Climate Change
Nigeria

Climate change is causing the planet’s temperature to increase at an alarming rate, which
harms our planet and causes many natural disasters. However, Africa may be the most vulnerable
country to climate change. Global warming is the product of increasing greenhouse gases, which
are mostly made by humans. The top five polluting countries are China, United States, Brazil,
Indonesia, and Japan. Some examples of how humans activities cause pollution are: pollution-
producing oil and other fossil fuels such as industrial processes, electricity generation, and motor
cars. Disasters caused by global warming and climate change include heat waves, wildfires,
droughts and flooding. Climate change and global warming are a global problem and everyone
needs to pitch in to address the issue. As dangers increase, climate change will worsen. Because
of climate change, many countries are going through a drought due to little rainfall. Climate
change is and will continue to harm all of us unless governments take action
One of the most affected continents, to global warming, is Africa. 25 years ago in the
northern regions of Nigeria a climate disaster happened. Some of Nigeria's rivers and lakes got
dried up. In the south of Nigeria erosion has made poverty greater in local populations and the
climate change is also reflected in the massive flood experienced in 2012, houses, farms, farm
products, properties and even human beings were swept away. The rising sea levels are
threatening Nigeria's coastal regions and it makes Nigeria prone to flooding. As part of the
efforts to mainstream the climate change, the Federal government has taken steps to addressing
environmental problems. Failure to tackle the issue of climate change have also contributed to
the rise of insurgency groups across the country. Nigeria wants to raise awareness about climate
change, adapt policies, and reduce the causes of vulnerability. To help vulnerability farmers can
incorporate sustainable land management practices such as agroforestry
Nigeria's main goal is to keep on growing but not produce a ton of carbon although they
do have carbon trading in place in some places. To produce low carbon, Nigeria will adopt a
low-carbon strategy in the power sector, for example, including energy efficiency, solar and
wind energy; and combined cycle technology in gas-fired generation. A variety of barriers,
including lack of information and technology, limited capacity in institutions and lack of
financing, stand in the way of the economy growing. The Federal Government of Nigeria has
established the National Climate Change Trust Fund and the Environmental Sustainability Group
to design and attract financing mechanisms for adaptation initiatives, but they dont know if there
is a need to increase the capacity of the policy to improve reduction of greenhouse gases.

Thank you honorable chair,

The country of Nigeria feels that the issue of climate change is weakening their economy. All of
the disasters that come with global warming are ruinng their land. Flooding is the biggest
problem and is one of the causes of death. The consequences Nigeria is facing are really tough
and challenging to fix. This body should understand that due to the climate change, humans need
to make a better impact on the world to help global warming. The government of Nigeria has
dealt with the issue of climate change by establishing the National Climate Change Trust Fund
and the Environmental Sustainability Group. This group is used to design and attract financing
mechanisms for adaptation initiatives. The country of Nigeria courages the committee to keep
trying to raise awareness about climate change, so the world can do better, and produce low
carbon to the country its self can keep growing.
