Technician Learning within a Development Process
It is recommended to develop the competencies of Technicians within a framework of a process. This
provides an effective means to ensure a consistent level of results and quality. Caterpillar has defined such
a process for Technician development, which is referred to as the Technician Career Development Process
(TCDP) – see graphic below.

2
3

After recruitment, the TCDP process begins with a skills assessment to identify skill gaps. From this, an
Individual Learning Plan (ILP) can be defined to address areas for improvement, through blended learning
solutions, which can be the combination of Web based training (WBT), Instructor Led Training (ILT), and On
the Job Training (OJT). Upon completion of the ILP, this process concludes with the final assessment and
technical certification of the acquired competencies.

The ILT courses in this catalogue are delivered by Caterpillar and can be assigned to the ILP of a
Technician according to the job position and required competencies. They predominantly refer to Advanced
and Expert level competencies. The Foundational level ILT is expected to be implemented by the dealer with
the learning material provided by Caterpillar.

Further details related to the TCDP are provided in the section “Learning as a Process” at the back this
catalogue on page 75.

We recently developed in 2014 Machine Technician curricula. On the next page it is displayed as a pyramid
graphic format related to Foundational, Advanced and Expert level training. In the “Machine Technician
Pyramid” each topic refers to a cluster of training that can include ILT, WBT and OJT. A proportion of the
pyramid relates to core requirements applicable to all technicians and product specific learning to be
assigned by the dealer as required. T
he curriculum is published in the DPC for EAME dealer use. Therefore, the details of the Advanced and
Expert curriculums (i.e. course references and descriptions) can be found in the DPC (under Service
Curricula in the Service Performance Campus).

Training Center Locations
In order to execute our Service Training strategy while meeting the estimated future training demand in our
EAME & CIS territory, we expanded our training footprint with a combination of Caterpillar Regional Training
Centers (RTC) and Regional Dealer Learning Centers (RDLC).

RTC’s are managed entirely by Caterpillar, whereas RDLC’s are partnerships with Caterpillar dealers, who
make their Service Training Excellence accredited facilities available for hosting Caterpillar courses open to
all Caterpillar dealers.

Below is graphical territorial representation of our training center locations with some high level details.

Instructor-Led Training Course Categories
a. Machine- New Product Introduction Training
The NPI (New Product Introduction) Training, primarily aims to prepare your experienced dealer Technical
Communicators and Instructors for supporting new models and cascading down the training to Technicians
at their dealership, following our train-the-training strategy.

Caterpillar’s objectives are:

1. To limit the ILT scheduled NPI courses to NPI machines with significant changes only
2. To schedule NPI training before first machine deliveries
3. To invite dealers to these sessions as required
4. To deliver at Regional Dealer Learning Centers in order to reduce student travel costs and time,
provided there is sufficient interest and that training conditions meet the required standards.

b) Machine Training
The Technician’s specialization courses are designed to further develop your Technicians in their respective
areas of specialty. These courses predominantly cater for Advanced and Expert competency levels.

On special request and depending upon our Instructor language capability, these courses can be provided in
language and on location. Please note however that all materials will be provided in English.

c) General Development Courses

These courses relate to Instructor and Technical Communicator development that provide junior or
intermediate collaborators with the knowledge and skills that is applicable to all “Instructors and Technical
Communicators”.

d) Special Course Requests

The above-mentioned training forms part of our scheduled course offerings. We can also provide additional
training support to your dealership in case you have any special course requests for your dealer and
customer technicians. These special requests can be hosted at alternative locations depending on where
the required equipment is located and your convenience. For example, potential locations could be, Málaga
RTC, Dubai RDLC, St. Petersburg RTC, Johannesburg RDLC, Casablanca RDLC, Dealer site or Customer
site.

All special requests inquiries should be sent to the relevant Caterpillar Instructor and the Letter of
Understanding (LOU) form needs to be completed with the collaboration of the Caterpillar Instructor.
This form serves to confirm exact dates and applicable conditions for the course delivery. In last section of
this catalog, under Useful Information, is a copy of the LOU form.

EAME Service Training Catalogue 2014 Page 8

Service Training for Customers

Though our first priority is to train dealer Technicians, we understand that some customers prefer to service
their own equipment themselves, and we offer our support to dealers to train customer Technicians, where
needed.
We would like to clarify our customer training policies:
 Our scheduled courses are exclusively reserved for Caterpillar or Dealer personnel. Therefore, we
do not accept Customer enrollments in our courses published in DPC.
 We can support customer training on dealer special request, to one customer or to a group of
customers. This training can be provided either at Malaga, or locally, provided that the adequate
conditions, equipment and tooling is available. The request submission is the same as the special
request submission.
 We request that at least one dealer representative participates in the course. The reason is that we
don’t want any risk of misunderstanding with the customer that could engage dealer responsibilities.

e) Technician Certifications

Caterpillar provides Technician certifications to validate that the Technician has acquired the relevant
knowledge and skills. Our Certification programs are not training events. In these programs the Technician is
required to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Currently, Caterpillar provides Advanced Mining
Certification programs.

Using the Dealer Performance Center (DPC)
The DPC is the on-line learning management system platform that Caterpillar has made available to our
dealers. This provides a one safe source for Caterpillar learning covering e-courses, learning curricula
and Instructor-led course registration.

This section provides learners and managers useful information and instructions for using the DPC.

a. The Key Functions of the DPC,

b. How to Get Access to the DPC,
c. Some Definitions used in the DPC
d. How to Register for Classes through the DPC,
e. How to follow a curriculum
f. Who to contact in case of questions.
g. How to view all classes scheduled in EAME

a. What are the Key Functions of the DPC

The DPC is a Caterpillar system offering blended learning to dealer personnel.
Its key functions are:

 Provide easy access to all Caterpillar learning,

 Provide unlimited access to hundreds of web base courses,
 Provide unlimited access to Instructor Led Training (ILT) course registration,
 Provide Sales and Services support and resource materials, including NPI, ITTP and legacy
materials, Forums, Tutorials, etc…
 Manage individual (blended) learning plans,
 Manage the learning and development of the entire dealer workforce.

b. How to Get Access to the DPC

Access the DPC through the following link: https://dlms.logicbay.com

In order to get access, you need an active Caterpillar Corporate Web Security Identification (CWS
ID), and to be registered to a DPC campus.

Please contact your Dealer DPC Administrator (See section below how to identify your DPC dealer
administrator) in order to get access to the DPC.

Notes related to subscription fee:

1. Subscripting to DPC is a one time only operation and can be carried out by the Dealer DPC
Administrator
2. For the full functionality of DPC the subscription fee is 150 $ per employee and per year
3. A reduced large user fee can be agreed upon with CAT University, for the subscription of a complete
workforce. Please get in touch with Natasza Walus for more details, Walus_Natasza_A@cat.com.

EAME Service Training Catalogue 2014 Page 87

c. Some Definitions used in the DPC
Course: A course is a training unit, with a description, well defined learning objectives and a specific
duration.
There are several types of courses:
 ILT: Instructor Led Training,
 IDL: Interactive Distance Learning,
 WBT: Web Based Training, E-learning; On line learning
 OJT: On the Job Training

We mean by “Blended learning” a combination of several types of courses.

Curriculum: Blended learning to follow in sequence for completing a complete training program.

Class: Mostly related to ILT or IDL, is a session related to a course, at a defined date and delivered at a
specific location.

Location: Related to ILT, the location describes the place where the course will be delivered. EAME
Service Training is using the location field to also identify the classes that we propose, by systematically
starting this field with “MDLC”. Then we specify the actual location (Malaga, or remote location).

Example:
”MDLC_Malaga Demonstration and Learning Center”: Classes proposed by EAME Service Training, at
Malaga,
”MDLC_Dealer Host: Casablanca”: Classes proposed by EAME Service Training, at our dealership
training center at Casablanca.

d. How a Learner can register to a class

When you want to enroll into EAME Instructor Led Training, you just need to follow this 4 step process:

Step 1: Class Search

There are two ways to search for a class: Through the Up Coming Classes Tag, or through the
Course Catalog Tag:
Up Coming Classes Tag
- Go to DPC Service Performance Center Homepage
- Click on “Quick Links” which is under the section for Events in the central lower part of the homepage.
- Click on “Up Coming Classes” Tag, under Quick Links
- In the new window that appears, you need to specify the period of time you wish to see and enter
“MDLC” in the location field. This will list all the classes proposed by EAME Service Training at Malaga
or at a remote location
Course Catalog Tag
This is located in the top left-hand side of the main menu of the Service Performance Center homepage
Once inside, enter MDLC in “Location”.
This will list all the courses proposed by EAME Service Training at Malaga or at remote location. For
each course, click on “Classes” to see the different classes proposed.

EAME Service Training Catalogue 2014 Page 88

Step 2: Class enrollment request
Select the class of your choice, click on “Register” and DPC will propose you to fill in an enrollment
form, and to submit your request,

Step 3: Enrollment Validation

Please note that all employees can register in Instructor Led Training. However, before the system will
create a valid enrolment, the required course prerequisites must be completed and each enrolment
must be validated by someone at your dealership before becoming a valid enrollment.

When an employee submits an enrollment request, his “manager” will receive a system email
notification, with an appropriate link for the validation. Caterpillar will not receive the course enrolment
until after this validation. Therefore, it is important that your DPC Administrator assigns a “manager” in
the DPC profile each of your learner that potentially wants to enroll into Instructor-led training. This
manager can be his direct supervisor, a training coordinator, or any other person whom your dealership
wants to be in charge of validating ILT Enrollments, for example the Dealer DPC Administrator.

Please refer to your DPC Administrator for more details.

Step 4: Enrollment confirmation

When your enrollment is received, the DPC will send an email notification to the learner, acknowledging
his enrollment. In case the class is full, this email will notify the learner that he is on a waiting list. If
there should be any cancellations or additional course scheduled those on the waiting list will be
notified.

Caterpillar will send a formal final confirmation to the participants 1 month ahead of time, confirming that
the class will take place.

e. How to follow a Curriculum

We propose Curricula in DPC, which are described in Service Curricula Tag in the Right Hand Side of
the main menu of the service campus.
Opening a curriculum, you can register in related classes through the same process as described
above.

Several training centers can offer the ILT courses included in a curriculum. The location describes the
place where the classes will take place, and the ones offered by Malaga always start with “MDLC”.

f. Who to contact in case of questions

 Level 1 Support: Within the Dealer
On-line support for enrollment, basic questions, adequate set up..etc: is provided by DPC Dealer
Administrators. Do not hesitate to contact them, DPC gives a complete and updated Dealer
Administrator list

 Level 2 Support: By Caterpillar

Connectivity issues, incorrect functionalities, Administrator training,..etc is provided by CAT University:
Natasza Walus, CAT University, Malaga: Phone: +34 952418756, Email: Walus_Natasza_A@cat.com

Learning as a Process
a. Technician Career Development Program (TCDP)
The graphic below illustrates the typical career development program of a Technician.
The key steps are:

1. The Technician completes a “placement assessment”, which helps to identify the Technician level,
and the skills and knowledge gaps.
2. Based on the assessment outcomes, an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is defined to address the
gaps.
3. The ILP is completed through a combination of computer based training, Instructor Led Training
with hands on practices and On the Job Training (OJT)
4. Once the Technician completes one of the Technician levels – Foundational, Advanced, or Expert –
his knowledge and skills will be validated through an assessment and/or certification program.

2
3

Caterpillar uses three Technician level descriptions – Foundational, Advanced and Expert. Dealers
may be required to add additional levels, depending on the requirements of the Service Department and
the territory. The table on the next page lists in detail of each level of Technician competency.

b) Foundational Training

Foundational ILT: Caterpillar Apprenticeship Service Technician Training (CASTT)

In the curriculum pyramids shown the Foundational curriculum is the same for all segments. The
Foundational training referred to in the curricula is Instructor Led Training (ILT) based on Caterpillar
Apprenticeship Service Technician Training (CASTT), which was made available to EAME Caterpillar
dealers since 2011 to replace the SERV3100. The CASTT Program is a complete component/systems
ILT course for training service technicians. The program is comprised of 49 modules covering various
systems, from basics to advance for service, diagnostics, and repair functions. The course design
instructs three primary areas: Foundational Knowledge, Skills Practice, and Skills Assessment. Each
module contains a Facilitator Guide, Student Guide, Activity Workbook, PowerPoint Presentation, and
knowledge and practical assessments.

The CASTT Materials are available for ordering only to training managers or training instructors. There
is no applicable charge to receive this.

To order, it is required access the DPC into the Service Campus and follow the steps below:

1. Select the “Tool & Resources” tab

2. Select “Instructor Materials” (special access is granted by Cat University)
3. Enter CASTT or Order form or SERV1896 in the Search Criteria field
4. Select the correct form that states it's dealer usage
5. Fill out the electronic form, click the Submit button, and send the email that is automatically created.

E-learning and On-line Assessments in DPC: Seven System Fundamentals:

In addition to the above material, Caterpillar has developed e-learning courses and linked assessments
that relates to the Seven Fundamental Systems curricula. These can be accessed in the DPC in the
Service Campus.

Here below are listed the seven curricula as they are published in the DPC:
1. Service Campus – Fundamentals – Air Conditioning
2. Service Campus – Fundamentals – Brakes
3. Service Campus – Fundamentals – Electrical
4. Service Campus – Fundamentals – Engine Performance
5. Service Campus – Fundamentals – Engine Repair
6. Service Campus – Fundamentals – Hydraulics
7. Service Campus – Fundamentals – Powertrain

These are now also available in French and Spanish.

In the Search field within “Available Curricula” under My Learning Dashboard, by including the text
“Fundamentals” will generate the above list.
If you then also include the text, “Certification” then all the associated on-line assessments can be
accessed under the published title, “Service Campus – Skill Gap Analysis/System Certification”.

Service Training Excellence Accreditation
Caterpillar officially accredits dealers for achieving Excellence in Service Training, based on following
the three conditions:
 Successful completion of the Learning Capability Assessment Tool (LCAT) audit
 Engagement in the Caterpillar Instructor Accreditation Program (CIAP)
 Service Excellence Bronze and Silver Criteria: TCDP Foundational, Advanced & Expert

Service Training Excellence accreditation is up for renewal in 18 months after the first accreditation, and
24 months after the first re-accreditation. Then after the second re-accreditation it is every 3 years.

For more details about Service Training Excellence Accreditation, please contact with our Learning
Consultant.
For Africa and Middle East: Dodi Hendra, email: hendra_dodi@Cat.com
For Europe & CIS: Julio Parry, email: parry_julio@cat.com.

a) Learning Capability Assessment Tool (LCAT)

LCAT is a tool to measure and assess a dealer training organization's ability to effectively deliver
service training. This tool is critical to delivering high-value, effective training in a consistent, fair, and
legal Caterpillar global standard manner. Please keep in mind that the LCAT is a tool to be used for the
evaluation of training centers, NOT individual technicians.

The LCAT consistently evaluates training centers, whether they are operating at a Caterpillar facility or
at a Caterpillar dealership. The development of the Evaluation Methodology, Assessment Criteria,
Operational Definitions, and Assessment Guidelines are a collaborative effort from Caterpillar Inc.,
Marketing Organizations, and Caterpillar Dealers worldwide. The four primary training categories that
are assessed in the LCAT are:

 Materials
 Staff
 Operations
 Administration

b) Caterpillar Instructor Accreditation Program (CIAP)

The Caterpillar Instructor Accreditation Program provides an instructor with the skills and knowledge of
planning, conducting and reviewing training within the context of instructing at a Caterpillar Dealership.
The accreditation is designed to ensure that the incumbent applies the instructional standards expected
by Caterpillar in his day-to-day instructional position.

The program provides a complete support of Instructor development, from enrollment up to ensure
correct application of skills and knowledge. The details of the CIAP program can be found in the
relevant course description of this course catalogue or in the DPC.

The instructor accreditation is valid for up to 3 years. Past this period, the Instructor will seek a re-
accreditation through submission of evidence of continued skill use.

To reach the first Service Training Excellence Accreditation, more than 50% of the instructors with more
than 2 years on the job, must be accredited through the CIAP program. For successive Service
Training Excellence Re-accreditations, all instructors should be accredited through the CIAP program.
