“Adventure must start with running away from home.” My whole life I’ve been running

away from home. I was born in Denver, Colorado, then moved on to live in 6 different states due

to my dad’s job. Out of all of our relocations, I still call New Orleans home. Growing up here, I

learned many lessons and got to take part in so many experiences. Going into the heart of New

Orleans is life changing. Families sit on corners of the French Quarter with hunger in their eyes,

striving to live anyone else’s life but their own. They have to wonder when their next meal will

be, where they are going to go when the next hurricane hits, or when they can get their next

bottle of water. After living in New Orleans for 5 years, we moved back to Denver, but I will

never forget the faces of those who are struggling. Seeing these same families every weekend

broke my heart, this is when I started to develop a passion of giving back.

Sophomore year of high school, I was tasked to do a project that would impact my

community. I reached out to a family friend who is involved with a school in Haiti and told her I

wanted to do something for these kids who I know are just like those families back in New

Orleans. I wanted to finally do something that would give back and make a real difference in the

world. I’ve always wanted to change the world, and with this project, I finally did. I decided I

wanted to do a hand sanitizer drive for kids in Haiti. Diseases as simple as the flu is deadly there

due to lack of resources. I reached out to local community members and informed them about

my project and what my goal was, to help these kids live a happy, healthy life. After a short few

weeks, I managed to collect over 3,000 bottles of hand sanitizer for these kids. We boxed up all

of the donations and sent them off to Haiti. A week or so after the donation was in Haiti, I

received a few pictures of these kids with my hand sanitizer. At first I was in shock, that was my
hand sanitizer, I put that bottle in a box and shipped it off and now it’s there, in Haiti! The girl in

the picture was smiling ear to ear and her eyes were bright as she was kneeling over the box of

sanitizer, her hungry eyes were fed. The second picture was a little girl pumping sanitizer into

her hands. This picture made a huge impact on me. She was so incredibly happy. Her face

radiated gratitude and relief and my soul finally was at peace knowing that I put those feelings

there. I was hooked. I found my home not in a physical location but in helping others.

Ronald Reagan once said, “We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.” I

still crave adventure, and opportunities, but I found a home I can take with me anywhere.

Through my passion, I have learned to persevere through hard times, have confidence in myself

and others, work hard no matter where you are or what your circumstances are, to always life

humbly and kindly, and to never take advantage of what you have because like those kids in

Haiti, you could have close to nothing. I hope to keep embodying my passion within my career

and in my everyday life as I grow older and continue to go on new adventures and run away to

new places.
Dear __________ Admissions,

Hello, my name is Grace Krumwiede and I would like to introduce myself as I am

extremely interested in attending_____________. First, it is important to outline the program I
am coming from. Even at 14, I had an 100 foot view. I chose the EDGE program because I
wanted depth in my education and opportunities that I might not receive otherwise in the
traditional environment. Moreover, I chose the EDGE program because I wanted a hands-on
learning experience. I was able to take advantage of various opportunities through my
participation in the EDGE program.

I have worked closely with a local doctor at an urgent care, learning how to diagnose
patients and how to work an x-ray machine. I even got the chance to put a patient through an
x-ray. I have also gotten the opportunity to attend a Mini-Medical University at a local hospital
where I got to learn how to cast an arm and a thumb, tour the cath lab, the ER, and the oncology
wing. I also completed my own project called Helping Hands which promoted a healthier
lifestyle for kids in Haiti.

Additionally, we have worked diligently to house and reflect on these experiences and
opportunities through the development of a comprehensive e-portfolio outlining all four years in
high school. I was wondering if I could get feedback on this portfolio when you get a chance?
Please reference the link below. Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration. Please feel free to contact me with any
questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Grace Krumwiede
