To Whom It May Concern:

I consider it an honor and privilege to provide this letter of recommendation for Fabian Koehler,
currently a senior at Western High School. I was Fabian’s soccer coach at Western High School for the
2018 soccer season.

My first impression of Fabian came on a warm August morning in 2018 shortly after he arrived in the
United States as a foreign exchange student from Germany. He arrived at soccer practice that morning
with an apparent jet-lagged appearance, but he was ready to engage and insert himself into a new
community and culture. It was apparent he came to the United States, and Western High School, with
an intent to know, and be known in his new community. Fabian is a highly energetic young man,
outgoing, and willing to work hard.

Fabian was an unknown to our soccer coaching staff and team when he first arrived. We were not sure
what we would discover. Much to our pleasure, he quickly proved he was knowledgeable about the
game and was going to bring an enthusiasm to the team. He was an instant contributor and brought an
energy which was contagious and welcomed. Observing Fabian away from the soccer field continued to
hold my firm believe that he is an energetic young man. I was able to observe Fabian at other school
functions where he seemed to constantly be involved with the student body, engaging in school spirit.

Fabian’s outgoing personality was evident very early in my acquaintance with him. He came to soccer
practice where there were already 35 other student-athletes on the team along with coaches. It did not
take long for Fabian to make friends and learn names. Other athletes came alongside him and
encouraged him in friendship and making connections at school. Now, as the school year is coming to
an end, I see Fabian surrounded by good peer groups and continually being involved.

A hard-working mindset is not an easy thing to find in the late 2010s. Upon meeting Fabian, I realized
something different about him. Although not conditioned for my coaching style initially, or Michigan
humidity, he quickly proved he wasn’t going to let that define him. His work rate during practice was
always high, he was aggressive and assertive, and was willing to go the extra mile – literally. Because of
not knowing our conditioning requirements, Fabian came to Western ill prepared for the physical
demands I put on our athletes. Fabian was willing and ready to meet our extra conditioning
requirements for those who weren’t prepared. It took him extra time, but he put in the effort and met
our team expectations, a valiant victory which he proved he earned.
Because of Fabian’s involvement in Western Soccer this past season, our team was better. He was a
high energy contributor and encourager. He brought a solid work ethic to practice and games each, and
every day. Fabian stepped out of his comfort zone in Germany, inserted himself in a truly foreign
situation, and developed solid friendships which I believe will last a lifetime.

It is with great pleasure I recommend Fabian Koehler. If you have further questions of his character or
value to your organization, please contact me via my office number at (517) 782-1467.

Sincerely,

Scott A. Watterson
