S2 Security Corporation 3 February 2016

An S2 security management system is web-based and does not require a
computer to operate. A computer is required only for system setup,
programming, and monitoring.
The system is implemented using a three-tiered, modular hardware
hierarchy:
 S2 controller
 S2 node
 Application extension blades
This modular design makes it possible, even during network downtime,
for the system to continue to manage access control and store system
activity logs. When network connectivity is re-established, the system
activity logs are re-integrated automatically.

The S2 controller is the top hardware tier. Its components are located
on an S2 Network Controller.
The embedded S2 controller software includes an operating system, a
web server, application software, and a database containing personnel
and system activity information. The S2 controller software can control
multiple nodes.

The S2 node is the middle hardware tier. An S2 node is the system

component that manages local access control decisions, using data
provided by the S2 controller.
The S2 node persistently stores its configuration information and event
data, so it will continue to function if the connection with the S2 controller
is lost. It also manages communications between the S2 controller and
some number of application extension blades and distributes power to the
blades.
The S2 node communicates with the S2 Network Controller over the IP
network via port 7262.
Current generation S2 nodes, which use a built-in web server for
configuration, are:
 S2 Network Node with M1-3200 blade
 S2 Network Node VR
 S2 MicroNode™ Plus

S2 Security Corporation 4 February 2016

S2 NetBox Hardware Installation Guide Preparing to Install

Earlier generation S2 nodes are:

 S2 Network Node with CBM blade
 S2 MicroNode™

Note: This guide describes hardware installation instructions for

the S2 Network Node with M1-3200 and the S2 Network Node
VR.

For hardware installation information on S2 MicroNode,

S2 MicroNode Plus, and S2 Network Node with CBM blade, refer
to the S2 MicroNode Hardware Installation Guide (Document
#MN-HW-xx), the S2 MicroNode Plus Hardware Installation Guide
(Document #MNP-HW-xx), and the S2 Network Node Hardware
Installation Guide (Document #NN-HW-xx).

The application extension blades make up the bottom hardware tier.

They are connected to readers, inputs, outputs, and temperature sensors.
All application extension blades receive power and communications from
the S2 node via a ribbon cable bus. Each S2 node supports up to seven
application extension blades in any combination.

Issues to consider when selecting a topology for the installation include

simplicity, security, wiring requirements, bandwidth requirements, site
distances, current network topology, and the number of security system
resources to be wired.

The simplest topology for an S2 NetBox installation, shown in Figure 10,

will be the most common case for small systems. It includes the following:
 S2 NetBox with a Mini-ITX Network Controller.
 S2 Network Node with M1-3200 blade.
 Access control blade with a card reader.

The topology shown in Figure 11 is somewhat more complicated, but it is

inherently more secure. A security VLAN is used to create a subnet for
the security system. As a result, the corporate LAN does not directly carry
traffic between S2 nodes and an S2 controller.
The advantages to this topology are increased network security and
decreased bandwidth requirements. The disadvantages include
potentially increased wiring and greater complexity.

S2 NetBox Hardware Installation Guide Mounting the Enclosure

The following S2 systems have rack-mount enclosure versions:

 S2 NetBox
 S2 Network Node
 S2 NetBox Extreme

Before you install the rack-mount unit, consider the following operating
environment issues shown in the following table.
Table 4: Rack-Mount Environment Precautions.

Operating Environment Issue Description

Elevated Operating Ambient The operating ambient temperature of the rack

environment may be greater than room ambient if it is
installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly.
Equipment should be installed in an environment
compatible with the maximum ambient temperature
(Tma) specified by the manufacturer.
Reduced Air Flow Equipment in a rack should be installed with a sufficient
amount of air flow required for safe operation.
Mechanical Loading Equipment in a rack should be installed so that a
hazardous condition does not occur due to uneven
mechanical loading.
Circuit Overloading You should consider effect that overloading of the
circuits might have on overcurrent protection and supply
wiring when the equipment is connected to the to the
supply circuit.
You should also ensure that equipment nameplate
ratings are used when addressing circuit overloading.

Reliable Earthing Reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment should be

maintained. Particular attention should be given to
supply connections other than direct connections to the
branch circuit.
An example would be the use of power strips.

This section describes possible configurations with additional access
blades and how to determine their slot and position numbers.

The S2 NetBox and S2 Network Node enclosures have eight slots in the
aluminum chassis. The leftmost slot is reserved for the S2 Network Node
with M1-3200 blade running the S2 node software (Input Rated:
2V/178mA).
Optionally mounted to its right (depending on how the enclosure is
configured) in Slot 1, the S2 NetBox and S2 Network Node can contain
one of the following blades:
 Access control blade (ACM)
 Input blade
 Output blade
 Temperature blade
The S2 NetBox VR Quatro comes standard with an access control blade
installed in Slot 1 and up to three more blades for a total of four blades.

Note: The S2 NetBox Extreme contains only an S2 controller, because

there are no additional slots for an S2 node or access blades.

The remaining slots, numbered 2 through 7, can hold any combination of

access control, input, output, and temperature application extension
blades, as shown Figure 31.

You can use the slots in any sequence you choose. Note that the slots
are physical mounting points only. The electrical connection is made
through the ribbon cable, as shown in Figure 34.

Regardless of the physical slot in which a blade is mounted, its slot

number is determined by the ribbon-cable connector you plug into the
application extension blade. This is because the ribbon cable (shown in
Figure 34) is a bus, and a blade’s position on the bus determines its slot
number.
For example, even if a blade is mounted in physical slot 3, if it is attached
to ribbon cable connector 4, the application will see it in slot 4 on the bus.

Important: The blade running the S2 node application software must be

attached to the leftmost connector on the ribbon cable.

Position numbers are determined by the connector position on the blade

itself.
For more information, see the following sections:
 Connecting Readers on page 39.
 Connecting Inputs on page 41.
 Connecting Outputs on page 50.

CAUTION: Blades are not hot-swappable. Before connecting or

disconnecting blades in the enclosure, be sure to remove
power from the system, after stopping all processes.

1. Power down the system using one of the procedures shown in

Performing an Orderly System Shutdown on page 31.
2. Thread the provided standoff tube down onto the threaded post on the

CAUTION: Do not supply power to the S2 node until all connections

have been made to the new blade (including inputs, outputs,
and readers, as described in the next section).

S2 Security Corporation 37 February 2016

CAUTION: Perform all the procedures in this section before powering
up the unit.

The S2 NetBox and S2 Network Node each support up to seven

application extension blades in any combination. The S2 NetBox VR
Quatro and S2 Network Node VR support up to four application extension
blades.
There are four types of application extension blades:
 Access control blade (ACM): includes two Wiegand reader interfaces,
four supervised inputs, and four relay outputs (Input Rated: 6V/70mA).
An access control blade is included in the S2 NetBox, S2 NetBox VR Quatro and the S2
Network Node enclosures.
An access control blade is compatible with UL listed 26-bit, 128-bit and 200-bit Wiegand
readers.
 Input blade: includes eight supervised inputs (Input Rated: 6V/60mA).
 Output blade: includes eight relay outputs (Input Rated: 6V/55mA).
 Temperature blade: includes eight temperature input points. (Not UL
Listed).
You can easily add application extension blades to your system in the
future by following the steps in the section: Installing Additional Blades on
page 33.
This section describes how to connect readers, inputs, outputs, and
temperature sensors.

CAUTION: Make sure all power to the S2 node is disconnected before

wiring and/or connecting any readers to a blade. Perform all
wire cutting terminations away from the enclosure because
stray wire ends may come in contact with one of the blades
and cause a short-circuit.

1. Power down the system using one of the procedures described in

Performing an Orderly System Shutdown on page 31.
2. Be sure that you are grounded, and then pull the wiring through a
knockout in the enclosure.
Wire specification: Twisted, shielded 22 AWG Belden #9536 (6

Note: Each access control blade can supply a maximum of 400

milliamps peak power to the reader(s) (2.8A maximum is
supplied). If the reader(s) connected to the access control blade
draw more than 400 milliamps, external power must be supplied to
these readers by a UL 294 or UL 603 Power Limited Supply.

The color-coded wires from the reader wiring harness must be connected
to the 7-pin connector. The color-coding for Power (red), Ground (black),
Data 0 (green), and Data 1 (white) is Security Industry Association (SIA)
standard.
 Reader Beeper control: This varies by manufacturer and model.
Refer to the documentation provided by the reader manufacturer for
details on your particular reader. Typically, the reader will beep for the
duration of a momentary unlock, or until the door is opened. This
occurs whether the door is unlocked by a valid card read or from the
application. If no beeper is desired, do not connect the beeper control
wire.
 Reader LED control: This varies by manufacturer and model. Some
use two-wire LED control and some use one-wire control. Refer to the
documentation provided by the reader manufacturer for details on
your particular reader. Control involving signal pulsing to change LED
color is not supported.
The access control blade has both red and green LED control
connections. The 7-pin reader connector wiring is shown in Figure 35.

Note: LED display behavior for your particular reader may vary. Refer to
the reader manufacturer documentation.

Inputs are dry contact only. An input looks for a change in resistance, not
a change in voltage.

CAUTION: Make sure all power is off before wiring and/or connecting
any input to a blade. Do not feed any voltage into the inputs.
This may cause the input to function improperly and
potentially void the warranty.
Perform all wire cutting terminations away from the
enclosure because stray wire ends may come in contact with
one of the blades and cause a short-circuit.

Power down the system using one of the procedures described in

Performing an Orderly System Shutdown on page 31.
1. Be sure that you are grounded, and then pull the wiring through a
knockout in the enclosure.
Wire specification: Twisted, shielded 22 AWG Belden #9462 or
equivalent. Maximum distance: 2000 feet (610 meters).
2. Connect the input wires to the 2-pin input connector provided.
3. Be sure there is no power to the system, and then plug the connector
into an input position on an access control blade or input blade. These
connectors are polarized and can only be inserted one way.
4. If you are connecting previously wired or previously installed inputs,
determine the input supervision type: normally open (NO) or normally
closed (NC); zero, one, or two resistors; or single resistors in parallel
or series.
You will need this information for the software setup of the input. See
Input Supervision Types on page 42 for details.

Note: The system supports the use of 1k Ohm resistors only.

5. If you are installing the input device, refer to the input device manual
to determine if the device circuit is normally open (NO) or normally
closed (NC).
6. Select the input supervision type you want, and then install the input
device.

CAUTION: Make sure all power is off before connecting any input to a
blade.

This section describes how to connect the enclosure to a power source.
All installations must be conducted by a qualified electrician in
accordance with National Electrical code (NEC) or specific country local
wiring rules.

WARNING: Do not apply power to the system until all connections have
been made for readers, inputs, outputs, and temperature
sensors.

The AC power must be 100-240VAC, 50-60 Hz. Power must come from a
separate circuit with its own breaker and an isolated earth ground.
A minimum of 14 AWG (1.5 mm2) wires must be used for installation.
Wiring must be protected at the building source by a 15A circuit breaker
(or 16A for EU installations). This circuit breaker is the main disconnect
device and must be readily accessible.
A minimum 14 AWG (1.5 mm2) earthing conductor must also be provided
and connected to the ground stud, marked , as indicated in the wiring
diagram.

Battery standby power has not been investigated by UL and cannot be
used in UL installations.
The S2 Network Node does not include a battery back-up, but one can be
provided and mounted on the floor of the wall-mount enclosure (see
Figure 53). The recommended battery is a 12 Volt Sealed or Valve
Regulated Lead Acid type with a capacity of 7AH.

Note: Use of a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is recommended

over a backup battery.

The battery cable is included but is not pre-installed. This cable has a 3-
pin connector for the S2 node (with the center position empty) and two
quick connectors for the battery terminal tabs.

CAUTION: Do not connect the battery terminals to the S2 node until

power is supplied to the node.

The specified battery is not meant to function as a UPS, but rather to

supply sufficient power for system function in case of power failure.
During a power loss, the backup battery will keep the S2 node powered
and operations associated with portals functioning.
Do not connect a battery before external power is supplied. It will
immediately power up the S2 node and begin to drain the limited battery
power. Once external power is supplied, you can connect the battery and
it will charge at 12V via the connection with the S2 node.

Before connecting the S2 controller to the corporate network, be sure to
review the following information. You may need to set up a small network
between the S2 system and a PC that can be used to configure the
system before it is connected to the corporate network.

Required: Refer to Tech Note 24: S2 Node Operational Requirements

which pertains to networking requirements for optimal S2
node performance.

Network setup has not been evaluated by UL. Connection to a PC has

been investigated only for system setup, programming, and supplemental
monitoring.
The system is configured with a factory default IP address of
192.168.0.250.
 If this is a valid address on a corporate network that is available for
use, you can connect the system, in its factory default state, to the
corporate network before configuring it. The corporate IT organization
will be able to tell you if the default IP address is available on the
corporate network.
 If the system’s default IP address is not available on the network, it
will need to be changed during the initial software setup, to an
address provided by the corporate IT organization.

Important: Do not connect the system to the corporate network until

its IP address has been changed to a valid address on
that network.

To allow the person who will complete the initial software setup to change
the system’s IP address before connecting it to the network, you should
create a small network between the S2 system and the configuration PC.

1. Put an Ethernet switch between the S2 system and the configuration

PC, as shown in Figure 54.
2. The Ethernet switch can be of any size, but you should not use a
switch that is already being used for another purpose.
3. Ensure that the person who will perform the initial software setup
knows that the IP address of the PC must be changed to a static
value of 192.168.0.x (where x is a number between 100 and 200).
4. For more information, refer to the S2 NetBox Initial Software
Setup Guide.

The two LEDs located on an access control, input, output, or temperature

blade are described in the following table.

LED Meaning

LED #1 RUN ON GREEN means the blade is powered and has been initialized.
OFF means either the blade is not powered (check the ribbon cable
connection) or the blade is not initialized (reboot the S2 node).
LED #2 I2C ON RED, BLINKS OFF indicates a state change on the input and/or
output.
This LED is normally OFF.

The procedure for removing blades will be necessary only if you need to
swap out a blade for service reasons.

CAUTION: Blades are not hot-swappable. Before connecting or

disconnecting blades in the enclosure, be sure to remove
power from the system, after stopping all processes.

1. Power down the system using one of the procedures shown in the
section: Performing an Orderly System Shutdown on page 31.
2. Be sure that you are grounded and remove all reader, output, and
input connectors attached to the blade and label each with their
connector position.
3. Unplug the ribbon cable by pushing outward on the two extraction
levers. This will gently pry out the cable connector.

4. Unthread the screw from the top of the standoff and remove the screw
and lock washer.
5. Remove the blade from the slot in the chassis.

This section describes how to use the Power, Reset, and Revert
buttons to:
 Start and shut down the system.

When the system is not running, pressing the Power button starts the
system. The system status LED blinks while the system is starting up.
You will hear a single beep when the startup process is complete.

S2 Security Corporation 69 February 2016

S2 NetBox Hardware Installation Guide Testing and Troubleshooting

When the system is running, you can use the Power button to perform an
orderly or hard shutdown:
 Orderly Shutdown: Momentarily pressing the Power button performs
the same function as an orderly shutdown performed through the
software. The system status LED starts to blink, indicating a shutdown
of services. You will hear a double beep once the shutdown process
is complete.
 To restart the S2 controller after an orderly shutdown, momentarily
press the Power button again.
 Hard Shutdown: holding down the Power button for longer than 5
seconds performs a hard shutdown of the S2 controller, killing all
processes immediately. The system status LED blinks until the S2
controller has shut down, at which point you can release the button.
You will hear no beeps.
To restart the S2 controller after a hard shutdown, press the Power
button momentarily, or power cycle S2 controller by turning off power
to the system and then turning it back on. The system status LED will
blink while the system is starting up, just as for a normal startup.

Note: If after 30 seconds following a power cycle the system status

LED does not start to blink, momentarily press the Power
button to start S2 controller.

Pressing the Reset button issues a software reset of S2 controller -- the

same as if you were logged into the application itself and issuing the
reset.
The Reset button should be used when S2 controller has become
inaccessible via a web browser or if the S2 controller IP address is not
responding to a network ping test.
During the troubleshooting process a reset should be issued first in an
attempt to recover an inaccessible controller before issuing a full power
reset.

Note: A hard power cycle (removal of power) of S2 controller should not

be performed without first performing a Hard Shutdown of the
controller using the Power button. See Using the Power Button to
Start Your System on page 69 for details.

S2 NetBox Hardware Installation Guide Testing and Troubleshooting

If you are unable to log in to your S2 system because the IP address or

login information is unknown, you will need to reset S2 controller’s IP and
login settings. Because you cannot do this through the user interface, you
will need to use the Revert button to reset the IP and login settings.

Note: The Revert procedure should only be performed by an S2 certified

service technician.

The Revert procedure does the following:

 Resets all S2 controller network settings to their factory defaults:
The IP address is reset to 192.168.0.250.
The subnet mask is reset to 255.255.255.0.
The gateway, DNS 1, and DNS 2 are each reset to 192.168.0.1.
The S2 controller web server port is reset to 80.
 Resets the password for the default administrator account to “admin.”
 Re-enables the administrator account, if necessary.
 Reassigns full system administrator rights to the default administrator
account.
 Resets the interface language to English.

Note: Once S2 controller’s network and login defaults have been reset,
you can change them at any time by selecting Configuration : Site
Settings : Network Controller. Click the Initmode Settings link to
change the network settings and the web server port number.
Click the Localization link to change the interface language.

1. Using the tip of a pencil or pen, activate the Revert button (shown in
Figure 60) and hold it closed until you hear a single beep (in
approximately 3 seconds).
2. A double beep indicates that S2 controller is restarting.
3. After 15 to 30 seconds, the system will beep three times. This
indicates that the following controller settings have been reset.
The IP address is reset to 192.168.0.250.
The subnet mask is reset to 255.255.255.0.
The gateway, DNS 1, and DNS 2 are each reset to 192.168.0.1.
The Revert procedure also:

of supported devices, and software updates.

 Operating temperature range: 32° F to 122° F (0° C to 49° C).

 Operating relative humidity range: Up to 85% non-condensing.

For information on power requirements for external devices, see the

following sections:
 Connecting Readers on page 39.
 Wiring Inputs on page 41.
 Wiring Outputs on page 47.

The total current that one S2 system can provide to all readers is 2800
milliamps. Each access control blade can supply up to a total of 400
milliamps at 12VDC to readers. For example, an access control blade can
supply 400 milliamps to one reader or 200 milliamps to each of two
readers. If the readers require more current, or a different voltage, then a
separate UL 294 or UL 603 Power Limited Supply must be used.
Many Wiegand-compatible proximity readers from HID require 200
milliamps or less. An S2 system can power fourteen such readers directly
(14x200 milliamps = 2.8A). Long range proximity readers may require
more power. Refer to the reader manufacturer documentation for power
specifications.
Other than readers, any non-S2 components in the system (such as

meters) twisted Category 5.
Maximum distance from a temperature sensor to the S2 system: 1000
feet (305 meters).
 Diodes required for output devices that are DC powered: 1N4002- 1
A, 50 V, Fast Recovery Diode or equivalent.
 Varistors (MOV) required for output devices that are AC powered: 40
VAC, 56 VDC, 10 A Surge, Radial Leaded Varistor or equivalent, such
as World Products Inc. SNR-D56K2.
 Resistors required for input devices: 1k Ohms.
 Ethernet cable: CAT 5 cable or better with RJ-45 connector.

The S2 NetBox and S2 Network Node are compatible with UL Listed 26-
bit, 126-bit, and 200-bit Wiegand readers.

The S2 Network Controller supports up to 128 cameras. The exact

number will depend on usage. IP video cameras may be connected
directly to the network and driven by S2 controller. For UL applications, IP
cameras were not investigated.
At this release, the S2 Network Controller is tested to work with the
following models:
 Axis: All VAPI-compliant cameras and models 2120, 232D
 IQinVision: Various IQeye models
 Panasonic: Models WV-NM100, WV-NS324
