RAILWAY BRIDGES
FOREWORD
‘This code contains provisions for the design of new Railway bridges and for seismic
evaluation of existing bridges inthe process oftheir seismic upgradation and retrofit.
Seismic provisions earl of Bridge rules were based upon 15:1893-1988. IS code was
completely revised in 2002 incorporating the latest design philosophy. The new methods of
11893-2002 were based onthe international practices andi toh into account the Flxiiity
and Ductlty of the structure while calculating design forces. S:1893 (Part 3) contains
provisions for seismic design of Railways and Road Bridges. However, soine of the design
parameters such a Live Load combination factor, Response reduction factor etc need to be
Railway specific which were finalized inthe BSC mestings. Therefore our Raikvay specific
seme code is based upon ':1893 (pat 3) with changes in some parameters/design factors
related to Railway loading only. The design procedure and methodology remains exactly the
same as given inthe IS:1893 (part3). Uniss otherwise stated, his standard shall be ead
necessarily n conjunction with Is:1893 (Part 1), which contains provisions that are general in
nature and applicable to all typeof structures. Forthe purpose of determining design seismic
forces, the countryisclassified into four seismic zones sper Fig of:1893 (Part).
‘This standard has been formulated to ensure that bridges possess at least a minimum
strength to withstand earthquakes. The intention Is not to prevent Samage to them due tothe
‘most severe shaking that they may be subjected to during thelr ifetime. Actual forces that
appear on different portions of bridge during earthquakes may be greater than the design
seismic forces specified inthis standard, However, ductity arising from material behavior,
