observed)
Replace the lost water level.
Repeat the operation (But in Closed loop) Once More Using the additional 10 kg of
Caustic Soda, and keep in recirculating for about 30 to 60 minutes.
The soda should be added to 2 kg every 5 minutes, to complete the 10 kg, checking that
the pH value should be between 10 to 12, we should not exceed 12.5 as we could fatigue
the membrane.
Remove the entire solution if it has high turbidity and coloration.
Repeat the operation (but in Closed Loop) Once More using the additional 5 kg of Caustic
Soda, and keep in recirculating for about 30 to 60 minutes.
Soda should be added from 1kg every 5 minutes, to complete the 5 kg, checking that
the pH value should be between 10 to 12, we should not exceed more than 12.5 since
we could fatigue the membrane.
Remove the entire solution if it has high turbidity and coloration.
With the rejection Line Diverted, rinse with chlorine-free permeate water (if the Water
would have chlorine, add 10 grams of sodium Metabisulfite dissolved in water For every
m3 of water), for a period of 30 minutes and check the pH and conductivity at the outlet
of the water to the drain.
RESET THE OPERATION AND CHECK THE PARAMETERS FOR 24 HOURS
If the parameters of permeate flow, feed pressure and product conductivity have not
improved, it must be done after one week the cleaning with specialized products, as
follows:
3. ALKALINE CHEMICAL CLEANING WITH PYSCLEAN 0121L
Make the connection of the CIP and the change of cartridge filters, also check that the
water does not have chlorine.
Once the water has been recirculated and the non-leakage of water is evidence, it is
proceeded in closed loop to washing alkaline wash with Pysclean 0121L
USando 20 kg. of the PYSCLEAN 0121L Added to CIP Tank and recirculate it by 20 minutes
through the membranes returning the permeate and rejection to the CIP tank. This in
order to remove foul from the membranes and send them to the CIP tank
If the water becomes very dirty, it must be evacuated in its entirety and start again using
60 kg of the PYSCLEAN 0121L and recirculate it for 60 minutes to the CIP tank, then
evacuate the entire solution
After that time proceed to rinse it with chlorine free permeate until the pH drops to 9
4. ACID CLEANING WITH PYSCLEAN 0101L
Using 10 kg Of the PYSCLEAN 0101L added to the CIP tank and recirculated for 20
minutes through the membranes returning the permeate and rejection to the CIP tank.
This in order to remove dirt from the membranes and send them to the CIP tank
If the water becomes very dirty, it must be evacuated in its entirety and start again using
30 kg of the PYSCLEAN 0101L and recirculate it for 60 minutes to the CIP tank, then
evacuate the whole solution
After that time proceed to rinse it with chlorine free permeate until the pH rises to 5
5. SANITIZATION WITH THE PYSCIDE 3315
Acid Cleaning Completed Or in conjunction with acid cleaning, Must be added to the CIP
tank 4 Kg PYSCIDE 3315 and recirculate for 3 hours minimum, then rinse and operate
the equipment.
The first three hours of production should be discarded to avoid the presence of the
residual PYSCIDE in the permeated water.
This sanitation activity can be done followed by washing Chemical Or at the next stop.
