Examples and formula for passive voice

1. Simple Present Tense


a. Active:

S + verb-1 + direct object

Ex: People make books from trees.

b. Passive:

S (direct object) + is/am/are + past participle +/- by … (agent)

Ex : Books are made from trees.

2. Present Continuous Tense


a. Active:

S + am/is/are + present participle + direct object

Ex : The surveyor is using the digital theodolite.

b. Passive:

S (direct object) + is/am/are + being + past participle +/- by … (agent)

Ex : The digital teodolit is being used.

3. Present Perfect Tense


a. Active:

S + have/has + present participle + direct object

Ex : We have verified your application.

b. Passive:

S (direct object) + have/has + been + past participle +/- by … (agent)

Ex : Your application has been verified


4. Simple Past Tense
a. Active:

S + verb-2 + direct object

Ex : Sunmark Press printed the first book in 2005.

b. Passive:

S (direct object) + was/were + past participle +/- by … (agent)

Ex : The first book was printed in 2005 by Sunmark Press.

5. Past Continuous Tense


a. Active:

S + was/were + present participle + direct object

Ex : My friend was baking bread when I came.

b. Passive:

S (direct object) +was/were + being + past participle +/- by … (agent)

Ex : Bread were being baked when I came.

6. Past Perfect Tense


a. Active:

S + had + past participle + direct object

Ex : They had used poison gas in World War I.

b. Passive:

S (direct object) + had + been + past participle +/- by … (agent)


Ex : Poison gas had been used in World War I.

7. Simple Future Tense


a. Active:
 S + will + bare infinitive + direct object

Ex : Dino will show you something interesting.

 S + am/is/are going to + bare infinitive + direct object

Ex : He is going to meet a new client tomorrow.

b. Passive:
 S (direct object) + will + be + past participle +/- by … (agent)

Ex : You will be shown something interesting.

 S (direct object) + am/is/are going to + be + past participle +/- by … (agent)

Ex : A new client is going to be met tomorrow.

8. Future Perfect Tense


a. Active:

S + will + have + past participle + direct object

Ex : I will have saved much money at this time next year.

b. Passive:

S (direct object) + will + have + been + past participle +/- by … (agent)

Ex : Much money will have been saved at this time next year.
