LESSON PLAN ELEMENTS REQUIRED:

 Students will be able to define the difference between personal and private
information.
Objective
 Students will understand what information is okay to share others and what is not.
 Students will learn the consequences of sharing information with others.
The teacher will start by saying “today I want to learn more about each of you. So we are
going to start this lesson by going around the classroom and each sharing one piece of
information about ourselves to get to know each other even better.” In order to show
students how to do this the teacher will start by giving an example about himself/herself
before going around the room and having each student state something about themselves.
After each student has had a chance to share information about them the teacher will ask
Anticipatory Set student “was it fun to learn more about your classmates? Why or why not” while calling on
students to share. The teacher will then explain, “it is always fun to get to know each other
better by sharing information with one another. We just did that in the safe setting of our
classroom but some situations are not appropriate to share you personal information like on
the internet. When we share information on the internet we feel good because we receive a
like or comment from another person but sometimes that information is more than personal
information but actually private information. So today we are going to learn more about the
difference between personal and private information.”

The teacher will then explain that we are going to watch two videos the first one called
“NetSafe Episode 6: What is Personal Information? (Grades 4-6)” by PlanetNutshell and the
second one called “Private and Personal Information” by Common Sense Education. After
the video the teacher will ask students, “what is private information?” While students
answer the teacher will write their responses on the white board. Then the teacher will ask,
“what is personal information?” Again while writing students responses on the whiteboard.
Next the teacher will have students classify examples of private and personal information by
raising their hand and giving examples of each and which category they would fall in. While
students are suggesting examples and placing them under personal or private on the T chart
on the whiteboard students will have to vote with their thumb if they agree (thumb up),
disagree (thumb down), or do not know (thumb to the side). After going through multiple
examples of each, the teacher will ask students “why they believe there is information that is
Teach Lesson / personal and private?” The teacher will give students time to share before explaining,
Model “information that is private should stay private for their safety especially on the internet.
While although it may be fun to connect with others on the internet it is important to protect
yourself and not share more than you should.” The teacher should explain that as humans’
people have an instinct to share with others but asking student “why do you think that
people like to share?” While listening to the students responses the teacher make sure they
include that it makes them feel good to share about themselves, helps you learn more about
others experiences, helps you connect with other people, helps you connect and make new
friends, and helps you inspire others to be like you. The teacher will explain “that although
these are all good benefits to sharing with others they do not outweigh the consequences of
sharing private information. By sharing this type of private information you are giving
possible dangerous people information about you and allowing them to know about you. It
is important that we all remember that we should only share this information with an adult
or friend you know and trust.”
The teacher will explain to students that they are now going to be doing a Kahoot on private
verse personal information. Then tell them that they can be in partners with one other person
Guided Practice or be alone but they are all only allowed three letter names. The teacher will then excuse
odd computer numbers to get computers and then when most return excuse even computer
numbers. Students will all log into Kahoot and follow along through all fifteen questions
while trying their best to get all the answers correct.

After finishing the Kahoot, students will all be given a piece of paper with a two questions
Independent Practice
exit ticket. Students will be directed to answer the two questions independently and then
turn it upside down until all students are done.

After all students complete the questions they will be asked “what did you learn today about
Closure
private and personal information?” Students will be probed to check for understand before
turning in their exit ticket.

Evaluation Students will be assessed based upon their Kahoot score report and how effectively they
*Assessment/Rubrics answered the questions on their exit ticket.
