RELFELCTION PAPER Porter Treanor

09 Dec 2018

The first thought that comes to mind about my learning experience from this class is

exploring reasons why data on any topic would show something. Critically thinking about why

that on average men die earlier than women, why a woman would say no to casual sex more than

men and the reasons that may be correlated to why these things happen. Overall this class has

helped me to take inconsideration the diversity of environmental and natural impacts on humans.

To look deeper than, oh this guy is weird, or this lady has some real problems. To be more

specific, I’m talking about the different temperaments people may have and with connection to

parenting styles and then how that may influence their identity status. The connectivity between

many of the sections we went through is an interesting thing to think about. I feel that

connectivity was a theme for me this semester. Trying to see the connections of Erickson’s

theory’s in real life, especially the adolescence socioemotional crises of identity vs. confusion.

This is something I felt was meaningful for that period of life. Because I believe that during this

period for me, I felt the importance of contemplating what kind of person I would want to be.

My biggest accomplishment in this course was participating and sharing my ideas. Often,

I am anxious about sharing in class and usually I don’t say much during the semester. My

openness this semester helped me practice my critical and creative thinking. It enhanced my

learning experience and interest in psychology. I also think that a couple other classes that I have

previously taken at SLCC has helped with that enhancement. By taking brain and behavior in a

previous semester I was able to connect somethings. Such as the HPA axis and the fight or flight

response with what we learned about in late childhood and puberty. Since I understood the basic

concepts and functions of the CNS and the PNS I was able to visualize the content better than if I

was just hearing about it then. I also was able to connect parts of the personal growth and

development class to this course. For one, the basic Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, but we took a

more in depth look at its involvement in a person’s development and the idea that it may help

explain why some people with specific psychological disorders may be at a certain stage during

life.

I appreciate this course this semester. I have all my notes from chapter one all the way

through chapter sixteen, and I will probably refer to them for context and that good old memory

recall for my future classes, or for a conversation with a friend. Thank you for putting effort into

teaching (generativity), rather than not caring (stagnation).
