• SIA-Documentation D0150
published by the Swiss Society
for Earthquake Engineering
and Structural Dynamics SGEB
in 1998.
• 60 measures identified where
action is needed.
• The responsible for each of the
60 measures are named.

Seismic Hazard in Switzerland and the Rest of Europe
[Giardini 2005]
Earthquake scenario:
Basel 1356 earthquake repeated today:
50‘000 Mio. CHF building damage
no measures
recommended

Seismic Assessment of Existing Buildings
• Original state:
- soft-story in 1st floor
- insufficient diaphragm action of very thin RC
slabs
• Retrofit:
- Seismic isolation by high damping rubber
bearings
• Original state:
- slightly reinforced concrete frame with
masonry infills
• Retrofit:
- all 4 sides strengthened:
3 RC walls and 1 steel truss.
• Original state:
- URM walls
• Retrofit:
- vertical post-tensioning by CFK tendons
• Original state:
- non ductile steel frame
- soft ground floor
• Retrofit:
- 2 new slender RC walls
per principal direction
• Little interaction between the early phase and the later phases
• Strong interaction between phases 2 and 3
• The expertise of phase 2 specialists of allowed to implement
phase 3 much more quickly.
• This expertise was essential for the sensitization of the general
public and of the decision makers.
• We would lag behind 10 years or more in seismic risk mitigation
without the experience of phase 2.
