LISTENING AND SPEAKING LESSON PLAN

Purpose: Playing the video which introduces the popular activity Mahjong in China helps
students to get familiar with the topic of the lesson. Beginning with the interesting video will
attract the students’ attention and show how the topic is relevant in the real world.

Procedure: “Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Mengzi. I am your instructor today. We will
exchange our ideas and communicate together in this class. In last class, we learned the hobbies
in USA. There are many types of activities in USA, like camping and biking. I am from China so
I want to introduce a popular activity in China which is a little different than many activities in
USA, such as hiking or camping. Let’s watch a short video.” I will play a 1-minute video. “This
is a popular activity in China. Lots of Chinese are crazy about it. It’s just like a card game, but
the rules of mahjong vary across different parts of China. This is also a prevalent hobby for most
Chinese. I know we are from different countries. I want to know what is the common activity in
your own country? Is it the same as activity in USA? Any volunteer wants to share with us?” I
will ask one or two students to give a short introduction in class.

Transition: “Thanks for sharing so today the topic of this class is hobbies in your country. I want
you to discuss hobbies and activities in your home country in this class.”

Activity 1: Listening to short conversations (15min)

Purpose: To allow students to practice their listening skills by giving them several conversations
(See Appendix A) and they can use the sentences in the conversations in real situations. The
student has to grab the key words and main sentence in each conversation.

Procedure: I will show the cards with different words which were introduced in last class
(Hobbies in USA) and have students to pick them up randomly and ask students to read the word
they chose. Students who have the same word will form a group of two or three. “Ok, I think you
have already found your group members. Now, we begin our activity one.” Firstly, I will
introduce 4 words which will show in the listening material (pastime, detective, traditional, chat
with) and give brief explanations of these words. Next, I will play an audio track of five short
conversations and ask students to fill in the blank (See Appendix A). When they finish, I will ask
them to check the answers in their group. Finally, I will ask a representative of a group to read
the whole conversation they complete after they check the answers in class (one group for two or
three conversations). “OK. We finish our listening task. We did a good job but I want to make
sure whether you all understand the meaning of the words you heard in the listening materials.
Can you match the words to the related picture on the slide? I will ask five persons and if you
give me a correct answer, I will give you a small gift.” I will put five words which were included
in the listening material and the picture on the slide.

Transition: “We listened to people discussing what they like to do in their free time. Talking
about hobby is a good topic in small-talk in US. So I will give you more example to ask people
about their hobbies.”

Activity 2: How to ask about other hobbies (10min)

LISTENING AND SPEAKING LESSON PLAN

Purpose: To give examples for students when they want to start a conversation with others about
a hobby.

Procedure: The teacher will show the examples on Power Point and explain the examples briefly
(See appendix B). I will ask students to try their best to remember the different ways of asking
others and responding.

Transition: “We have learned the different ways of asking and answering. I’m sure we can talk to
each other and have conversations about hobbies so next activity I want you to use the question
and answer which we just learned in your conversation”

Activity 3: Chat with each other (15min)

Purpose: To enable students to use the example to start a conversation in a real situation and
practice the ways to use the example and combine their own opinion.

Procedure: Students will have a chart (See appendix C) and stickers. I will introduce the rules
first. Students walk around the classroom and find different partners to have conversations about
hobbies. Students can ask the question or answer the question. Students can use the example on
the chart and when you use that example in your conversation, your partner should put the
sticker in the related example which you use in your chart. I will model the activity for students.
Everyone can use the example once or more than once. Finally, I will explain it: “In this way,
you should pay attention to what your partners ask, or answer and it helps to practice your
listening skills. Also, the examples which have more stickers are the sentences that you are
familiar with. On the other hand, the examples which have less stickers are the sentences you
should focus on and practice.” I will give students 10 minutes to practice.

Closure (5 min):
“Ok, we have finished our class today. At last, I want to ask you about what you learn in this
class or what was the interesting thing in this class?” I will ask one or two students. “Next class
is on next Monday. Thinks for coming today.”
