There are some previous studies referring to the application of using comic book in

reading comprehension class (Harwiningsih (2014), Arroyani (2010)). These previous


research focus on the participant in the eight grade students. Harwiningsih (2014) had
conducted a classroom action research on the eight grade students of junior high school by
using comic in teaching english writing and Arroyani (2010) had conducted an experimental
research on the eight grade students of junior high school in taching reading comprehension
especially for narrative text. Harwiningsih (2014) found out that the students in cycle 1 were
very reluctant to work individually. Aroyani (2010) added that it was difficult to find
appropriate comic strips and also arrange the coherence paragraph because of the newspaper
in English language such as Jakarta Pos was so rare in her town. Based on the the lacks of the
studies, The present researcher will use comic in teaching and learning for English narrative
reading comprehension for the tenth grade students of senior high school. Moreover, this
research will make the students to work in small group discussion consisting of 3-4 students
to make them active in following the teaching and learning process and find the comic in
disney story and the researcher will try to adjust the story with the curriculum.

Harwiningsih (2014) had conducted a classroom action research on the eight grade
students of junior high school by using comic in teaching english writing. She said that using
comic as a teaching media gave a significant improvement on the students’ achievement.
Besides, Arroyani (2010) had conducted an experimental research on the eight grade students
of junior high school in taching reading comprehension especially for narrative text. The
result of the study showed that comics can improve students’ score and also motivate students
in learning English. Moreover, Royanti (2007) had conducted an experimental research on
the eight grade students of junior high school teaching english speaking for story telling . She
said that the students get the better score after using a comic as a media in learning English.
Jones (2010) had conducted an experimental research about the application of comic books
for Japanese university students’. The result of the research showed that the use of comic
books in reading comprehension gave positive effect through the students’ achievement.
Using comic books as a media in teaching and learning can be also a tool for EFL teachers to
increase students’ enjoyment of reading in english. Fitriyah (2015) had also conducted a
classroom action research for the tenth grade students of senior high school in teaching reding
comprehension. She stated that comic as media are able to improve the students’ score.
Viewed from the research design used by all the previous research, Classroom Action
Reesearch attract less attention while there are two studies that used experimental design
(Arroyani, 2010 and Royanti, 2007). From the view of skill that used in the classroom, there
are two studies that used writing (Harwiningsih, 2014) and speaking (Royanti 2007). From
the view of the participant, the previous studies used comic for the eight grade students
(Harwiningsih 2014, Arroyani 2010, and Roanti 2007). Besides, Harwiningsih (2014) found
