Newsome was an accomplished high school coach for 16 years. According to an article
from GoWasps, Newsome made his first stop at Ervinton High School. There he earned the
Lonesome Pine District Coach of the Year in 1984.

Newsome once said during an interview, “I first coached at the smallest high school in
the state of Virginia. We won seven games which was the most they had ever won. They gave
me a diamond ring and I probably should have stopped coaching right then.”

Newsome’s storied career did not stop there. He then coached for 11 years at Kecoughtan
High School in Hampton before concluding his time in the prep ranks at Heritage High School in
Newport News.

Newsome collected many accolades while coaching high school football including five
district coach-of-the-year honors. He was named the Eastern Region Coach of the Year on three
occasions and was selected as the AP and VHSL Virginia State Coach of the Year in 1998.

According to an article from Daily Press, Newsome coached for seven seasons at James
Madison University as the offensive line coach and won a Division II National Championship in
2004. Newsome then coached seven years at Virginia Tech (VT) as the offensive line coach
where he went to three Orange Bowls, two Peach Bowls, a Sugar Bowl, and a Russell Athletic
Bowl.

After his tenure at VT, Newsome made two stops at JMU for one season, before
returning back home to E&H. According to an article by Emory & Henry College, after earning
his Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education from E&H 1982, Newsome returned to his
alma mater in January of 2014 to become the program’s 20th head coach.

Saxton said, “He was all about uniformity and everyone putting the team before themselves. He
was also an incredible person and wanted to see everyone succeed not only in football but in life
as well.”

Newsome was not only admired by his former players but also his former coaches.

Associate Head Football Coach Josh Wellenhoffer said, “Coach Newsome was a great
person who cares a lot about his players and his coaches. He always had a great vision for this
