Abstract

The research is all about the "EFFECT OF ABSENTEEISM TO THE

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF CAMP

TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL. The researchers collected data from

the Senior High School Students of Camp Tinio National High

School who has Absenteeism problem. Answers were collected on 5-

Likert scale which was based on options; 5 for strongly agree

and 1 for strongly disagree. Students that has Absenteeism

Problem with general average from 75 and above was our

respondents. They filled the questionnaire after consents. The

results of findings show that after the t-test formula was run,

the researchers got the final value of -53.1653, which indicates

the null hypothesis is rejected. Therefore, there was a

significant effect of absenteeism to the Average of student.

After the t test formula was run, the researchers got the final

value of -839.503, which indicates the null hypothesis is

rejected. Therefore, there was a significant effect of

absenteeism to the class participation of student.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Introduction

Education is a very vital tool that is used in the

contemporary world to succeed. It is important because it is

used to mitigate most of the challenges faced in life.

The knowledge that is attained through education helps open

doors to a lot of opportunities for better prospects in career

growth. In order to attain the right grade in your education,

there are certain things you must do through the learning

process.

Absenteeism a tendency to be away from school or work

without a good reason: The perform or habit of being absent from

school or work. (Merriam Dictionary) The students who do not come

in schools, colleges and universities regularly and not attend

the classes are called absent. Some students come in

universities but not attend the classes also called absent. This

habitual act of students is called absenteeism. “Performance

means the act of the point or the state of being performed.”

(The American Heritage® Dictionary). According to my point of

view performance is an action by which an individual fulfill the

CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
7

task which assign ourselves or assigned by others is called

performance. Although there are many factors which effect on

students’ performance either related to personal life or

educational setting but the effects of absenteeism on students’

performance is more prone to discuss. Indicator is defined as “A

thing that indicates the position or level of something.’

(Oxford dictionary). Indicators of poor performance, low GPA,

poor class participation, poor coordination among students.

Regular attendance fulfills several important goals of higher

education. It encourages the students to organize their thinking

by comparing new ideas. It plays an important role in enhancing

student performance because it helps the student to submit

assignment on time, enhance collaboration among student,

increase the test score of the student, improve the student GPA,

increase the student confidence , increase their understanding

of basic concepts, easily understand every point, student

achieve greater understanding and improve coordination with

teachers and peers. These problems can be overcome by improving

the attendance and reducing the absenteeism.

Class participation includes including being sufficiently

prepared, discussion with class mate and teachers. Student’s

class participation becomes affected due to absenteeism. The

CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
8

effects of absenteeism in class participation, miss the chance

to become a part in class participate, raise questions about any

confusion regarding topics, clear the concepts, poor

participation in tutorial discussion; miss the chance of small

group discussion within the class. They neglect much value able

information which students can gain in class. It leads to poor

coordination with teachers, poor coordination with their class

mates in their group studies. Also affect the performance of

students especially when they are in a teamwork or group

assignments and projects. Unable to update for their

assignments, unable to take the guideline about preparing the

assignments, Absenteeism leads the students to drop out graded

activities. Poor performances in class quiz which lead to poor

GPA. Unable to prepare and the assignments on due dates which

badly effect the GPA of students. Poor performance during exams

leads to poor GPA that’s why they have to repeat the A session

or drop out from the university. This means that students that

miss their class will not have the opportunity to foster their

learning and often compensated with poor grades. Kamla Raj quoted in

his article, Bowen (2005) have established that students who attend

classes more regularly seem to be more successful in their studies

than those who regularly absent. In addition, students that attend

class regularly are more likely to remember well the information and
CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
9

apply the knowledge effectively throughout their life (Crede,

Roch&Kieszczynka, 2010).

Review of Related Literature

According to CAESC (2007) and Zeiger (2010), the most essential

learning time of the day for the students lies in the morning,

specifically between 8:00 to 9:30 AM. It is because the students

are most mindful and observant at this time of the day. It is

also the reason why the most important lessons and subject

matters are discussed during this time. So when students are

late or are not present during this time of the day, they, in

effect, miss out most of the important lessons to be noted and

learned.

A study of Stanca (2006) entitled “The Effects of

Attendance on Academic Performance” showed new evidence on the

effects of attendance on academic performance. It indicated that

attendance has a smaller but significant impact on performance.

Lecture and classes have a similar effect on performance

individually, although their impact cannot be identified

separately. Overall, the results indicate that, after

CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
10

controlling for unobservable student characteristics, attendance

has a statistically significant and quantitatively relevant

effect on student learning.

An article of Robb (2008) stated that Students who

are chronically absent, missing more than 18 days of school, are

more likely to fail classes, have lower GPAs, and a higher risk

for dropping out. Students with no other warning indicators,

such as failing classes, chronic absences, or suspension, had a

graduation rate twice that of their chronically absent peers.

The study “Class absenteeism: reasons for non‐attendance

and the effect on academic performance” found a significant

positive correlation between class attendance and academic

performance. Further analysis reveals some difference between

language groups suggesting that culture and ethnicity may have

an effect on the relationship between class attendance and

academic performance. (Schmulian & Coetzee, 2011)

In addition, the study “Attendance and Chronic Absenteeism

in Indiana: The Impact on Student Achievement” by Spradlin

(2012) indicated a direct link between absenteeism and school

achievement, with chronically absent students scoring lower on

CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
11

achievement tests and dropping out of high school at higher

rates than peers with better attendance.

In a study entitled “The Effect of Student’s Attendance on

Academic Performance” that investigated the relationship between

student attendance and academic performance and to examine

factors that affect student attendance at SIMAD University

showed a strong positive relationship between student’s

attendance and academic performance in SIMAD university

Mogadishu. (Aden et. al., 2013)

Another study entitled “Chronic Absenteeism and Its Effects

on Students’ Academic and Socioemotional Outcomes” showed that

chronic absenteeism reduces math and reading achievement

outcomes, reduces educational engagement, and decreases social

engagement. Hence, this study offers new evidence on how an

under measured aspect of missing school impedes students’

attainment. (Gottfried, 2014)

Furthermore, the study “Effects of Absenteeism on Students

Performance” indicated that absenteeism effect on student

performance. Student who became absent have poor class

participation, poor coordination with teachers and peers and

poor GPA. Student’s class participation becomes affected due to

CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
12

absenteeism. The effects of absenteeism in class participation,

miss the chance to become a part in class participation, can’t

raise questions about any confusion regarding topics. (Khalid &

Mehmood, 2014)

In a recent study of Williams (2016) entitled "Excessive

Absences Intervention" that showed excessive absenteeism by

students may additionally result in poor academic achievement

because students are not receiving instruction on a

consecutive basis. This problem also causes low standardized

test scores because absent students are not present to learn

key concepts and skills that are assessed on standardized

exams.

A more recent article of Wierman (2017) revealed

chronically absent students are at a greater academic risk for

missing early learning milestones, failing courses, and not

graduating on time. Chronically absent students are also at a

greater risk for a number of negative long-term consequences

such as being more likely to experience poverty, diminished

mental and physical health, and involvement in the criminal

justice system as an adult.

CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Theoretical Framework

This study inspired by the study entitled “Investigating

the Phenomenon of Class Tardiness among the First Year First

Semester Chemical Engineering Students at UniversitiTeknologi

PETRONAS (UTP)” According to this study, class tardiness is

defined as students not attending lecture on time and not being

present in the time set. After attending lectures for a period

of time, students start getting to know how the lectures are

conducted and therefore assume that there will be no

constructive activities happen for the first few minutes of the

lectures. Class tardiness influences the students themselves as

well as others. As is generally known, students who possess

regular attendances tend to achieve better results as success is

related to one’s punctuality. Students who are late to class

will also cause class disruption to other students. Indeed, many

previous researchers indicated that class tardiness among the

students is a common phenomenon. Some of the researches

mentioned that students who are tardy tend to achieve lower

grades compared to others and sleeping late is the main reason.

This study aimed to identify the Phenomenon of Class Tardiness

and researchers found out that sleeping late is the main reason

of Class Tardiness. So, the researchers used this study as a

CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
14

basis of this study to Investigate the Phenomenon of Class

Tardiness among the Senior High School students of Camp tinio

National High school.

Objective of The Study

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of

absenteeism to the academic performance of senior high school

students of Camp Tinio National High School, provide conclusions

at recommendations to reduce class tardiness as well as give

information about it.

Statement of the Problem

This study entitled “Effect of Absenteeism to the Academic

Performance of Senior High School Students of Camp Tinio National High

School” seeks to find out if frequent absence has a direct effect

on student’s academic performance. This study also aims in

finding out student’s personal variable in terms of their

general average.

Hypothesis

– Hi: there is a significant effect of absenteeism to the

academic performance of students

CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
15

– Ho: there is no significant difference of Absenteeism to

the academic performance of students.

Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on identifying the Absenteeism of Senior

High School Students of Camp Tinio National High school.

The study conducted within the SHS students of CTNHS. This

group of student belongs to k-12 Curriculum Program of CTNHS and

considered as frequent absent students with the total of 48

individuals. Procedures were done at CTNHS. This study was

conducted by a student of CTNHS S.Y. 2017-2018.

This study will be limited to the effect of absenteeism to

the academic performance of senior high students of CTNHS and

will not focus on the relation of absenteeism with age and

gender.

Another limitation to this study would be although there be

much researcher on the topic due to limited time, the study may

miss some of the important research due to limited access or

availability.
CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
16

Significance of the Study

This study would be a great help in Identifying the Impact

of Absenteeism of Senior High School students of Camp Tinio

National High school. Also, this would be significant to the

following areas:

Academe- this will serve as a reference material that can lead

to further studies.

Researchers- this will serve as a reference for future

researchers who wish to conduct studies similar to this one.

Students- this will provide knowledge to students about the

Impact of Absenteeism to the Academic Performance of SHS

Students

Teachers- this study will help to encourage and guide students

in conducting studies related to the current study.

Definition of Terms

Absenteeism- the practice of regularly staying away from work or

school without good reason.

Collaboration- the action of working with someone to produce or

create something.

Disruption- disturbance or problems that interrupt an event,

activity, or process.
CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
17

Encourages- give support, confidence, or hope to (someone).

Foster- encourage or promote the development of (something,

typically something regarded as good).

Indicator- a device providing specific information on the state

or condition of something, in particular.

Mitigate- make less severe, serious, or painful.

Punctuality- the fact or quality of being on time.

METHODOLOGY

Research design

This part presents the methods of research that were

used by the researchers, the respondents of the study and, the

data gathering technique and procedures.

Correlational research design of quantitative research was

employed in this study since it is the most appropriate design

to determine the effects of absenteeism on the academic

performance of the students of Camp Tinio National High School.

According to Dr. Waters (2017) a correlational study is a

quantitative method of research in which you have 2 or more

quantitative variables from the same group of participants, &

you are trying to determine if there is a relationship (or co-

variation) between the 2 variables (that is, a similarity in

pattern of scores between the two variables, not a difference

between their means).

A correlational study determines whether or not two

variables are correlated.

CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Participants of the Study

The researchers included senior high students of Camp Tinio

National High School that are frequent. There are 30 students

that are part of the said activities. Table 1 shows the

breakdown of the respondents in each section and Table 2 shows

Instruments

The researchers used questionnaires in gathering additional

data and information. A questionnaire is a research instrument

consisting of series of questions and other prompts of the

purpose of gathering information from the respondents. The

questionnaire was invented by the Statistical Society of London

in 1838.

The researchers made the questionnaires like interviewing

the respondents personally. The questionnaire has 2 parts, each

part having 1-5 statements that is needed to be answered by the

respondents based on their personal experiences. Items in the

questionnaire are pre-arranged in random order, this parts deals

with class observation and student’s GPA

After collecting the data the researchers used ANOVA single

factor to interpret the data collected.

Procedure

Researchers accessed the internet and downloaded some

related studies to gather necessary data and information needed

in the study the researchers have conducted. From the related

studies, the researchers read all the objectives and findings on

CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
21

each study on the effects of absenteeism to the students. The

studies also set as a guide to researchers in doing the study.

An in-depth structured survey is also used to gain detailed

perspective and experience, initially the researchers search for

respondents who are compatible for the purpose of the study,

searching for frequent absent students of senior high in Camp

Tinio National High School, the collection of data was conducted

for two days.

Research Locale

The place where the researchers gathered data for this

study is at Camp Tinio National High School, CTNHS is a DepEd

managed partially urban secondary public school located in

Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija.

The students that are frequently absent are the respondent

are selected respondents for this research.

to determine if the Absenteeism affects the Class Tardiness

affects the Academic Performance of students, T-test was run.

According to Frost (2016) t-tests are a type of hypothesis test

that allows you to compare means. They are called t-tests

because each t-test boils your sample data down to one number,

the t-value. The t-test assesses whether the means of two groups
CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
23

are statistically different from each other. This analysis is

appropriate whenever you want to compare the means of two

groups, and especially appropriate as the analysis for the

posttest-only two-group randomized experimental design.

Image 1 shows the formula for finding the t value, where sample

mean minus the population mean, then divide to the answer from

CHAPTER IV

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of

absenteeism to the academic performance of senior high school

students of Camp Tinio National High School, provide conclusions

at recommendations to reduce class tardiness as well as give

information about it. This study seeks to find out if frequent

absence has a direct effect on student’s academic performance.

This study also aims in finding out student’s personal

variable in terms of their general average.

The study had sought to find the significant effect of

class absenteeism on the performance of the Senior High School

students. The findings of the study showed that absenteeism has

an effect of the academic performance of senior high school

students. After the t test formula was run, the researchers got

the final value of -839.503, which indicates the null hypothesis

is rejected. Therefore, there was a significant effect of

absenteeism to the class participation of student. After the t

test formula was run, the researchers got the final value of -

53.1653, which indicates the null hypothesis is rejected.

CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
31

Therefore, there was a significant effect of absenteeism to the

Average of student.

Base on the result on Table 5, the calculated P-value is

5.7206 and the calculated F-crit value is 4.051749. P-value is

greater than F-crit value (P-value>F-crit). Therefore, the

null hypothesis rejected. There is a significant difference

between the averages of always present and frequent absent

student.

Conclusion

A review of related literature was conducted to get a clearer

understanding of the effect of absenteeism to the academic

performance of the students. When students are late or are not

present during this time of the day, they, in effect, miss out

most of the important lessons to be noted and learned. A study

of Stanca (2006) entitled “The Effects of Attendance on Academic

Performance” showed new evidence on the effects of attendance on

academic performance. It indicated that attendance has a smaller

but significant effect on performance. Lecture and classes have

a similar effect on performance individually, although their

impact cannot be identified separately. Overall, the results

indicate that, after controlling for unobservable student

characteristics, attendance has a statistically significant and

CAMP TINIO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
32

quantitatively relevant effect on student learning. Students, who

are chronically absent, missing more than 18 days of school, are

more likely to fail classes, have lower GPAs, and a higher risk

for dropping out. Students with no other warning indicators,

such as failing classes, chronic absences, or suspension, had a

graduation rate twice that of their chronically absent peers.

Recommendation

Through the Summary and conclusions of this study, the

following recommendations were formulated:

1. The Schools need to apply strict measures for attendance

control.

2. Teachers and Head of the Department should cooperate with

each other in order to cope with absenteeism.

3. School and College should change the methods to improve

the quality of course an strength of interpersonal

relation between students and teachers.

4. Attendance team should identify barriers to attendance

and address them through intervention such as partnering

(collaborating) with community organization to address

needs of families and students.

5. Administrator should work with teachers to identify

students with pattern of absence

Principal III

Dear Madam:

We, the students from 12- Estrada are conducting a study entitled “Effect of Absenteeism to the Academic
