Content Standard Addressed:
ELAGSE8W3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique,
relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
a. Engage and orient the reader by establishing a context and point of view and introducing a narrator
and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally and logically.

e. Provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on the narrated experiences or events.

Technology Standard Addressed:

Innovative Designer
Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new,
useful or imaginative solutions.
4a Students know and use a deliberate design process for generating ideas, testing theories, creating
innovative artifacts or solving authentic problems.
4b Students select and use digital tools to plan and manage a design process that considers design
constraints and calculated risks.
4c Students develop, test and refine prototypes as part of a cyclical design process.
4d Students exhibit a tolerance for ambiguity, perseverance and the capacity to work with open-
ended problems.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students will be able to write their own narrative about their lives which will make the material
relevant and give them personal choice. Students will remain engaged because the “why” of what they are
doing is personal to them.
Representation: Students will be able to use pictures or videos in their final products after their narrative

writing. Students will also have the choice of narrating their movies or choosing sound that relates to them.
Students will have a written portion and movie portion of this assignment.
Action and Expression: When presenting their projects, students will have the option of reading their
narrative, recording sound, or simply showing what they made with small explanations. Students can also use
their own pictures, pictures they find, videos, audio, etc. Students will have a lot of creative liberty to
complete their projects.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will be writing a narrative based on their lives for the past semester. Students will be writing about
things such as their first day of school, their friends, family, hobbies, etc. Students will have creative liberty
creating their narratives as long as they are respectful and appropriate for school. Giving students the
opportunity to create something about their lives allows them to feel more attached to their work. The
content standard will involve their narrative of real experiences while the technology standard will involve
designing their movie based off of their narrative.

To extend the narrative, students will be creating a movie using IMovie to showcase their year in videos,
images, and sound. Students will have the option to create the movie however they want as long is it includes
at least 15 pictures or 10 pictures and 3 videos and audio of some kind. Students will have 3 days to complete
their narratives and 5 days to complete their movies. Students will be able to present their movies to the class
while reading their narrative, or placing audio over the movie. Students will be able to peer evaluate 2 of their
peers and the feedback will be used to create a final product to turn in and share. When sharing their videos,
students can post on their Edmodo class pages so that all of their peers can see it and it will be assessed from
there.
Importance of technology:

Giving students the opportunity to create a video along with their narrative extends this assignment from a
LoTi level 2 to a LoTi level 4. While students could complete the narrative with no extension assignment, they
will be more engaged in the assignment knowing that they will be turning it into a creative product.

Inspiration (optional):

In today’s society, students love to video blog (vlog for short). If students have the opportunity to use their
creativity in a school assignment, they will be more dedicated to their craft. Students love to show off what
they know and giving them this opportunity will allow students to thrive on their creativity.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Students will be using their personal pictures and videos for this assignment so it is imperative that they only
share it with their class Edmodo page. Later on, students may want to send it to relatives or share it with
other friends and their parents must be aware of this. Parents will be well-versed on the internet safety
policies and will have to inforce them outside of the classroom.

Reflective Practice:

After this lesson, students will have a new skill of knowing how to make a movie. Many students will be able
to take this skill into their future classes and even into their future careers. Teaching students how to make
movies at an earlier age gives them more abilities later on.
