Approved January, 2013

SPED: Students with special needs will be paired with another student to complete the brochure. Students
will also be given a paper copy of research for the students to read and answer questions for their
brochure.

ENGAGEMENT:

The teacher will begin the lesson by showing students a slideshow of pictures of antique corded and
cordless telephones. The teacher will ask students if they know what it is and how it was used. The teacher
will ask students if they have ever used these types of phones. Then the teacher will explain that there are
many inventions that were patented from the late twentieth century through the twenty-first century.

Assessment: The teacher and students will complete a K-W-L chart on the board about the technological
advancements they already know about and what they want to learn about technological advancements.
EXPLORATION:

Using the website Nearpod, the teacher will guide students through a presentation containing a video
about inventions from the late twentieth century until the twenty-first century. The teacher will allow
students to watch the video and take jot notes detailing their learning. After the video, the teacher will bring
the students’ attention to the K-W-L chart on the white board. The teacher will ask the students if they
would like to add to their thinking. The teacher will add responses accordingly. Then the teacher will move
to the next slide in the Nearpod presentation and take students on a virtual field trip through the
Smithsonian Institute during their space exhibit. The teacher will allow students time to browse the exhibit
while taking note of what they are seeing. Then the teacher will ask again if there is any new learning they
want to add to their chart. The teacher will add responses accordingly. The teacher will move the students
through to the third slide on the Nearpod presentation and discuss the timeline shown to students. The
timeline shows inventions in the order in which they were made. Students will choose an invention to
research for their brochure project. Finally, the teacher will move to the last slide and allow students to
collaborate using the prompt. Students will respond to the question “What is your favorite invention that
you use today? If you could improve it, what would you add or take away from the product?” Once the
students have answered the question, they will respond to their peers thoughtfully and respectfully.

Assessment: K-W-L chart

EXPLANATION: The teacher will explain to students that technology has been changing and improving
tremendously over the course of 200 years. The teacher will read the section titled “Industry” in the book
Alabama: The Heart of Dixie written by John Hamilton. The teacher will tell students to look over the
timeline on the Nearpod presentation. The teacher will highlight some major inventions and technological
advancements that have happened since the late twentieth century through the twenty first century. The
teacher will facilitate a discussion about what life might be like without the technological advancements we
enjoy today.

Assessment: Questioning and Discussion

Approved January, 2013

ELABORATION:
The teacher will tell students that they are going to choose one product from the timeline to report on.
Students will report on the product’s history [who created it, when, where, why, how was it used/how is it
used today, how has it changed life for Alabamians] by creating a brochure through Google Classroom.
The teacher will show an example of the brochure and rubric for grading. The teacher will walk around
questioning students, prompting for further learning, and guiding students in the research and creation of
their brochure. The teacher will also remind students to write down all of the websites they find information
on, and review briefly copyright and fair use laws.

Assessment: Formative Observation and Questioning

EVALUATION:
The teacher will use a rubric to grade the brochures for a summative assessment. The brochure will be
graded on the history of the product, today’s uses, pictures of the product’s history, and website usage.
