CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Overall Description

The City Portal is an information portal that is proposed to provide various information about
cities like entertainment places, educational institutes, social activities and other important places
such as banks, shopping centers, restaurants, temples, commercial complexes etc.
The City search is an online guide that provides information about businesses in the categories
of dining, entertainment, retail, travel, tourism and professional services in cities.
User can get information regarding their city and also can update the information regarding
their business and city information like tourist places, famous things about the city etc.
The portal aims to provide complete information about city using the following three
mechanisms:
1. Information compiled by the parent company from different sources is to be
presented on the website after thorough verification.
2. Information to be collected through classifieds posted on the portal by various
social , business , educational and professional entities having operations in cities
is to be presented.
3. Links of existing websites providing information about cities are to be provided.

One City Guide should contains some functionalities like automatic localization, navigation
support, retrieving information from points of interests, setting reminder, adding reviews,
communication support and so on. Moreover, the project should explore current innovational
technologies as many as possible and put them as building blocks like Google Map, Google Calendar,
and Twitter. And the project also needs to see how they can be tailored and composed together.
Finally, the project will result in the demonstration of prototype of city guide.

1.2 SYSTEM ANALYSIS

System analysis is a process of gathering and interpreting facts, diagnosing problems and the
information to recommend improvements on the system. It is a problem solving activity that requires
intensive communication between the system users and system developers. System analysis or study
is an important phase of any system development process. The system is studied to the minutest detail
and analyzed. The system analyst plays the role of the interrogator and dwells deep into the working
of the present system. The system is viewed as a whole and the input to the system are identified. The
outputs from the organizations are traced to the various processes. System analysis is concerned with
becoming aware of the problem, identifying the relevant and decisional variables, analyzing and
synthesizing the various factors and determining an optimal or at least a satisfactory solution or
program of action.

LITERATURE SURVEY

3cixty: An innovative way to explore cities by Catalin-MihaiBarbu, Kai-Dominik

Kuhn, Adrian Spirescu, Luca Lamorte, Christian Scanu.
3cixty is a flexible and modular platform that integrates heterogeneous data in a semantic
knowledge base and provides a full API ecosystem that affords the rapid development of web and
mobile apps. It allows answering complex queries that combine different types of information about
events, places, and means of transportation in a city. We describe ExplorMI 360, the first large-scale
solution based on 3cixty, which has been developed to support visitors to Milan and Expo 2015. By
leveraging services already deployed in smart cities, the application aims to support tourists arriving
in a new city in planning their visit, exploring their surroundings, and moving around efficiently.
Discovering bits of place histories from people's activity traces by Gennady
Andrienko,Natalia Andrienko,Martin Mladenov, Michael Mock ,Christian Pölitz.
Events that happened in the past are important for understanding the ongoing processes,
predicting future developments, and making informed decisions. Significant and/or interesting events
tend to attract many people. Some people leave traces of their attendance in the form of computer-
processable data, such as records in the databases of mobile phone operators or photos on photo
sharing web sites. We developed a suite of visual analytics methods for reconstructing past events
from these activity traces. Our tools combine geocomputations, interactive geovisualizations and
statistical methods to enable integrated analysis of the spatial, temporal, and thematic components of
the data, including numeric attributes and texts. We demonstrate the utility of our approach on two
large real data sets, mobile phone calls in Milano during 9 days and flickr photos made on British
Isles during 5 years.

A novel framework for aspect-based opinion classification for tourist places by

Muhammad Afzaal, Muhammad Usman.
Tourists want to know the good and bad aspects before going to tourist place of a city or
country. Often they search in social network websites to read previous visitors opinions. The tourism
industry in any location is highly dependent on previous visitors opinions and their perceptions.
However, due to the large amount of available opinion text, tourists are often overwhelmed with
information. As a consequence, tourists find it extremely difficult to obtain useful opinions to make
a decision about destinations, accommodation, restaurants, tours, and attractions.
Smart cities and the Internet of Things by Robert R. Harmon, Enrique G.
Castro-Leon, SandhiprakashBhide.
The smart city concept represents a compelling platform for IT-enabled service innovation. It
offers a view of the city where service providers use information technologies to engage with citizens
to create more effective urban organizations and systems that can improve the quality of life. The
emerging Internet of Things (IoT) model is foundational to the development of smart cities. Integrated
cloud-oriented architecture of networks, software, sensors, human interfaces, and data analytics are
essential for value creation. IoT smart-connected products and the services they provision will become
essential for the future development of smart cities. This paper will explore the smart city concept
and propose a strategy development model for the implementation of IoT systems in a smart city
context.
Role of Social Computing in the Implementation of a Knowledge City Portalby
Ammar Rashid , Kostas Metaxiotis, Rashid Kausar.
Knowledge Cities fall under a new area of academic research entitled Knowledge-Based
Development (KBD), which brings together research in urban development and urban studies and
planning with knowledge management and intellectual capital. The purpose of this paper is to
highlight the importance of social computing and a promising role it could play in the
implementation of Web-based Knowledge City Portal. A collection of academic and practitioner
papers/articles related to social computing, web portal, knowledge city and related areas are
analyzed and critiqued. Four critical dimensions namely Accessibility, Affordability, Usability, and
Functionality are identified and analyzed to form a conceptual implementation model for a Web-
based Knowledge City Portal.

The City Portal

2.1 Literature Review Summary

The City Portal gives city-designated users online access to their city and employee data.
Through the City Portal (accessed through a secure web URL), users are able to generate reports,
download confidential documents, run estimates for members, enroll new members, and submit
payroll data via TMRS’ FTP site. Authorized Users can also view member account balances and
service credit totals.
The City Portal may be accessed by Authorized Users designated by each city, and each city
must choose one City Portal Administrator. Before cities may use the system, City Portal
Administrators must review the Training Manual to ensure that the city’s other Users understand how
to navigate the Portal, what information may be accessed, and the importance of safeguarding member
confidentiality.

CHAPTER 3
PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION.

 The present portals have some basic problems (i.e) gathering details, information’s and
updating all required details.
 Another problem is of redundancy data and improper data (i.e) fake images, wrong phone
numbers and addresses.
 One of the key problem is the organization of the portal which causes chaos for users to use
the portal for retrievals data.

3.1 AIM:
Develop a system that can overcome all the limitations of the existing systems. The proposed
system will help the user to reduce the workload and mental conflicts. It will help the users to their
work user friendly and they can easily do their jobs without time lagging. User can directly contact to
vendors without any interference of the intermediate. To avoid errors in the data input process and
show the correct direction to the management for getting correct information from the computerized
system.
