Analysis of Vishvamitra Drawing Method

A method for drawing the Sri Yantra is described h ere:

The method is very elegant but unfortunately it doesn't produce a very accurate Sri Yantra.
Zooming on the central part of the figure we can see that the mistakes at the crossing points
are significant.

But a hand drawn figure is not very precise to start with so I used Visio to acheive a greater
accuracy.

The resulting figure is shown below:

We can see clearly that this method leads to significant errors at the intersections. Better
results would be obtained if the method
How to Draw the Sri Yantra
Let it be known that in theory it is not possible to draw a perfect Sri Yantra, but for all p ractical
purp oses it is possible to get close enough. T here is an inf inite different Sri Yantra
confi gurations. This method is concerned with the proper drawing sequence to procude a
confi guration with minimal number or errors. Not mininal amount but minimal number of errors.
Meaning than only two of the intersections will not match perfectly.

Please note that this method can lead to many different variety of Sri Yantras. In fact it will lead
to an infinite variety of different versions, depending on where y ou will choose to draw the five
key lines. This method may or may not lead to an Optimal S ri Yantra.

There is a simple and logical sequ ence to draw the Sri Yantra. When using this sequence the
errors will be found at only two of the triple inte rsections. When a Sri Yantra is drawn with an
improp er sequence we find errors at more than two of the intersections. This observation allows
us to evalutate the knowledge of the author of a Sri Yantra. If errors are found at more than two
intersections t hen this shows that the Sri Yantra wasn't drawn p roperly.

The Sri Yantra is not an easy figure to draw. The challenge, if you accept it, is to draw the figure
so that all the lines meet as p recisely as possible at the triple intersections.

This drawing sequence will ensure that all the nodes match perfectly except at two of the nodes.
The amount of mistake will depend on how much work y ou are willing to do. By going back to
the 5th key line and nudging it's position (up or down) you will be able, by trial and error to
reduce the error to a minimum.
The green lines are the key lines that define the Sri Yantra. They are not unique, in the
sense that other lines could be se lected. But there will always be 5 specific points to
define the Sri Yantra. This is similar to an equation with five var iables or five degrees
of freedom.. You need to choose values (p ositions) for these five variables to
comp letely define it's shape. By choosing different p ositions for these lines you will end
up with different Sri Yantra configurations.
The green circles shows the points that are used to draw the new lines. The other
point is usually where the base of a triangle meets the vertical axis. New reference
points are created every t ime a new line is drawn.
Line 5 is the last line that is needed to finish the Sri Yantra. There is no real obv ious way to
know where it should go other than by trial and error. Of course this can be programmed and
calcu lated but this is beyound the purpose of this page. In this example the 5th and last line is
very close to it's ideal position so the error in the final figure is very small. If it is drawn
high er or lower the error will increase prop ortionally. We will show later where the error
shows up.
Here is where the error shows up (indicated by the two red circles). In this case the error is
small and h ard to see in a drawing of this size. See caption of the right. Using a thicker line is
a common way to disguise the errors. The thicker the line the mor e difficult to see the error. If
the error is too big then we need to go back to step 6 and change the p osition of line 5. After
redrawing you will see if the error is bigger or smaller. A bigger error indicates that you need
to move the line in the op posite direction.
The last step is to draw the bindu p oint. To find the center of the smallest inner
triangle we draw a circle inside the triangle and locate the bindu at the center of
that circle.
This completes the drawing of the center p art of the Sri Yantra. Not show here
are the others circles with p etals and the outer square enclosure.
