Cheyenne Vickrey: Personal Statement

Growing up, I had a fascination with how artist designed appealing imagery with beautiful
colors, arrangements, and stories to tell. I could spend hours immersing myself in great works
trying to pick apart how each element was created or identifying colors used. Much of my
amusement came from the idea that I could present my own imagination through the same outlet
though. Along my many years of schooling I developed personal drawing skills that were
initially going to be utilized for personal entertainment. However, high school I was presented
with a whole new medium of art that took my attention from traditional arts to digital design. My
freshman year of high school I took digital imaging as an experimental elective. Doing so helped
me discover a different form of art in which compositions were used everywhere in daily life and
we got to handle computer programs. One project specifically sold me on the idea of becoming a
graphic designer in the future. We had to reimagine a movie poster of our choosing that which I
chose to remake Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Arranging my own movie poster got me
excited for the kind of work I could be doing one day. My concepts could be used on billboards,
stores, even cars.
Currently, I am a student at State College of Florida: Manatee-Sarasota, seeking an Associates of
Science in Graphic Design Technology. I look forward to expanding my knowledge on programs
like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator with high tech labs. Along with exploring how to
communicate design concepts to mass audiences of varying age groups. Outside of my college
courses, I take personal time to practice design skills using some of the programs graphic
designers typically operate in the field. The practice allows me to familiarize myself with the
programs along with developing a portfolio that will be useful for job acquiring in the future.
I plan to continue building my knowledge on both art techniques and Adobe program usage.
While also securing experience through internships and job opportunities. After receiving my
A.S. degree I would like to move to a four-year college to obtain my Bachelor’s in Science for
Graphic Design. To gather more background, I’d like to work part-time for an entry level job
pertaining to graphic design while I work on my Bachelors. My biggest wish is to work for a
company one day helping to make designs for new brands that will be pasted on a variety of
products.
