2.2 Node Types

There are a number of applications that are supported by M-MGw R4:
• Media Gateway Application provides bearer conversion, media stream handling
and circuit switched data functions. Communication with the MSC server is
carried out utilizing the GCP protocol.
• Signaling Gateway Application makes it possible to perform signaling bearer
conversions at the edges of core network, thus allowing use of unified signaling
bearers on the Connectivity Layer. The Signaling Gateway can therefore be
used as a tool for introducing new signaling bearer in the network.
• ATM Cross Connect and AAL2 Switch contain versatile and powerful ATM traffic
handling functionality providing significant savings in network resource
utilization.

GMP V2.0 and GMP V2.1 product packages contain the Media Gateway
configurations incorporating ATM Cross Connect, AAL2 Switch and Signaling
Gateway functionality.

GMP V2.0 & 2.1

Depending on network topology and the situation the M-MGw is handling, the node
can assume different roles in the Mobile Core Network. It is not necessary to have
several physical M-MGw nodes taking care of these different situations – one node
can have a number of roles in the network.

The software release supporting GMP V2.1 hardware is M-MGw R4 or later.

With the GMP V2.0 product package it is possible to configure new M-MGw R4
nodes as the following node types:
• ATM Cross Connect/ AAL2 Switch/ Signaling Gateway
• (Stand alone) Signaling Gateway

3 Upgrades
SW upgrades of M-MGw R3 GMP V2.0 to M-MGw R4 GMP V2.0 are possible. The
XC/SGw and SGw are using Node Based licenses whereas all the other
configurations are using the SCC Based Licenses.

3.1 SCC Based SW Licenses

The M-MGw configurations are subject to capacity based SW Licensing. The
primary parameter for dimensioning the node’s capacity is the erlang. From a
capacity Right To Use (RTU) licensing perspective this is mirrored by Simultaneous
Call Capacity (SCC). The number of licensed SCCs defines the maximum number
of simultaneous calls that can be handled by the node. This limit is enforced by a
mechanism implemented in the M-MGw SW.

Upgrading M-MGw R3 main basic SW license to M-MGw R4 main basic SW license

provides the right to use all the M-MGw R4 basic and enhanced basic features to
the same SCC value as the existing R3 license. Basic and enhanced basic features
are specified in the Ericsson Media Gateway for Mobile Networks Feature
Description (221 04-FGC 101 808).

Note: The license only stipulates the maximum authorized capacity for the node.
Sufficient hardware capacity must be ensured to make use of the licensed SW
capacity.

A number of optional SW features, listed in Table 2 below, are enhanced in the R4

release. If any of those were licensed in the M-MGw R3, they must also be
upgraded. All these features must be licensed to the same capacity level as the
M-MGw R4 main basic SW license.

SW and HW expansions of M-MGw R4 GMP V2.0 nodes are also possible. Those
are described in Chapter 4. At the time of GMP V2.0 to GMP V2.1 expansion it is
mandatory to upgrade the node’s SW from R3 to R4 if that has not been done
before.

4 New Nodes
The following node types are available in M-MGw R4 GMP V2.0 as new nodes:
• ATM Cross Connect/ AAL2 Switch/ Signaling Gateway
• (Stand alone) Signaling Gateway

Other types of new M-MGw R4 nodes are contained in GMP V3.0 product package.

Important Notes. Please read this section carefully before proceeding.

• The signaling capacity measured in MSU/s is 10000 -15000 when routing traffic
based on DPC/NI on MTP3/M3UA level. When routing traffic on Global Titles,
the capacity is 6000 MSU/s. The signaling capacity figures are approximate and
the actual capacity varies depending on interfaces used as well as message
signal unit (MSU) length.
• All capacity figures stated below are HW capacity only. In addition, the nodes
are subject to node based SW licensing.

4.1 Base Configurations

There are two base configurations available as new nodes in the GMP V2.0 Product
Package for M-MGw R4. Those are shown in Table 5.

The GMP V2.0 XC/SGw is a node configuration with no speech processing

capabilities. The GMP V2.0 XC/SGw also includes AAL2 Switch functionality. The
signaling gateway can support routing and signaling bearer conversion between
ATM, TDM and IP links.

The GMP V2.0 SGw is a stand-alone signaling gateway configuration (for ETSI and
ANSI only) optimized for routing and signaling bearer conversion between ATM,
TDM and IP. It is designed to provide optimum-signaling capacity in a node based
on Ericsson Connectivity Packet Platform. Up to two signaling gateway nodes can
be housed in the same cabinet.

All 155 Mbps ports provided by ET-MC41 are implemented with MSP 1+1
redundancy. The number of such 155 Mbps ports in this document always denote
the number of 155 Mbps pairs (implementing MSP 1+1 redundancy).

Unprotected use of TDM STM-1 is also possible if required. Please contact your
local Ericsson personnel for details.

Four of the sixteen 1.5/2 Mbps ports provided by ET-MC1 are intended for
synchronization and test equipment connections. The two ports used for
synchronization can carry user plane traffic simultaneously. The remaining twelve
E1/T1 ports can be used for user plane or signaling connections.

Inversed multiplexing for ATM (IMA) is supported by ET-MC41 and ET-MC1 boards
present in the node. The maximum size of one IMA group is 8 E1/T1 interfaces. Up
to 30 IMA groups can be defined for one STM-1/OC-3. The exact number of groups
depends on the group configuration. Contact Ericsson local representative for more
information.

The 155 Mbps TDM and ATM ports support connection of optical interfaces.
The 1.5/2 Mbps ports support connections of electrical interfaces.

If low speed (1.5/2 Mbps) interfaces are preferred to STM-1/OC-3 an SDH

multiplexer ET4-1 can be used as part of the total site solution. The ET4-1 is an
optional extension product to STM-1/OC-3. This is further described in section C.3.

The user interface to the M-MGw element manager is built on standard web-based
technology. The physical connection between the M-MGw and Operation and
Maintenance (O&M) terminals can be established using the IP over Ethernet or IP
over ATM. Typically 1+1 10/100-BaseT Ethernet connections or 1+1 STM-1
connections will be used in respective cases.

4.2 SW Licenses

5 Expansions
Note: All the expansions described in this chapter assume that the node’s SW is
at M-MGw R4 level. Upgrades were described in chapter 3.

The supported expansion paths are presented in section 5.1 and the characteristics
of the GMP V2.0 and resulting GMP V2.1 configurations are shown in section 5.2.

Important Notes. Please read this section carefully before proceeding.

• Unless otherwise stated, all connection capacity figures are estimates and were
calculated in accordance with the traffic profile shown in Appendix A. The nodes
are also subject to capacity based SW licensing.
• All the call connection capacity figures were calculated by adding together the
TDM channels of the STM-1 interfaces in the ET-MC41 and E1/T1 interfaces in
the ET-MC1 boards, and then dividing the channels between the TDM interfaces
in the most optimal way.
• The call connection capacity depends on whether or not the Echo Canceller part
of the media stream function is utilized. When activated, it is then applied to
every speech call in the PSTN interface. In Table 10 two call connection
capacity values are shown for a given traffic case. Values within parentheses
indicate capacity when echo canceling is not performed in this M-MGw but in
other locations in the core network.
• The call connection capacity figures will vary when optional features such Voice
Quality Enhancement or Compressed Speech on Nb-interface. The capacity
figures shown in Table 10 are those provided by the Media Stream Function
(MSF) without having any of these features activated. More information is
available is section 5.2.1.
• The call connection capacity figures assume IP or ATM based core network.
• The signaling capacity figures are the same for all base configurations. Each
base configuration supports 100 ATM based signaling links and 256 TDM
(64/56 kbps) based signaling links. The signaling capacity measured in MSU/s is
10 000-15 000 when routing traffic based on DPC/NI on MTP3/M3UA level.
When dual SS7 stack support is required, the M-MGw node needs to be
assigned at least two Signaling Point Codes, in order to utilize the full capacity.
When routing traffic on Global Titles, the capacity is 6 000 MSU/s. The signaling
capacity figures are approximate and the actual capacity varies depending on
interfaces used as well as message signal unit (MSU) length.
• Availability of specific configurations as well as applicable traffic mixes needs to
be checked separately, since not all of them will be made available at the same
time. Please contact Ericsson local representatives for further information.

Note: Due to the nature of the expansion, 16 is the maximum number of 155 Mbps
ATM ports in a GMP V2.1 configuration. In cases where 30 ATM ports
option was utilized in GMP V2.0, that number will need to be reduced.

The number of 155 Mbps ATM ports present in configuration 216 depends on the
starting point of the expansion:

GMP V2.1 Number of

216 16 Occurs when 216 results from expansion of GMP V2.0 201

Table 11 ATM ports in 216

The 155 Mbps ports provided by ET-MC41 are implemented with MSP 1+1
redundancy. Unprotected use of TDM STM-1 is also possible if required. Please
contact Ericsson local representative for details.

Two of the sixteen 1.5/2 Mbps ports provided by ET-MC1 are intended for test
equipment connections. The remaining fourteen E1/T1 ports can be used for user
plane or signaling connections.

GMP V2.0 and GMP V2.1 base configurations support both SS7 over ATM and SS7
over IP connections.

If low speed (1.5/2 Mbps) interfaces are preferred to STM-1/OC-3 an SDH

multiplexer ET4-1 can be used as part of the total site solution. The ET4-1 is an
optional extension product to STM-1/OC-3. This is further described in section C.3.

The physical connection between the M-MGw and Operation and Maintenance
(O&M) terminals can be established using the IP over Ethernet or IP over ATM.
Typically 1+1 10/100-BaseT Ethernet connections or 1+1 STM-1 connections will be
used in respective cases.

5.2.1 Speech Compression Effects on MSF Capacity

Capacity figures stated in Table 10 can vary if the optional feature Compressed
Speech on Nb-interface is activated.

GMP V2.0 & 2.1

Compressed Speech on Nb-interface allows to carry speech over the core network
in a compressed format. In GSM case, this saving in transmission bandwidth entails
an increased utilization of M-MGw speech codecs, which is in turn estimated to
decrease the node’s MSF capacity by up to 9%. In WCDMA case this features
allows better availability of the speech coder resources thus increasing the node
capacity by up to 12%. These percentage figures are dependant on the traffic mix
and can be optimized by changing the media stream board (MSB) profile.

The above figure estimations assume that echo canceling is performed in the node,
and that the optional feature Voice Quality Enhancement is not activated.

5.3 Basic SW License

5.3.1 Main Basic SW License

In case of conversion from XC/SGw to M-MGw, the M-MGw Main Basic SW License
for a minimum of 500 SCCs is mandatory with each M-MGw node.

In case of expansion, the capacity of the M-MGw R4 main basic SW license can be
expanded in steps of 100 SCCs.

The M-MGw R4 Main Basic SW License is presented in the table below.

Optional SW features can also be added or expanded in steps of 100 SCCs.

Applicable commercial product numbers are shown in Table 16. All optional features
must be licensed to the same capacity level as the M-MGw main basic SW license.

The maximum number of SCCs that can be licensed per configuration and traffic
mix corresponds to the maximum capacity stated in Table 10. Sufficient hardware
capacity must also be ensured to make use of the licensed SW capacity.

5.3.2 SGw Basic SW License for XC/SGw

5.4 Options
The following options can be added to a Product Package configuration.

5.4.1 Extra ATM Capacity

Note: As stated above, 16 is the maximum number of 155 Mbps ATM ports in
certain GMP V2.1 configurations. Careful consideration must be made when
utilizing the 30 ATM Ports Option in GMP V2.0 nodes planned for expansion
to GMP V2.1. Thus such an expansion may not be possible without
disturbance of the node’s service. The impact can be minimized when
allocating ATM ports for connections to other nodes in the network. Local
Ericsson representatives will be able to assist with further information.

5.4.2 SW Feature Licenses

Any of the optional features, listed in Table 16 can be added to a M-MGw

configuration if they are not already licensed to the node. If already present, their
licensed capacity can be expanded. They are licensed per SCC in steps of 100 and
must be licensed to the same capacity level as the M-MGw R4 main basic SW
license.

Note: Optional SW Feature License expansion of XC/SGw and SGw are shown in
section 4.3.2

5.4.3 Channel Associated Signaling for ANSI

Note: This option applies to ANSI markets only.

It is possible to add Channel Associated Signaling (CAS) interface to the M MGw.

This is implemented by employing the Ericsson ISUP to CAS Converter (ICC). ICC
receives ANSI ISUP message signals on T1 interfaces from M-MGw (the SGw
module) and maps them onto T1 CAS links towards a CAS based network (and vice
versa). Payload related to the ISUP signaling is also carried on T1s between the
ICC and M-MGw.

The ICC consists of a number of External Client Processors (ECP). One ECP can
handle ISUP to CAS conversion of 8 non-redundant T1 links. One ICC node can be
configured with maximum six ECPs, and thus a maximum of 48 non-redundant T1
links can be converted in an ICC node. M-MGw can be connected directly to ECP
(T1 link) or through ET4-1 (OC-3 link).

Due to the need of connectors on the power cables for when the Enclosed Power
Distribution Unit (EPDU) is used, the power cables shall be ordered in the EPDU
PP.

C.3 Conversion of STM-1/OC-3

All the Base Configurations are offered with protected (MSP 1+1) optical 155 Mb/s
interfaces. The STM-1/OC-3 solution is superior to PDH and thus should whenever
possible be used.

If 2 Mbps (E1) or 1.5 Mbps (T1) interfaces are required then the following
conversion package can be ordered:

Commercial Product No. of STM-1/OC-3

Option Pack
Number to be converted
STM1/OC3 optical to 63 E1/84 T1 conversion INF 903 0039/1 0 – 30

Table 25 Conversion of STM-1/OC-3

Note: It is possible to convert some or all of the protected 155 Mbps interfaces of
the M-MGw. The commercial product number above corresponds to one
155 Mbps interface to be converted. Example – Converting three 155 Mbps
interfaces will correspond to three INF 903 0039/1 .

The ET4-1 cabinet can be placed near the node, or anywhere else in the switch hall.
However, to simplify on-site cable management, it is recommended that the
additional cabinet(s) supporting the conversion of the 155 Mbps interfaces are
placed near or next to the transmission equipment.

Note: Every ET4-1 magazine houses two ET4-1 systems. Different nodes can use
one ET4-1 system each.

If ET4-1 is used to adapt the node to a PDH network environment, reference timing
for Network Synchronization (NS) over PDH can be distributed via ET4-1 in the
outgoing and in the incoming direction in relation to the node.

The fans in the ET4-1 are monitored by the Media Gateway Alarm Control Unit
(MACU) reporting the alarms to OSS-RC via the fault management functionality in
the M-MGw.

It is mandatory to choose the length of the optical cable between the node and the
ET4-1. One cable per protected ET4-1 system is applicable.

The Digital Distribution Frame (DDF) is the interface to be used when twisted pair or
coaxial cables have to be terminated, organized or cross-connected in long-distance
transport networks or in access networks. The DDF product package is housed in
BYB 501 cabinets and includes cables to connect E1 and T1 to external equipment.

The Optical Distribution Frame (ODF) is the interface between the transmission
equipment and the optical network. The main function is to organize and terminate
fiber at this point. The ODF product package is housed in BYB 501 cabinets or in a
wall-mounted cabinet and includes cables for optical connection to external
equipment.

Flexfield is a modular system built on separate modules housed in sub racks. The
sub racks can be mounted in 19” racks, as well as on walls. All termination points
are accessible from the front. Due to its modularity, it is possible to have a mix of
coaxial and twisted pair cable interfaces, as well as optical interfaces, in the same
sub rack. The primary usage and the most cost effective usage of Flexfield is in
cases where it is required to terminate low and medium number of optical or
electrical, or mixed optical and electrical cables.

The Main Distribution Frame (MDF) connects the exchange with the copper pair
cables of the outdoor network. The MDF in the DF product package is housed in
BAB 326 for max 1590 lines per cabinet or BYB 501 for max 1050 lines per cabinet.
The BYB 501 is an earthquake proof design.

For more information see Product Package Description for

Distribution Frames (221 03-2/FAB 102 615).

D.5 Raised Floor

Usage of raised floor is generally recommended by Ericsson and must be used
when under floor cabling is chosen. The product package for raised floor is available
in standard heights and the floor plates are pre-holed for BYB 501 cabinets.

For more information see Product Package Description for

Raised Floor and Mechanics (221 03-2/FAB 102 667).

D.6 External Mechanics

External mechanics are used for cabling between the node and other site elements.
The mechanics are available for under floor and overhead cabling.

For more information see Product Package Description for

Raised Floor and Mechanics (221 03-2/FAB 102 667).
