● Before you begin, what do you think your results relative to the research

question will be? Explain. (5 points)

I don’t think that there is any relation to the total number of skittles per bag and
height of the student.

● Determine which of the two variables, number of candies per bag and height
of the person is the explanatory variable and which is the response variable
based on the research question above. (5 points)

Of the two, height of the person is the explanatory variable, and the candies per
bag is the response variable.

● Use StatCrunch to create a scatter diagram and compute the correlation

coefficient and regression equation. In StatCrunch click on “Stat” on the
toolbar at the top of the page. Select “Regression” and then “Simple Linear.”
Make sure to enter the appropriate X and Y columns for the explanatory and
response variables you identified earlier. Scroll down until you find the menu
option that allows you to enter labels and a title. Type appropriate labels for
your axes and a descriptive title. Click on “Compute!” at the bottom of the
window to see your results. There are two pages of output. Copy and paste
the regression output into your document. Click on the arrow at the bottom of
the output to see the scatter diagram with the regression line drawn through
the middle of the points. Copy and paste the scatter diagram into your
document as well. (10 points)

Simple linear regression results:

Dependent Variable: Total
Independent Variable: Height
Total = 63.116326 - 0.0606596 Height
Sample size: 86
R (correlation coefficient) = -0.093031197
● Is there a significant relationship between the two variables? Identify the
value of the correlation coefficient from the StatCrunch regression output and
identify the correct critical value for determining whether there is a significant
relationship. Is this what you expected when you thought about what the
results would be before analyzing the data? Explain. (5 points)

There isn’t a significant relationship between the two variables. The correlation
coefficient was -0.093031197. This is what I expected from looking at the data
beforehand. There isn’t much if any relation between the height of someone
buying Skittles and the number of Skittles in the bag. For the most part everyone
fell relatively close to the line with a few exceptions.

● Using the same regression output, give the regression equation. Use the
regression equation, and YOUR height in inches to predict the number of
candies in the next bag of skittles you buy. Was it appropriate to use this
regression equation to make this prediction? Why or why not? (5 points)

The equation is y= -0.0606596x+63.116326. My height inserted into the

equation would be y=-0.0606596(62)+63.116326 which equals 59.3554308. I find this
equation appropriate because it falls relatively close to the line of regression.

● Using the regression output, give the value for R2 and interpret its meaning.
(5 points)

R2= 0.0086548036
● Assume there is a significant relationship between height and number of
candies per bag. Would it be appropriate to predict the number of candies in
a bag purchased by retired Houston Rockets player Yao Ming, who is 90
inches tall? Why or why not? (5 points)

I think it would not be appropriate because it would affect the number of candies
per bag and he is much taller than the average person.

● Since you will need to compute these values using your calculator on a test,
you will do a similar analysis with a smaller data set. So that you won’t have
to enter so many values into your calculator, select a systematic sample of
data values to use. Start with the 4th row OF DATA and use every 10th
row thereafter. Be sure to look at the row numbers in StatCrunch, NOT
Excel (in Excel, the row numbers are off because the headings are found in
row 1). Enter these values into your calculator and report the correlation
coefficient and regression equation. Give the appropriate critical value and
state whether or not there is a significant linear relationship between X and Y
for this smaller data set. (10 points)

Correlation coefficient: .4453851936

Regression equation: y=.3558760936x+36.50981319
