Upgrading the Control Box Operating 1
System
In this chapter: This chapter explains how to upgrade the
n Introduction control box operating system.
1.1 Introduction
The required CB450 and CB460 control box operating system version for the version 13.10 software
is 7.6.0.
CAUTION — Once an upgrade has started, you must not connect or disconnect devices on the harness. System
power must not be lost during the upgrade process.
To upgrade the control box operating system, follow the instructions in these sections, in the
following order:
ATTENTION — Only use a USB flash drive with a metal surround on the connector (1), similar to the USB
flash drive supplied with the product.
When using a USB flash drive with plastic surrounding the connector (2), the control box may fail to
recognize the drive.
When using a USB flash drive with no metal surround on the connector (3), the drive can be inserted upside
down, contact can be broken and the file transfer process can be interrupted.
ATTENTION — The system only supports USB flash drives formatted as FAT32.
ATTENTION – The Application Manager dialog gives you the option to press OK to restart or = to continue, however
you can only press OK.
7. After you press OK to continue, the upgrade process runs automatically and a progress dialog is
displayed.
2
Upgrading the Control Box Firmware 2
2.1 Introduction
If your control box runs a previous version of the GCS900 Grade Control System, you must upgrade
the control box firmware to version 13.10.
CAUTION — Once an upgrade has started, you must not connect or disconnect devices on the harness. System
power must not be lost during the upgrade process.
To upgrade the control box firmware, follow the instructions in these sections, in the following
order:
ATTENTION — Only use a USB flash drive with a metal surround on the connector (1), similar to the USB
flash drive supplied with the product.
When using a USB flash drive with plastic surrounding the connector (2), the control box may fail to
recognize the drive.
When using a USB flash drive with no metal surround on the connector (3), the drive can be inserted upside
down, contact can be broken and the file transfer process can be interrupted.
ATTENTION — The system only supports USB flash drives formatted as FAT32.
If the date is BEFORE 12th of October 2016, software support has expired and you must
install a current option key before any new control box firmware is usable.
6. To install a current Software Support option key, insert a USB flash drive, with the option key
text file stored in the root directory, into the control box USB slot. The option key text file is read
and the option keys updated.
7. Press \ to return to the Option Key dialog.
3
Upgrading Device Firmware 3
3.1 Introduction
When you turn on the system after upgrading the control box firmware, the system may display an
“old firmware” warning, or, in the case of GNSS receiver firmware, the No GNSS Data flashing
message. If either of these messages are displayed, you must upgrade the firmware of one or more
devices.
To upgrade device firmware, follow the instructions in these sections, in the following order:
Note – If you use an SPS730 or SPS930 instrument for UTS positioning, the minimum firmware
version that the instrument must run is v6.1.92.
1. Press \ to go from a firmware warning message to the Diagnostics screen. Otherwise, press
M and select Diagnostics. The Diagnostics dialog appears.
2. Use the Diagnostics dialog to identify the devices that require a firmware upgrade. If, for
example, the GNSS status is:
“Connected” and the firmware version displays, no further action is required.
Note – Even if no further action is required, it is always good practice to upgrade to the
most recent firmware available.
“App. 4.89 required” (or similar), upgrade to the required version.
3. Make a list of the devices that require a firmware upgrade. This list is used later in this procedure.
7. The message shows if the option key was successfully applied or if it failed. Press \ to
continue.
You do not need to complete this procedure again unless the option key expires or you want to
change the available functions for a GNSS receiver. It is recommended that you delete the option
key file from your USB flash drive.
8. Press = to return to the Option Keys dialog.
MS992 – Left, and press \. The Option Keys - <receiver> dialog appears.
4. Press \. The option key updates and a message shows if the option key was correctly applied.
Press \.
Note – If there is a GNSS receiver communication failure, the No response from receiver dialog
appears. Check the connections of the GNSS receiver and try again.
5. Press = to return to the Option Keys dialog.

xFill technology is an RTK extension service (single base or VRS). When the primary RTK correction
stream is lost — during radio or internet connection outages — it can "fill in" for RTK corrections
temporarily.
Note – Before the xFill technology can be used the GNSS receiver(s) requires approximately 20
minutes of line-of-sight to the MSS-band satellite and in the Diagnostics - GNSS dialog, the GNSS
mode must be 'RTK (fixed)'.

9.2 Improvements
9.2.1 Control box
l The control box operating system v7.6.0 supports minor changes to control box hardware and
prevents downgrading to earlier versions that do not support the new hardware. The changes are
due to routine maintenance only and do not affect any control box specifications.
l This version of the firmware has fixed the v13.00 issue of the control box locking-up due to CAN
driver traffic.
