COLLEGE OF NURSING AND ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES


ADMISSION AND RETENTION POLICIES

In their recent visit, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Technical Committee on
Nursing Education (TCNE) reiterated the full compliance of the provisions in CMO No. 15 series
of 2017, or the Policies, Standards, and Guidelines for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, which
includes the strengthening of the College of Nursing’s admission and retention policies apart from
those set by the University. This is also in accordance with Section 4 of RA 10931 or the Universal
Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act which states that all Filipino students shall avail of free
higher education in SUCs “provided that they pass the entrance examination and other admission
and retention requirements of the SUCs.”

PRESENT Admission Policies


Based on Chapter 2 Article 1 Sections 258 & 259, Article 2 Sections 260 – 263, and Article 3
Section 264 of the JRMSU Code (2010):

1. All freshmen must have passed the University Entrance Test.


2. Students with high school average below 85% and have not passed the University Entrance
Test will automatically qualify for admission in non-degree programs or courses.
3. Transferees must complete not less than 50% of the total units required in the University to
finish his course.
4. Transferee’s subjects will be credited if:
a. Course description is similar to that offered in JRMSU;
b. Grade obtained is not than less than 2.5.
5. Continuing students will be readmitted if:
a. Cleared from last semester he/she attended;
b. Grades from last semester he/she attended are presented;
c. He/she does not have failing grades in no more than 50% of the total units he/she has
taken;
d. He/she passed the University Entrance Test.

PRESENT Retention Policies


Based on Chapter 2 Article 4 Section 265, Chapter 4 Article 4 Section 310, 313, and Article 5
Sections 314 – 320 of the JRMSU Code:

1. A student with failure, dropped, incomplete grade, and grades below 2.5 in major and
professional subjects are subject to the retention policies of the College where he/she is
enrolled.
2. Passing grades:
a. Major subjects – at least 80% (2.5);
b. Minor subjects – at least 75% (3.0).
3. If failed:
a. Major subjects – re-enrolled only ONCE until passing grade is achieved;
b. Minor subjects – re-enrolled until passing grade is achieved;
c. In 50% of the total units of the enrolled program – permanently barred from pursuing
any degree of the University.
4. INC grades should be complied with within one (1) semester only and will automatically
become a grade of 5.0 if not complied within the said time frame.
PROPOSED Admission Policies (Effective AY 2019-2020)

Entrants for BSN Program must:

1. Freshmen:
a. Have a high school average of at least 85% (Clarifies No. 2 of “Present Admission Policies);

2. Shifters/Transferees:
a. Have a grade of at least 80% in ALL subjects taken from the previous school attended or program enrolled
in (Clarifies No. 4b of “Present Admission Policies”);
b. Have taken subjects from previous schools or programs with the same course descriptions as those
offered in the University/program to have those subjects to be credited (RETAINED);
c. Have taken less than 50% of the total number of units required for the program in the previous school
(RETAINED);

3. Continuing Students:
a. Not have been advised to shift to other programs after previously failing to meet the requirements of the
BSN program (NEW);
b. Have been cleared from the last semester attended (RETAINED);
c. Not have failed grades in at least two (2) major and/or professional nursing courses in the previous
semesters (Revises No. 5c of “Present Admission Policies”);

4. General Admission Policies (for Freshmen, Shifters/Transferees, Continuing Students):


a. Get a score of at least 80 in the University Admission Test (Clarifies No. 1 of “Present Admission Policies”
and emphasizes the College’s intent to only accept applicants with a score of at least 80);
b. Present a medical certificate bearing “FIT FOR DUTY” as proven during physical examination in any
DOH-accredited Medical Clinic or DOH-retained/accredited health care facility with the following lab test
results attached (NEW):
1) Complete blood count (CBC)
2) Urinalysis with drug test
3) Hepatitis B screening
4) Stool exam
5) Chest X-ray
6) Personality Test (Guidance Office)
c. Have no debilitating physical deformities that hinder the carrying out of the diverse roles and
responsibilities of a student nurse (NEW);
d. Have no untreated active skin lesions, large, visible tattoos, unsightly facial birthmarks, and uncorrected
dental deformities that could possibly endanger the client’s safety and comfort (NEW);
e. Submit a letter of intent addressed to the dean explaining his/her desire to enroll in the BSN program
(NEW);
f. Pass the interview with the College Dean (NEW);
g. Must get a total score of at least 10 out of 12 in the College Admission Score Card, as shown below
(NEW):

PROPOSED Retention Policies (Effective AY 2019-2020)

To be retained in the BSN program, the student must:

1. Obtain a grade of at least 80% (2.5) in ALL major and professional nursing courses (RETAINED); grades
below 80% (2.5) can only be retaken ONCE until the passing grade is achieved (RETAINED) otherwise
he/she will be advised to shift to other programs;
2. Have not received a grade below 80% (2.5) in at least two (2) major and professional nursing courses in a
semester otherwise he/she will be advised to shift to other programs (NEW);
3. Obtain a grade of at least 75% (3.0) in all minor subjects otherwise they must retake the failed subjects only
ONCE until the passing grade is achieved (NEW: clarifies No. 2b of “Present Retention Policies”);
4. Have not dropped or incurred a “DROPPED” rating in any subject taken in a semester otherwise they will be
advised to shift to other programs (NEW);
5. Have not incurred any major, life-threatening offenses while going on hospital or community duty for their
RLE upon recommendation of the College Deliberation Committee after going through due process (NEW:
reinforces Item 5.1 & 5.2 of the 2018 Revised RLE Policies);
6. INC grades should be complied with within one (1) semester only otherwise it will automatically become a
grade of 5.0 (RETAINED).
