SEMI-FINAL EXAMINATION IN PETE 407 – HYDROCARBON PHASE
BEHAVIOR

Name:_______________________________________ Score:______________
Section:_____________ Student No. :____________ Date:______________

General Directions:

1. Solve the following problems completely and neatly.

2. This is a take home exam to be submitted on July 18, Monday, 9 o’clock in the
morning.
3. Write your solution on 8.5’ x 11’ bond paper. Use black ballpen only.

PROBLEMS:

1. If a petroleum fraction has a measured molecular weight of 190 and specific

gravity of 0.8762, characterize this fraction by calculating the boiling point,
critical temperature, critical temperature, critical pressure, and critical volume
of the fraction. Use Riazi and Daubert Correlation.

2. Calculate the acentric factor and critical compressibility factor of the

component in the above problem.

3. A petroleum fraction has the following physical properties:

API = 50⁰ Tb = 400⁰F MW = 165

Calculate the Pc, Tc, Vc, ω and Zc by using the following correlations:
a. Cavett
b. Kesler and Lee
c. Win-Sim-Daubert
d. Watansiri-Owens-Starling

4. A heptane-plus fraction is characterized by a molecular weight of 200 and

specific gravity of 0.810. Calculate Pc, Tc, Tb and acentric factor of the plus
fraction by using:

behavior.

6. Using the gas composition as given in Problem no. 5, and assuming ideal gas
behavior, calculate
a. Gas density at 2,000 psia and 150⁰F
b. Specific volume at 2,000 psia and 150⁰F
c. Gas formation volume factor in scf/ft3

7. A gas well is producing at a rate of 1.22 MMSCF. The specific gravity of the
producing gas is 0.74. If the average reservoir pressure and reservoir
